Smae Category Descriptions but in Different Cities
-
Hi,
I was curious, if I have a guide with 20 categories, and that guide is in 10 different cities, can I have a category description for each city that simply swaps out the city name?
Seattle Big Widgets
We offer the largest selection of widgets in the Seattle area. We have small widgets, medium widgets, large widgets. We have so many widgets, most people in Seattle are blown away by our selection.Portland Big Widgets We offer the largest selection of widgets in the Portland area. We have small widgets, medium widgets, large widgets. We have so many widgets, most people in Portland are blown away by our selection.
Would this be considered duplicate content, if it's followed by distinct city listings?
Writing 20 decriptions would be nicer than writing 200. Just trying to think about SEO, resources, best use of time, etc.
Thanks

Thank you so much for your feedback.

Thanks so much for your feedback.
What I was not sure about was that if we are providing listings and the ability to filter based on certain criteria, will users really read the content, and will they find it valuable.
It's like if you are searching for hotels in Seattle, you know you want to go to Seattle, so how much text would you actually read about how great Seattle is, when you just want to narrow in and find the perfect hotel? do you know what I mean?
We will have blog posts for our top categories as well, so hopefully that helps as well.
Cheers

Good question. We're undertaking a similar project now. It's in your best interest to avoid any possibility of duplicate content, even if it's just a little bit of content.
A simple description such as your example along with local listings is not enough content to make the page a quality resource in the eyes of Google. Ideally you would tailor each category with unique and relevant content. I would recommend a few more paragraphs and unique images. It will be time consuming, but you'll get much better SEO results.
I would also recommend you interlink categories for nearby cities. I hope these suggestions help and wish you the best on your project.

Hi there,
altough is tecnicaly different, the differece is minimum and it might be considered as automated data. It is risky.
You can do those 200 descriptions, do them. I'd not take the chance of google seeing them wrong.
Hope it helps.
GR.

Does having a \ on a URL make a difference?
On our website we have CMS pages which end normally without a /. However when linking from web banners e.c.t it always adds a / on the end. Will this have a negative impact on SEO?

How can I write unique and seductive product descriptions about multiple, very similar products?
We are an eCommerce store who sell personalised phone cases, macbook covers, mugs and the like. Our target market is primarily 16-25 and female. We're in the process of redesigning our website www.mrnutcase.com and we desperately need some more enticing product descriptions before the redesign goes live. The problem is that most of our products are exactly the same. For example iPhone 5 case, iPhone 5S Case etc. At the moment our product descriptions are almost the same, but written in a slightly different way. Not only is this dangerous in terms of duplicate content, but it's also extremely boring for the user. With our users being young and female, writing about boring technical specifications isn't going to cut it with the crowd. Obviously, i want each of our pages to rank in Google so I don't want to NoIndex or canonicalize any pages or anything. How can I write unique and enticing product descriptions for very similar products? Would appreciate any ideas! Thanks, Danny

Blank Title and Description Tags
Hi guys. Some times web platforms that I do work on have pages that I normally do not optimize. They more often than not have blank meta titles and meta descriptions. If I put titles and descriptions on these pages, no matter how minor, would it help the site as a whole to rank better? Thanks!

Wordpress photo blog with sparse text - noindex posts, index categories?
Hi everyone, I have a wordpress blog that is heavy on photos but short on text - most of my posts consist of a photo linking to a full gallery, and a short description of 1-4 sentences. I've often read recommendations to noindex category pages, but in this case I'm wondering if it might be best to noindex the individual posts instead - I'm concerned that the short posts might seem like thin content to Google compared to the category pages which aggregate the posts. Also, some of my categories reflect keywords that I'd like to rank well for. I have about a dozen categories and close to 1000 posts.

A Page For Every Conceivable City In The US - Seeking Community Feedback
Hi Guys! If you ask Local SEO questions here in the Moz Q&A Forum, you and I have probably had the chance to chat at some point or other. This time, I'd like to ask you question! I'd like to request feedback from the community regarding a practice I've been running into for as long as I can remember. Here's what I'm talking about: Let's say the company is a national florist company, a cell phone service company, a website design company. They have national headquarters but either very few or zero physical locations beyond this. In other words, they are virtual rather than local, apart from their national headquarters. Their approach to online marketing revolves around creating a landing page for every conceivable city or zip code in the U.S. I would guess that the thought behind this strategy is that their product is available in each of these cities, and this is their method of getting the word out. Because I work almost exclusively with local rather than virtual companies, the scenario I've described falls somewhat outside of my work experience. It does, however, relate to what I do for a living because I frequently encounter these types of pages (some with near duplicate or very thin content) ranking in the organic results for local searches, alongside the local pack results. My questions are: What do you think of this practice? Does the quality of these types of landing pages factor into your assessment? In other words, if the pages aren't thin or duplicate, do they have value? Is this a practice you would recommend to a national, virtual company? If not, what would you recommend? I really appreciate you taking the time to read my question and consider replying!
