Community Discussion: How is Your Brand Scaling Effective Email Outreach?
-
Recently, I wrote a Moz post on what I think comprises effective online marketing outreach via email: Why You Should Steal My Daughter's Playbook for Effective Email Outreach
Though I'm by no means an outreach expert, it's a topic I do feel qualified to talk about, owing to having worked with numerous PR/Outreach folks, seeing what works and what does not, and because of my experience working for and with Fortune 25s in a sales, outreach capacity. I'm wondering...
- What's the biggest challenge you've faced with regard to outreach?
- How are you addressing it?
- What's the No. 1 tactic you've used to attain success in email outreach?

Have to confess: Track, Test, Tweak, Repeat is legit.
Similar to my Refine, Revise, Repeat for content creation and amplification.
So often we hear that something or another didn't work, when in reality the brand or the individual either didn't optimize the experience for the desired outcome, didn't have clear, defined goals in place or lacked the ability to track the effort's performance.
What I love about email is it's easy to track. From there, it's all about the TTR

Our company has learned a lot of lessons through A/B testing various components of our email newsletter. We started by testing subject lines, then pre-headers, then calls-to-action throughout the content of the email itself. Each of these tests has given us new insights into what our email subscribers are looking for from our emails.
Of course, this is all dependent on the industry of the clients you're managing email marketing for. Some of our clients are in industries where their subscribers are constantly searching for deals and promotions, so we lead with those. Others are in industries where their subscribers are more interested in tips and tricks, so we lead with those.
We were only able to determine which of these tactics worked through which industry using our signature method of TTTR: Track, Test, Tweak, Repeat. We track the data associated with each email, test out new methods, tweak the tests to try new things, and repeat!
Hope this helps!

Should I create new content or outreach for links for a specific KW?
A few keywords my company would like to go after are: Mobile homes for sale Manufactured homes Mobile Home Dealers. The question is should we create unique content around these keywords then market it heavily in hopes to rank that new individual page / post OR should we just be doing outreach for back links and anchored text to link to our primary domain that is already much stronger with a 38 DA? Thoughts?

Outreach with your own name
I always send outreach under my own name. I use either my private e-mail address or an own e-mail address from the clients domain. I just send out 10 emails and I did get 6 replays which 4 of them started about my SEO background . The response rate was great, but my SEO background isn’t in this case. How do you guys handle this situation? I have always used my own name because it feels right. It’s also handy in case I pick up the phone or visit an link prospect in person. The disadvantage is that people directly doubt my sincerity or they want to sell me a paid placement. Love to hear your take on this.

How long does it take for spam link building to take effect?
I saw a recent surge of a low quality website to the top of SERPS, and looking at the link profile is almost 5,000 newly acquired linking RD's, with a total of over 49,000 links. I looked at a bunch of the links and they are super spammy (foreign language, way unrelated and out of context, spam sites with garbage content, pages of paid links to the websites subpages, etc). My question is, how long does it take for Google to recognize this and penalize this shady site?

Finding email addresses: Link Building
We're going to have 50-100 useful, well-written articles and we want them to be linkbait, and to use them in our backlink campaign. I assume when doing a backlink campaign, it is very important who you send your email to. What are the best ways to find the right email address, and who/what am I looking for?

Is it ok for a web design company to have a branded footer link on their client's sites?
Now I know that in general footer links to your site from another site are bad...this is because they are very often spammy...however I like to think that Google is pretty smart and I am of the opinion that a web design company should be able to link back to their own site. Here's why: If a visitor comes across a site that they love the design of, and they want a new website built...why shouldn't they be able to click through to the web designers site? (as long as the client is happy to link to it of course) I also feel that if there are a whole bunch of high authority/pagerank websites have been designed by a web design company and they therefore have a footer link pointing to them, it's probably a pretty good sign that they're a good web designer. Is it not? In saying this I think that the link anchor text should be branded rather than keywords. For example I usually write "Web Design by Static Shift" I'm interested to hear people's thoughts. Am I being blinded by my bias? Thoughts aside, and onto the facts...what are people's experiences with footer links for a web design company. Do they help or hinder?

What is the best way to obtain a large number of branded links in the fastest, most efficient way? White Hat only please.
Just foresee this issue coming up with a couple of clients and while I am preparing a strategy of my own, I felt it would be helpful to ask the community their thoughts as well.

Is publishing press releases for SEO thorugh newswire sites as effective post panda?
Does anyone have any knowledge/thoughts on how leading newswire sites have been effected by Google's latest updates, i.e. Panda? To date this has been a method (alongside others) I have sucessfully used to build links, but the results of late have not been as good for some clients and I'm beginning to question how effective this is - so I would be very interested to hear anyone else's experiences in this area?
