Magento Core_URL_Rewrite Problems
-
Hi Everyone,
We are currently caught between a rock and a hard place with Magento and are wondering if anyone else had similar problems and could share their advice.
Our Core_URL_Rewrite now containt 1.3 million records for an account that has 12000 products on 4 different store views. This has ballooned past the point that we are no longer able to reindex our URL Management.
The option that is being suggested to us is to truncate the table and start over, though this will essentially kill our SEO for those pages.(Which as there are duplicates, I can only imagine how much they are going to be penalized by it)
Would anyone have any advice other than truncating and starting over?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,
I found the exact problem you are facing with a solution on this link
http://magento.stackexchange.com/questions/17553/magento-core-url-rewrite-table-excessively-large
There are patch codes available on this link, however do read this reply on this page
Bugs in earlier (and possibly current) versions of Magento is one. Another is there's logic in this table that tries to track changes to the URL key value so that 301/302 rewrites are setup for old products. Because of this, and complicating things, truncating the table and regenerating may make existing URL rewrites go away, and this will have an unknown effect on your search engine listing (not necessity bad, just hard to predict).
My general advice to clients who ask is
-
Leave the giant growing table as is if you don't have a good handle on your URL/SEO situation
-
Until the table size starts being a problem (generating site maps, for example). When that happens, get a handle on your URL/SEO situation.
-
Once you have a handle on your URL/SEO situation, backup the table, then truncate the table and regenerate. Address any URL/SEO problems caused by the truncating.
-
Automate step 3
Trying to fix this on the Magento code level is admirable, but you'll be swimming upstream. Sometimes it's better to accept that "That's just Magento being Magento", and to solve the problem with and external process.
I hope this helps, if you have further questions, then post a response, I will be happy to answer.
Regards,
Vijay

I'm not sure the answers previously presented are related to the issues you're having. Having worked with Magento for a long time, this can be an issue that occurs over and over again.
To answer your initial question, truncating your core_url_rewrite table will remove all of these URLs, but it'll only delay the problem until it reoccurs again in the future (unless you've had a problem in the past which has been rectified). You're also correct in that any rewrites in the system previously there will disappear, so you'll probably end up with a lot of crawl issues appearing in Search Console.
Your best move would be to find out why you have so many URLs in there in the first place. Do you have a huge product catalog with multiple stores? Or is this something to do with an issue in your Magento version or some setup issues. The most common time this usually occurs is if two products get added to your site with the same URL Key. Every time the reindex process runs, your core_url_rewrite table will grow. You could check this by looking at the number of rows in the table, reindexing the site and if it grows further, then it's likely to be the problem. The quickest way to fix this is to ensure all URL key are unique.
There's also an article here about duplicate keys - https://firebearstudio.com/blog/magento-url-reindex-core_url_rewrite-duplicates-patch.html - this should hopefully clear the issue.
I hope this helps! If it doesn't solve the problem, then sending over a little more information around the number of stores, catalog site and the split between system generated URL rewrites and custom URL rewrites would be great so we can try to help further!
Thanks,
Lewis -
This is an issue to to set-up. When you set up multiple ecommerce websites on Magento as 'Stores', then all SKUs will load on other domains. if they were set-up as 'Websites' then this would alleviate the issue. However, with Stores you are able to share shopping carts (i.e. Add a product from website A and checkout on website B).
What I did was turn off the XML cron jobs and set-up cross-domain canonicals. Also make sure your session IDs (/?SID=) are working properly. Not sure if this solves the technical issues, but should help clear up dupe content.
-
Is it creating a new url for each option (size, color, etc) as well as what page it shows up on or other various sort orders (by price, by size, etc.) and session id's that you could exclude? Are you sure they are truly duplicates?

Travel site schema problems
I'm developing a travel site for my home state (Kansas - http://www.kansasisbeautiful.com though it's still has some development being worked on), but struggling to find scheme to work with for some items. So far my site is laid out by both region (northeast Kansas, western Kansas, etc.) and location types (waterfalls, parks, etc.). I'm currently working on coding in schema markup. I've found schema types for waterfalls, parks and landmarks, but I'm struggling to find anything for scenic drives (or highways, drives, anything related), hiking/biking trails and regions (northeast Kansas, southeast Kansas, etc.) The question I have is: What can I do to still try and put some kind of markup when there's nothing available that fits the item I'm trying to markup?

