Page not Ranking I feel helpless!
-
Hi there
I have been working at SEO for quite some time and I am such a noob. I have even done an online course. I am at my wits end.
My website is https://www.urbani.com.au. I changed to https about 1 month ago.
I want to rank for "outdoor furniture perth". Recently my homepage has stopped ranking for this keyword, and a useless blog page started ranking instead (www.urbani.com.au/tag/outdoor-furniture-perth/), on page 5 of google. I got rid of that page and redirected it to my homepage.
Do you know what the problem is? Why won't google rank my homepage for "outdoor furniture perth"? It is ranking for "outdoor wicker furniture perth", but for "outdoor furniture perth" it has disappeared from the face of this earth.
Thank you so much, if I can get help for this it would save my business!

I'm using a combination of tools but the ones that returned errors were Avast and McAfee - basic options but still worth having a look at. It's a better explanation than the alternative!
Links are indexed with every crawl cycle. It usually takes 2 weeks or so to register new backlinks on your site.
The content will really help, and from what you are telling me it sounds as if you are on the right track - just keep finding those relevant blogs and continuing to be a helpful poster in those communities. The links and the trust will come from that.
All the best!

Hi Rob
Thank you very much for your help.
Would you mind telling me the security software you use? The website has been cleaned and is free from malware, but it is still blacklisted by some security software- I need to contact them and request to have my website removed from their blacklist. Thanks, I hope getting more backlinks helps. I have been gaining high quality backlinks recently. A trusted outdoor patio company is even writing a blog article about me. I have also joined many home forums and have been posting a lot so I don't look like an advertiser, then I will post about my business when it is appropriate. I am not sure how long the back-linking takes to register with Google.
Thanks, it is a good idea for me to get stronger content. A lot of my competitors have weak content too- but I think they have better backlink profiles.
Thank you so much again for your help!

Hi James
Thanks so much for your help. What you've said makes total sense and is very smart. I can see why more trusted sites can get away with more. Whereas mine is less trusted, and it is obviously trying too hard.
Changing to https might have invited new consideration. Thanks again!

Hi Whitney,
A couple of things:
-
I went to check your site and my security software has returned a malware warning. I would consider taking a look at the security of your site with your hosting company or asking an IT expert to give you a hand.
-
From what you describe, your lack of rankings is almost certainly attributable to your link profile. I won't say that's the case 100% since there can be other factors, but links represent a major factor of any page ranking on Google. They are effectively "votes of confidence" in your content since they suggest that visitors found your content noteworthy enough to link it to their site/blog/social media, etc.
The reason you are probably not ranking is that you either:
a) Have insufficient links to your page
b) Have weak/irrelevant links to your page
c) Have competitors with stronger link profiles
d) Have poor anchor text procedures that are reducing the impact of your linksYou will likely need a link profile audit to determine which of these is the culprit.
- You Have Weak Content
If the content on your page is weak, you will not rank. That's pretty well known by now. However, if your content is strongly weighted towards more long-tail keywords (outdoor wicker furniture perth vs. outdoor furniture perth, for example), then you will rank for long-tail keywords before generic ones. This is called "semantic keyword ranking" and is something Google is using to help consumers find specific products, services, information, etc. that they are looking for.
You may need to diversify your page with new content targeting the terms you are looking for. Changing titles, headings, etc. is not enough any more. It is also the reason why your blog post (with outdoor furniture perth in the URL) outranked your Home Page for your chosen keyword - Google determined it was more relevant to the keyword search than your home page was.
If you would like a hand with any of the above points, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'd be happy to go over it with you and help you get moving in the right direction.
Cheers and best of luck!
Rob

Hi James
Thanks for your help. I only just changed the title and heading to be so exact, so I'm not sure if that is it Segals.com.au does excellent for "outdoor furniture perth" and I think they are over-optimized. What do you think? Thanks so much,
Whitney

Is ranking power mainly a matter of links?
Hey all. SEO noob here, trying to check my understanding. In competitive analysis, is ranking power at the domain level really all about DA? And is DA basically a count of unique inbound follow links, modulated by the authority of the referring source and spam scores? In other words, is ranking power basically a function of DA and PA? I realize on-page and technical factors can also play a role, but authority seems to be key. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

