Http resolving to https - why isn't it doing that?
-
Hi everyone
I've just been looking at a few https websites and noticed the http urls weren't redirecting to their https equivalents - why would a website owner not bother redirecting?
As an example: http://www.marksandspencer.com
I look forward to your feedback. L

Though the ideal plan of action would be to move all pages on the site over to https, the HTTPS certificate happens on a webpage by webpage basis—so there are a few things that could be going on here.
First, the website could have chosen to only move forward with procuring the HTTPS certificate for certain webpages and neglected to get it for others, which is why it's only showing up on some.
Second, as mentioned below, they could be in the process of transitioning all pages to https but not be all the way there yet, transitioning the pages in batches but not all batches have been complete yet.
Third, the redirects could simply have been done incorrectly for certain pages!
One of these three options should provide the answer you're looking for.

Hi Luke,
For that site, it looks like some pages are resolving to https and some are not.
It's possible that they are in the middle of a transition to https and are rolling it out slowly over the entire site - it's hard to know.
Asking why a companies wouldn't automatically redirect http to https - again, it's hard to say. It might be that they are also in the middle of a transition to https, or it might be that they simply don't know any better/are using an SEO service that doesn't know any better.
Google will probably be able to figure it out and it shouldn't really hurt them, but if we want things to be perfect and want to make things easier for search engines, then the then URLs should definitely resolve to https, if it's available.
Cheers,
David

Hi there,
I see no reason why they do this on purpose. It's just that the redirection is not done correctly. (it's not done.)

After hack and remediation, thousands of URL's still appearing as 'Valid' in google search console. How to remedy?
I'm working on a site that was hacked in March 2019 and in the process, nearly 900,000 spam links were generated and indexed. After remediation of the hack in April 2019, the spammy URLs began dropping out of the index until last week, when Search Console showed around 8,000 as "Indexed, not submitted in sitemap" but listed as "Valid" in the coverage report and many of them are still hack-related URLs that are listed as being indexed in March 2019, despite the fact that clicking on them leads to a 404. As of this Saturday, the number jumped up to 18,000, but I have no way of finding out using the search console reports why the jump happened or what are the new URLs that were added, the only sort mechanism is last crawled and they don't show up there. How long can I expect it to take for these remaining urls to also be removed from the index? Is there any way to expedite the process? I've submitted a 'new' sitemap several times, which (so far) has not helped. Is there any way to see inside the new GSC view why/how the number of valid URLs in the indexed doubled over one weekend?

When searching for related:katom.com on google, why isn't our website coming up?
A lot of our competitors come up but we aren't coming up. What do we need to do so that google considers us related? Our website is culinarydepotinc.com And I believe not being related to those big competitors affects our SEO, is that correct?

When moving a site from HTTP to HTTPS, will i lose value from the 301 redirect?
I am looking at moving my site from HTTP to full HTTPS, so i will 301 redirect any HTTP requests to their HTTPS counterpart. All my pages in the Google index are HTTP, so will that 301 redirect reduce the value of the pages? Cheers

Any idea why this page isn't indexing?
Hi Mozzers, Question for all of you. Any idea why this page isn't indexing in Google? It's indexing in Bing, but we don't see it in Google's results. It doesn't seem like we have any noindex tags or anyway issues with the robots files either. Any ideas? http://ohva.k12.com/

Using the same content on different TLD's
HI Everyone, We have clients for whom we are going to work with in different countries but sometimes with the same language. For example we might have a client in a competitive niche working in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Swiss German) ie we're going to potentially rewrite our website three times in German, We're thinking of using Google's href lang tags and use pretty much the same content - is this a safe option, has anyone actually tries this successfully or otherwise? All answers appreciated. Cheers, Mel.

New website won't rank for branded keywords in Google, but does in Bing
We launched a website in October www.butterfly.com. The branded product name "Butterfly Body Liners" will not rank until page 2 of Google, but it ranks #1 in Bing. Organic traffic never really picked up so it's not easy to tell if it's been "hit" by any penalty. The strange thing is, this website: http://archive.is/PQZdO is ranking #1. This is an archived version of the site. Does anyone have any insight as to why this is happening?

Was anyone hit by BOTH the 'Phantom' update as well as Penguin 2.0?
I'm interested to know if Phantom was just a "pre-Penguin" 2.0 or if it was a completely different update. Thoughts?