Too many redirects Homepage Problem
During a site move, a sub domain of website a redirected all pages to the homepage of website b. resulting a homepage algorithmic penalty for website b. The sub domain was deleted - and the sitemove for the main domain went through ok. However website b has 80,000 incoming links from the sub domain of website a. is there anything else that needs to be done to "inform" google that the mistake was fixed?

Are iframes really an organic search problem?
I'm helping someone with a new site that will have pages for organic search that contain embedded video. Some will be youtube embeds and some will be wistia embeds. These pages will have several hundred words of transcript text and the embeds (iframes) iframes themselves will be rather small, but expandable and possibly more than one per page. The transcript text area is more like 80% of the page. Do you think this is an organic search problem? I use one site audit tool that calls this out as a serious warning. Currently, the embedded player(s) are a column down the left side, about 1/4th of the width of the page, and the transcripts are everything else, wrapping around it. The transcripts are fully readable and not hidden in some kind of expandable accordion or anything. Does layout matter in this issue? Thanks... Darcy

Problem: Magento prioritises product URL's without categories?
HI there, we are moving a website from Shoptrader to Magento, which has 45.000 indexations.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | onlinetrend
yes shoptrader made a bit of a mess. Trying to clean it up now. there is a 301 redirect list of all old URL's pointing to the new one product can exist in multiple categories want to solve this with canonical url’s for instance: shoptrader.nl/categorieA/product has 301 redirect towards magento.nl/nl/categorieA/product shoptrader.nl/categorieA/product-5531 has 301 redirect towards magento.nl/nl/categorieA/product shoptrader.nl/categorieA/product¤cy=GBP has 301 redirect towards magento.nl/nl/categorieA/product shoptrader.nl/categorieB/product has 301 redirect towards magento.nl/nl/categorieB/product, has canonical tag towards magento.nl/nl/categorieA/product shoptrader.nl/categorieB/product?language=nl has 301 redirect towards magento.nl/nl/categorieB/product, has canonical tag towards magento.nl/nl/categorieA/product Her comes the problem:
New developer insists on using /productname as canonical instead of /category/category/productname, since Magento says so. The idea is now to redirect to /category/category/productname and there will be a canonical URL on these pages pointing to /productname, loosing some link juice twice. So in the end indexation will take place on /productname … if Google picks it up the 301 + canonical. Would be more adviseable to direct straight to /productname (http://moz.com/community/q/is-link-juice-passed-through-a-301-and-a-canonical-tag), but I prefer to point to one URL with categories attached. Which has more advantages(?): clear menustructure able to use subfolders in mobile searchresults missing breadcrumb What would you say?0 -
Is Google indexing Mp3 audio and MIDI music files? Can that cause any duplicate problems?
Hello, I own virtualsheetmusic.com website and we have several thousands of media files (Mp3 and MIDI files) that potentially Google can index. If that's the case, I am wondering if that could cause any "duplicate" issues of some sort since many of such media files have exact file names or same meta information inside. Any thoughts about this issue are very welcome! Thank you in advance to anyone.

Problem with 404 and 500 Status code pages
Dear SeoMozzers, I have a question related to one of the sites I have recently changed the URL, going from http:example.com to http://www.example.com I did 301 redirects, as I was recommended to do. In the past month I have noticed an incredible drop in Google's rankings for many keywords and checking the crawling errors appearing in the SEO Crawling Report I have witnessed mayhem with Canonical/301 redirect types of errors. Now, things seem a little better. I have noticed a reduction in the number of 301 and Canonical type or errors (by the way, I still do not get the Canonical issue :-)). My little questions are the following: Will I ever go back to the positions I used to occupy before I redesigned the site's URL structure? I have now noticed that the SeoMoz Crawling report show "404 Staus" errors and one "505 Status" error. Can somebody please tell me how to fix the 404 Status Errors? Can I fix them by myself, or maybe I can ask the guys at the web hosting company, since I am really bad at taking care of technical issues? Thank you for the time you took to clarify my doubts. Ad maiora, Sal

SEO value of Articles, Magento vs. Wordpress?
Our e-commerce site is running on the Magento platform while the blog for the site is integrated and is on the Wordpress platform. The blog is not on a separate subdomain, so it is on www.website.con/blog. What I wonder is how Google treats information on a Wordpress blog compared to pages created in the Magento CMS pages. Would a high quality content article posted as a blog post on the Wordpress have a lower SEO value than a page on the Magento? Thanks.
