When moving a site from HTTP to HTTPS, will i lose value from the 301 redirect?
-
I am looking at moving my site from HTTP to full HTTPS, so i will 301 redirect any HTTP requests to their HTTPS counterpart.
All my pages in the Google index are HTTP, so will that 301 redirect reduce the value of the pages?
Cheers

Sean and Logan are right... if you properly redirect http URLs to https URLs on your site, you generally should not lose any search engine rankings as long as you're moving (and redirecting) on the same domain name.
A couple of things to watch out for, though, that can cause a site to lose rankings if not done properly:
-
verify all versions of the site in Google Search Console (http://, http://www, https:// and https://www)
-
crawl your own site and change ALL URLs on the site, even references to image files and external files such as .js files, if you're using absolute and not relative URLs.
-
set up only one redirect (multiple redirects can cause issues). Make sure the site doesn't redirect from http:// to http://www and then from http://www to https://www..
-
make sure your SSL certificate is set up properly (it's easy to screw it up so it gives errors if not set up properly).

Hi Neil,
Earlier this year, Google announced they will not discount a page's value due to a HTTP>HTTPS redirect. You can read more on that Q&A with John Mueller here.
I'd also recommend reading this post that covers everything you need to know about a secure migration as it pertains to SEO: https://moz.com/blog/seo-tips-https-ssl

Hey Neil,
Historically, each redirect chain caused a link to lose a small portion of equity.
A few weeks ago, Google announced that this is no longer the case and 301 redirects DON'T lose any equity any longer. This update now means that domain level redirects won't result in equity loss - if anything, it's best practice to ensure your URLs are HTTPS.
You can check out the blog here - https://moz.com/blog/301-redirection-rules-for-seo
All the best,
Sean

Http - Https Issue
Hey there Mozzers, I have a site that few months ago went from being http - https. All the links redirect perfect but after scanning my site with Screaming Frog i get a bunch of 503 errors. After looking into my website I see that a lot of links in my content and menu have as a link the http url. For example my homepage has content that interlinks to the http version of the site. And even though when I test it it redirects correctly after scanning with Screaming frog it reports back as 503. Any ideas what's going on? Thanks in advance

Images Returning 404 Error Codes. 301 Redirects?
We're working with a site that has gone through a lot of changes over the years - ownership, complete site redesigns, different platforms, etc. - and we are finding that there are both a lot of pages and individual images that are returning 404 error codes in the Moz crawls. We're doing 301 redirects for the pages, but what would the best course of action be for the images? The images obviously don't exist on the site anymore and are therefore returning the 404 error codes. Should we do a 301 redirect to another similar image that is on the site now or redirect the images to an actual page? Or is there another solution that I'm not considering (besides doing nothing)? We'll go through the site to make sure that there aren't any pages within the site that are still linking to those images, which is probably where the 404 errors are coming from. Based on feedback below it sounds like once we do that, leaving them alone is a good option.

After 301 redirects average rankings went down a little. Any idea?
We have changed the design of a website, from an oscommerce site to a new responsive website with customized programming. After the 301 redirects we have lost 1 to 2 positions in Google Rankings of the most visited categories. This are real data <colgroup><col span="5" width="80"></colgroup>

301 redirect subdomain to path and 301 for popular pages
We have very popular pages that have many backlinks. www.chezmaya.com/jeux/game33.htm have so many backlinks and it's very popular. Now If i'm moving this page to a new path like : http://www.chezmaya.com/jeux/component/mtree/Défouloir/Game33/details.html with a 301. Your SEOmoz toolbar is now giving a very low PA:1 and mR:0.00 for this new page. My question is after you crawl my site again would you change the values to what /jeux/game33.htm got before ? We used to have jeux.chezmaya.com and moved to www.chezmaya.com/jeux/

Same here PA:1 and mR:0.00 for this page. Also Matt Cutts say that Google does transfer the juice from the old page to the new one. I already saw one url changed in a search for puzzle, it's at the same position it was before, but it say's 6 days ago beside. So I wonder if this is temporary and it will move with time? Thanks0 -
Duplicate Content / 301 redirect Ariticle issue
Hello, We've got some articles floating around on our site nlpca(dot)com like this article: http://www.nlpca.com/what-is-dynamic-spin-release.html that's is not linked to from anywhere else. The article exists how it's supposed to be here: http://www.dynamicspinrelease.com/what-is-dsr/ (our other website) Would it be safe in eyes of both google's algorithm (as much as you know) and with Panda to just 301 redirect from http://www.nlpca.com/what-is-dynamic-spin-release.html to http://www.dynamicspinrelease.com/what-is-dsr/ or would no-indexing be better? Thank you!

301 Redirect shenanigans.
So our website (www.FrontlineMobility.com) Has a canonical link redirect to the non www. version. However when I put in website.com it comes up with a small list of links and says this site links to www.website.com. So I'm curious if I used to wrong canonical linking method( that is the method I tried and I placed it in the Head Tags.) I greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter ^.^
