Reducing multi-page website to one page & SEO ramifications?
-
Hello there!
I just want to check in before I do this. I am reducing a multi-page website to one page (temporarily, but for at least 4-6 months). I will be 301 redirecting all old pages to the one, new home page. The new home page has a lot more content, long and short keyword phrases.
Aside from losing the benefit of internal links, will reducing the number of website pages hurt a ranking? Does having associated keywords on other website pages provide benefit to another (in this case Home) page?
Thanks so much for your invaluable advice!

simple, you have 1 logical URL with a bunch of anchors around the page that scrolls to different "subpages", but again, you are still on that one URL for ranking and optimization purposes. Google does not consider your different sections of the same page (despite the change in /pagepart or # part of the web address) as separate pages.
Now, imagine you sell SEO & web design in Austin, TX.
If you had a single page to try and optimize and rank for two sets of keywords related to each service, the page will not be focused on either one specifically. This means a competitor who decided to separate out their pages topically with unique URLs for each can also separate their anchor text profile for each page, using proper and old school meta tags in the right places instead of having a bunch of H1s all over one page, among a bunch of other things that they can segregate and focus to optimize better, will have a much easier time getting their independent subpages rank better than your catch all page.
I guess the best way I can describe it is: do you like to go to a long ass page and scroll down scroll down to find what you are looking for.... or do you like to land on a precisely relevant page with what you are looking for right up top and also all over that page with all the juicy details?
I guarantee you most users will answer for the latter.
For these reasons, it is a much tougher task to make a 1-pager win from an SEO-standpoint when compared to multi-page competition (assuming everyone involved is doing a fine job on both sides), but more importantly you must think more of UX than UI. You must think of the experience than the trend. Trends die off. One-pagers are a limited application trend that does not apply to a lot of sites and businesses out there.

Thanks sym-admin. Appreciate your response. What I'd really love to know is why? What are the technical SEO reasons for why a single page faces more issues for ranking properly if one is only targeting one keyword phrase? This infers that keywords on other pages of a website contribute to the overall ranking of one page of the site. Is this correct, or is it for another reason (aside from internal links to other pages).?

Generally this is a bad idea. Single page sites face more issues for ranking properly for the right keywords than separate pages topically speaking. Jordan is right to say you could see a drop in ranking and ?I add perhaps traffic as well.

Hi Jordan, and thanks.
So to go a little more deeply into your answer, are you saying that associated keywords on other pages of a website contribute to the ranking of, for example, the home page? So even though Google doesn't rank a website, it ranks a page, the rest of the website does count towards the page ranking?

You could see a drop in ranking. It is difficult for a single web page to be relevant for a large set of keywords for searchers.

For an e-commerce product category page that has several funnels to specific products, for SEO purposes does it matter whether the category page's overview content is above or below those funnels?
We manage an e-commerce site. On a category page, there are several funnels to specific products. We moved the category overview content below those funnels to make it easier for users to quickly get to products. Seems more user friendly to me, but could that move of the main content to the lower part of the page be a negative ranking factor?

Good sources of information for product page SEO from a manufacturers perspective
I'm working with a manufacturer whose product copy is used by many many many retailers online. This copy is typically exactly the same or very similar to their own brand website. We're ok with that as most of the time our brand website is seen as the source of the information. Retailers, however, aren't so ok. Understandably they want unique product description content but we can't supply that for every retailer. So I want to acknowledge that whilst unique product copy is important there are other factors that they should consider such as site usability, the frequency and recency or ratings/reviews, etc. I've skimmed through google and reviewed the message boards and can see a number of posts touching on this topic but I wonder if anyone can recommend good sources or care to share their insights? Thanks in advance

Q& A section - SEO perspective
We have a software in our website where customers can ask questions and it will send questions to people who already bought it to get answers. The answers are there in each item page. So each item page has item description , reviews, and Q&A sections. We get lot of questions and answers and software is great but we don't know if it really is helping us for the huge price we are paying them. In an SEO perspective will it help due to content or will it dilute main keywords due to the Q&A content? Thanks RB

Google Search - One page having problems
this issue is concerning my site - cruvoir.com we retail designer clothing online, and currently have 17 'designer' pages - one for each manufacturer brand name. We target these brand names for our campaign and track the progress with Moz and try to focus them in Google search. Of many of the designer names, we rank pretty well in Google search (usually under #15 when searching for the specific brand. All brands are doing well, except one brand : "Lost And Found" - a designer label we carry. This is the page for this brand name : https://cruvoir.com/5-lost-and-found we cannot figure it out. It happens to be our most important label we carry. when we search for this brand name or include it in any other search terms, we never are in the google search results. I expect it is a crawl issue, but we have covered all our ground in optimizing this brand page. It seems this page is also indexed with Google. But we cannot figure out why it does not rank us in search.

Google is indexing spam pages from my site. What is the most effective way to get ride of the search results? Pages are deleted now but should I do something more?
A long time ago I created a forum (Invision Power Board) and it got full of spam. Massive amounts! /forum/ I've now deleted the forum but the spam pages are still indexed on Google. Can I do something else to hurry up the process to get ride of them?

Should one page with markers or six separate pages?
Hi - I'm working on a site that was set up with 6 bios on one page, with markers jumping to each person's name. I was thinking about separating those into 6 different pages, but not sure if that's the right thing to do. Advice about keeping the bios on one page vs splitting them up? (Am I more likely to rank for those peoples' names if I have a unique page, or is the one page url with each different marker in it, just as good?) Ranking well for those names isn't a huge goal of the site, but it would be nice to make the choice that would help with that rank. Thanks for your input Emma

Would it be bad to change the canonical URL to the most recent page that has duplicate content, or should we just 301 redirect to the new page?
Is it bad to change the canonical URL in the tag, meaning does it lose it's stats? If we add a new page that may have duplicate content, but we want that page to be indexed over the older pages, should we just change the canonical page or redirect from the original canonical page? Thanks so much! -Amy
