Keyword cannibalisation - Any way to find out who is eating who?
-
I have a question regarding some keywords in my site.
For some reason, I am ranking for the wrong keyword in some SERPs or my top page is ranking instead.
Example: graphic design is ranking for web design
Is there any tool or way to figure out how, why or who is eating each other up so to speak?
Would you have any advice or links to good sources on how to resolve this issue so that the correct page shows in search for it's particular keyword?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Kuruto! Do these responses help to answer your question or are you looking for more information? If you're good to go, please mark this as answered. Thanks!

Hi,
Andy is absolutely correct! It is likely that your pages are not different enough from each other to avoid ranking for the same keywords.
One tool that you can use is Moz's On-Page Grader. This tool will give you very specific feedback about how you can better optimize a page for the specific keyword you want it to rank for.
Hope this helps!

Hi,
Keyword cannibalisation is a problem that many sites face and it is normally down to pages not being targeted enough, or being too similar to one another.
The example that you used there, Graphic Design and Web Design, if either is talking about the other, makes too many references or doesn't include the words and phrases that Google would expect to see, then you are likely to face this problem.
Rand went over this a while ago and suggested that if the wrong pages are ranking for the wrong pages, then you need to devalue the wrong pages by removing those words and phrases that are causing you these issues.
I hope this helps.

Does a GTLD extension 'count' as part of the target keyword?
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. Reading about GTLDs, I came across this quote from TSO Host: 'What we don’t know is whether an extension can double up as a keyword, which is picked up by Google and treated identically to the rest of a domain name. I.e. - would ‘bristolguitars.music’ have more ranking potential than ‘bristolguitars.com’ as ‘music’ is a relevant search word?' Source: https://www.tsohost.com/blog/how-do-new-gtlds-affect-seo Does anyone know if a GTLD extension does double up as a keyword? For example, if Nike buys 'Nike.shoes', does this double as the keyword 'Nike shoes', or is Google and other search engines just looking at the domain name _before _the GTLD extension? I'm looking at .photography for examples (not my niche) and seeing folks are having mixed results ranking for 'Keyword + Photography', so would be keen to hear your thoughts.

How to target long tail keywords
Apologies if this is already answered, I'm a newbie. I'm looking to determine how to target long tail keywords. I'm supporting a site that is new and with very small budgets in the very competitive life insurance market. If we devise a list of long tail keywords, should we then add those to the page titles, meta descriptions etc rather than the short tail ones that the site will never rank for anyway?

Single Keyword Penalty?
Hi guys, I recently taken over SEO for strikebowling.com.au and I'm stumped to what has happened with the keyword 'Bowling' for the home page. Historically they have been ranking 5-6 for the year and they do come up in the local results. Start of September, bang they drop out of the top 100 for Bowling. No other words seem to be effected. However the keyword 'Bowling Alley' did improve around the same time for an internal page. What could have happened? A single keyword penalty? No messages in Webmaster tools No dodgy link building Look forward to some theories. Regards, Corey

Proper way to 404 a page on an Ecommerce Website
Hello. I am working on a website that has over 15000 products. When one of these is no longer available - like it's discontinued or something - the page it's on 302s to a 404 page. Example - www.greatdomain.com/awesome-widget Awesome widget is no longer available www. greatdomain.com/awesome-widget 302s to -www.greatdomain.com/404 page. For the most part, these are not worthy of 301s because of lack of page rank/suitable LPs, but is this the correct way to handle them for search engines? I've seen varying opinions. Thanks!

Long tail keywords and duplicate content (product description)
Hi SEO pro's, how are you doing these days? Hope everything is fine... Let's get down to business: I've got a little question about ecommerce sites with duplicate content (product descriptions). I'm already ranking top #1 for exact keyword matche's (did a lot of backlink work with exact keyword). That's fine. The question is: long tail keywords still getting lower results than the competitors, because they published the content first. How to beat them? What I need to do/work to outrank competitors on long tail keywords? (I really need this because almost keywords/products from my niche only have 10% of exact search's). Hope someone can give me a word of light on this! Thanks!