How Many Keywords & How Will They Take to Rank?
Hi Guys Just taken on a new site with around 80 keywords with no links because the site is new. Each page is optimised correctly, very user friendly with completely unique content for each and every page. I'm interested to know what would be your online marketing "plan" for such site to begin ranking. Thanks Gary

Should I link from my blog back to my product pages?
Hello... I just installed a blog on my Magento site. My question is whether or not i should be linking within posts on the blog back to the product or category pages that i am talking about...from an SEO perspective. If in my post i am talking about flashlights being important when preparing for a storm, should i link the word flashlights to the flashlight category on my site? I know I can do this, the question is should i, from google's perspective. A) should i link the word (flashlights) to that category on my page B) should i put a line at the bottom of every post that says something like "if you are interested in purchasing flashlights, visit this link" and hyperlink that whole sentence... THANKS!

Can I Boost Ranking Linking off Pages internallly?
My domain authority is relatively low, but my right now my homepage seems to have the highest rank. If I place a few internal page links on my homepage, would this boost ranking on internal pages? Or would it pull juice away from my homepage? Using the Seomoz OSE I see alot of my competitors using this type of strategy linking internally. Also would using breadcrumb links benefit me in anyway? Thanks very much!

Why have my rankings suddenly plummeted?
My site has been ranking well for the last couple of weeks on it's primary term "glee fansite" and now the rankings literally plummeted 5 days ago and now it is around 22 for "glee fansite" and many of it's other terms have just dropped out completely! Is it likely the rankings will come back if I keep on with my current strategy or will I need to start from scratch? Thanks! HMFwM.png?1 HMFwM.png?1

Blog Commenting Question Off Page
While blog commenting, many people tend to use their 'anchor text' when asked to provide with their name. Hyperlinking anchor text inside the blog comment is perfectly understandable for me but using anchor text when asked to provide your name is something that I see as spam and something that totally confuses a normal user who reads the blog comment and sees a weird name in the name section. Search engines too must be perfectly aware of this and thus I am of the opinion that such anchor texts don't care much weightage in the eyes of search engine. However many of my fellow SEO colleagues tend to differ. They say you should use anchor text when asked to provide with a name. And I am totally against this form of promotion That's why I wish to ask the opinion of experts in SEO MOZ on this topic. Awaiting your feedbacks

Strong pages and subpages: Building exact anchor again and again, or mix up?
Hi Seo Moz Team, I'm looking for some tips to optimize my site. The site is from mid 2009 and I'm targeting a bunch of keywords around a specific topic. One mainkeyword is a two phrase, let's say "keyword one". Since the beginning I built a lot of keyword anchor links with exact "keyword one" to my homepage. The key was climbing week to week until I reached number two on google. This place I could hold for round about 4 month. Until then it was going down to number 18 to number 14. The keyword "keyword one" was used most of all and it is the far most used key in the bunch of the other keywords. My first question is: I don't know what to do. I started building some brand links in order to mix the anchortext up. Should I built some new links to "keyword one" until I'm in the tops again although I have so much of them already? Could it be, that I have a keyword penalty one year now? In the meantime I worked with other keywords, deeplinks with total different keys and brand links. Smaller keys are ranking good and are very stable on positions 1-3. But especially this key is a little bid tricky. Other sites in the serps have roundabout 5-10 links regarding "keyword one" and they are ranking better than my site with 30-40 exakt anchor. My other idea was, that some links with anchor "keyword one" could be devalued. In this case it should be ok to build some new with exact anchor? The second keyword, lets say "key word two" is a three word combination. I have 60 good and editorial links on this special page and mixed up since I was optimizing for this key. Url mentions, exact anchor, variations and so on. With this key I'm on number 3. Number two is a very week site with no exact anchor backlink but a three word "keyword Domain". Regarding to this, my second question: There is no other site on my project, that is stronger than this three key combination page, but I can't reach to number 1-2 in google. The incoming links are very good regarding to all the other sites in the serps. Should I have patience? Building more and more links? I'm afraid that it is unnatural this way. For your information: There is one site in the serps from 2004. Everything this site does is to build lnks with "keyword one" and two other keywords. No variations, no brand. I think 85% of the time. This guy is ranking on positions 2-3 with this combinations since 3 years now, but smaller keys are week and foundable in comparison. Thanks in advance!
