If I change Tags and Categories in Wordpress blog post, will it negatively affect SEO and cause 404s?

Hi,
I have belatedly come to the conclusion that I have been using tags and categories when blogging in wordpress incorrectly. The result is that Google seems to prefer to show my archives and tags in search results rather than the post itself. Not good UX.
As the site is only a few months old, am I best to learn my lesson and tag and categorize correctly moving forward
or
Should I go back in to these posts and clean them up & categorize and tag correctly. If I do this, will it cause 404s and hurt my SEO?

Thanks Tymen, Anthony - that helps a lot. It is indeed - domain.com/post-title (no category in url) so I am safe to clean up the site without repercussions. Better to learn this lesson now than down the line. Cheers!

The answer to this question will depend a bit on how you have your current blog post URL slug set up. If you are using domain.com/category/post-title-here and then change your categories, this will cause 404s (which you can fix by redirecting).
If you are using a domain.com/post-title-here or other option, you will be just fine to clean up, edit and alter your category and tags. I would suggest NoIndexing your tags. The decision of NoIndexing categories will depend on how you plan on using them.
If the site is only a few months old, I strongly suggest fixing this now and setting yourself up for better long term success.

Hi John,
You could clean them up and 301 redirect the old/wrong tags/ categories to the correct new page/post. This way the visitors will not notice anything and you let Google know where you want people to go to.

In this article it is explained how to "noindex" Tags and Categories in WP. This way you will avoid a lot of duplicate content.

Can a CMS affect SEO?
As the title really, I run www.specialistpaintsonline.co.uk and 6 months ago when I first got it it had bad links which google had put a penalty against it so losts it value. However the penalty was lift in Sept, the site corresponds to all guidelines and seo work has been done and constantly monitored. the issue I have is sales and visits have not gone up, we are failing fast and running on 2 or 3 sales a month isn't enough to cover any sort of cost let alone wages. hence my question can the cms have anything to do with it? Im at a loss and go grey any help or advice would be great. thanks in advance.

Wordpress Woocomerce Recommended SEO URL structure
Hi Mozzers ! Thanks for looking. I have a new shop in development (http://www.vintageheirloom.biz), I'm now using WordPress & Woocommerce. I've asked Woocommerce whether it is possible to remove the 'shop' and 'product-category' categories. They say it is, but it isn't recommended, it can slow site speed & create possible duplicate pages. I'm wondering what seasoned SEO experts opinions are on my particular structure? I've heard that a flat structure is recommended, but ecommerce shops as I understand pose their own issues, so any feedback would be appreciated.. Here's some URL examples: http://vintageheirloom.biz/shop/bags/ - this for the category bags http://vintageheirloom.biz/product-category/bags/shoulder-bags/ - this for shoulder bags a child of bags category http://vintageheirloom.biz/shop/2-55-bags/vintage-chanel-caviar-skin-2-55-bag/ - a product The last URL contains the category 2-55 bags. The products name also includes the phrases 2-55 bag. Should this level of repetition be avoided or is it best to keep the whole phrase 'vintage-chanel-caviar-skin-2-55-bag/' for SEO purposes? SEO ultimate seems to work ok for other url I have on this problem. http://www.pureescapism.co.uk and performing the on page grader for hair salon broadstairsI have canonicalizer on for the plug in and I have made it the rel=canonical targetIt tells me I haven't.Further down I don't get a tick also and am told : Remove all but a single canonical URL tag.Not aware I have more than one.I am also told : No More Than One Meta Description Element ( Cant see how I can do that either as I havent changed any code)Help please

Changing to a new Google Analytics Profile - Will I lose my history?
Hello, I have a new client and due to issues with the way the original Google Analytics account was set up, the owner won't make me an admin. So, I'm forced to create a new GA profile. This is more of a technical question than pure SEO per se, but I am guessing that some folks here may have covered this and so I would appreciate any questions. I am moving from a WordPress.com-based blog (hosted on WordPress) to a WordPress installation on my own server (as suggested by folks in another thread here). As part of this I want to move from the format blog.<mydomain>.com to www.mydomain.com\blog. I have installed WordPress on my server and have imported posts from the hosted site to my own server. How should I manage the transition from first format to the second? Duplicate Content Caused By Blog Filters
We are getting some duplicate content warnings based on our blog. Canonical URL's can work for some of the pages, but most of the duplicate content is caused by blog posts appearing on more than 1 URL. What is the best way to fix this?
