What to do when half of my pages aren't being viewed?
-
My site is roughly 1000 pages. I've begun refreshing older content.
I noticed about half of my pages have no incoming traffic.
Should I look at combining some of these pages and 301 redirecting the former links to that new "bigger" page and then having my home page show that new consolidated content?
They don't have good back links either.
Example layout now:
Home Page
- Restaurants [show list of cuisines]
- User clicks on Italian [show list of all Italian restaurants]
- Choice 1
- Choice 2
Even though my main page is seen by about 100,000 people a month, it doesn't seem like anyone is interested in going down that path so none of the restaurants are clicked.
How could I improve the user interface/experience and incorporate best Google practices?
Thanks,
Steve

I like what Chris said here. If your goal is to get more pageviews on these deeper results, then removing the phone and address and only having it on the restaurant listing page may get another click.
However, your main issue in getting users to stay on the site longer is still present. What's the #1 thing other people want to know when thinking about going to a restaurant? "Is the food any good?" Users will still probably try and leave to find reviews on YELP or Google. Maybe trying to include those valuable things will keep users on.
Also, I've noticed your Google Analytics tracking script is in the footer. I know this topic is debated, but you're probably losing out on some data for users who bounce before that script loads. This may make things look worse and increase your bounce rate, but it will give you a more accurate representation of how users are interacting with your site.

Hi Stephen,
I followed your path from homepage -> Restaurants -> Italian and found it to be very easy and user-friendly. I think part of your problem with users not following the whole path, may exist with them receiving all the information they need once they hit the "Italian" page. Offered on each one of your restaurant panels are the phone number, address and a link to the restaurant's website. After seeing this information, I'd assume most interested users would visit the website directly or call the place. At first, I did not realize you could click the restaurant's name in order to receive more information, which I assume may be why you're not receiving those extra clicks. I'd try implementing a call-to-action button on each one of your panels such as a "more info" button. I believe that will help direct users to your individual restaurant pages. It may not be groundbreaking, but I think it might be worth testing. Anyway, that's what I got for ya. Best of luck!

Our protected pages 302 redirect to a login page if not a member. Is that a problem for SEO?
We have a membership site that has links out in our unprotected pages. If a non-member clicks on these links it sends a 302 redirect to the login / join page. Is this an issue for SEO? Thanks!

301 Re-directing 'empty' domains
Hello, My client had purchased a few domains and 301 re-directed them, pointing to our main website. As far as I am aware the 'empty domains' are brand related but no content has ever been displayed on them, and I doubt they have much authority. The issue here is that we took a dive in ranking for our main keyword, I had a look on ahrefs and found the below: | www.empty-domain/our-keyword | 30 | 19 | 1 | fb 0

Could the 'empty' URL in question been causing us any issues? I understand that this is terrible practice for 301 redirects, I was hoping someone in the community could shed light on any possible solution for this.0 -
Hi! I'm wondering whether for keyword SEO - a url should be www.salshoes.com/shoes/mens/day-wear (so with a few parent categories) or www.salshoes.com/shoes-mens-day-wear is ok for on page optimization?

The use of tabs on productpages, do or don't?
Does google has any trouble reading content tabs? The content is not loaded by ajax and is already in the page source code.
Technical SEO | | wilcoXXL
As i'm checking some big e-commerce websites or (amazon.com for example) they get rid of the tabs with content and put the different content below eachother. Is his better for SEO purpose? But what about user experience? For users it think it is easier to navigate by tabs then to have a long page to scroll. What do you guys think about this issue?0 -
Is the Authority of Individual Pages Diluted When You Add New Pages?
I was wondering if the authority of individual pages is diluted when you add new pages (in Google's view). Suppose your site had 100 pages and you added 100 new pages (without getting any new links). Would the average authority of the original pages significantly decrease and result in a drop in search traffic to the original pages? Do you worry that adding more pages will hurt pages that were previously published?

Wordpress & use of 'www' vs not for webmaster tools - explanation needed
I am having a hard time understanding the issue of canonization of site pages, specifically in regards to the 'www' or 'non-www' versions of a site. And specifically in regards to wordpress. I can see that it doesn't matter whether you type in 'www' or not in the url for a wordpress site, what is going on in the back end that allows this? When I link up to google webmaster tools, should i use www or not? thanks for any help d

Website isn't Ranking for Any Keyword
Hi, I launched a playhouses website in april this year and have been steadily link building to it over the past few months. I have gotten all of the internal optimisation correct (that I can see) however it is still not ranking for any keyword and suprinsgly all of our traffic is comming either direct or through bing. The website is showing as being in googles index however it is still not ranking for even the smallest of niche keywords. The only penalty I can see is that we have some spammy blog links that my colleague has gotten which I have been trying to counteract with high quality guest blogging. Any input is welcome the url is http://www.playhouses.co.uk/ Simon
