Single 1 Star Rating on GMB
-
Hi all, We recently received a 1 star rating on GMB. It's just the rating, no review/comment with it. We don't recognise the name so we think it must have been made in error or is spam.
We discussed this internally, and it was decided that we should try to have it removed, although I personally didn't think our chances of getting it removed would be very good (because we wouldn't be able to prove it was spam). I flagged it as spam but didn't get a reply (would you even expect to get one?). I also sent GMB a DM on Twitter a couple of days ago, and again no reply.
Edit: Google have now replied as I tweeted them again and as expected they won't remove the rating as it doesn't violate their policies.
Normally, I wouldn't be so concerned about one individual poor rating (especially as it is just a rating), but we haven't had any reviews on Google before, so now our average is one star which just looks bad when someone googles our company. We use an external review provider for getting reviews from customers, so we don't actively encourage our customers to rate us on Google.
I was thinking we should reply to the rating, with a message saying something along the lines of "We can't find your name in our accounts, but if you get in touch with our customer service, we are confident they will be able to help you."
It would also help to get more ratings or reviews to even out the one bad one and improve our average.
Is there anything else we could do? How would you handle this? Thanks!

Thanks, that's a great tip! I've bookmarked that page, very handy to have that link. I'll bring it up with the team. I agree, it might be easiest for the sales team to share the link.
-
What generally works for us is we send an email with the direct link to the review box:
https://support.google.com/business/answer/7035772?hl=en-GBThe link takes them straight to the comment box, all they need to do is rate and write then press enter - we express that it only takes a minute to send a review but helps us out a lot, however, we find it easier if the sales team drop the link into an email after checking the product is received and installed!
Just a few tips from our experience with GMB reviews - hope it all goes well for you!
-
Thanks! I did respond to it (slightly different wording though), so we will see what happens.
I agree we should get some more reviews to improve our average but will have to see how we can encourage customers to rate us on Google as well as the other platform we use.

I think the best option is to respond to the rating, just to give the chance to change that 1* to 5* if it was a genuine rating. the response you have mentioned is straightforward enough, but I think you should definitely encourage other customers to review on GMB - just to even out the one star if your anonymous reviewer isn't willing to rectify the rating. In our case, it's definitely helped us stand out against our competitors on maps listings so maybe it can do the same for you?
I think the way you are handling it is fine - other than speaking to Google, I don't think there isn't really much else to do but try to rectify the issue with the customer (if genuine) and build ratings to receive 5* on GMB.

Star rating not showing up in local pack, and knowledge panel pulling in healthgrades
Hello, I have a client that when you Google just their business name a couple of odd things are happening. First off, they show up in the map pack, but it's now showing their review rating. They have 29 reviews, with an average star rating of 4.6, but at first glance, it doesn't look like they have any reviews:

Mind Boggling GMB Merge Issue
A bit complicated of a situation, and one I have never experienced before. Ill do my best to explain: To start: I operate 10+ GMB listings for a brand with multiple locations. The listings in question are our main brand account, representing our headquarters and largest location, and a smaller sub-brand that represents a unique portion of our business at the same physical location with its own staff, hours, entrance, etc. Both are completely legitimate and have been for years, despite sharing the same physical address (think of a retail store inside a resort). About 2 months ago i opened GMB and the system had automatically merged the 2 listings. They were flagged as duplicated due to the address issue. Ok, fine, no problem. After several chats and a call with GMB verifying they were unique businesses and confirming the issue they agreed to un-merge the listings. Once un-merged, we noticed a strange issue. The organic relevance in both maps and knowledge panel had been transferred from our main brand listing to the sub-brand. When querying anything that would trigger our maps listing or the knowledge panel the sub-brands account was now magically showing, including its landing page, phone number, etc. After countless chats / emails / calls with GMB i finally reached someone who understood the issue. This was escalated to GMBs technical team and they returned with the answer that they had never seen this before. Great. More importantly, they returned with the answer they could not correct the problem OR force the 2 listings back together. At this point, we were receiving a very large call volume to the sub-business that was meant for our main brand. After many back and forth's with Google's team, the recommended solution outside of deal with it, was to essentially change the information on the sub-brand to match the main brand page. The hope being the system would automatically merge them again. A bit crazy, but we didnt have much of a choice. That was 2 months ago. Our sub-brand page, now essentially hi-jacked to look like our main brand, receives close to 200k views a month. Our old main brand page still receives around 30 - 50k month. Clearly this is not ideal. Any recommendations on a solution? Happy to completely lose the sub-brand account, but its ranking and relevance has now become hugely important. My preference would be to merge the 2, but I am unsure if that will negatively impact the ranking. Our original brand account has thousands of reviews, is linked to our YouTube, etc. We would need to remove the sub-brand account that has now taken priority in search and request GMB merge it into the old account.

Client has 2 locations across the street from each other, 1 of them doesn't show up in Google Maps anymore unless you type its specific branch name. Help
Client has 3 locations in NYC... 1 is on the east side
Reviews and Ratings | | jaimeurteaga
2 of them are a block apart on the west side (52nd & 51st street). When you search the business name, you only see 2 of the 3 listings - 1 on the East side and 1 of the 2 on the West side. On the West side only the one with more reviews shows up. The semi-hidden location still exists. You can find it if you type in the exact full name of the branch (it has the brand name + Midtown West vs its neighbor a block away that's brand name + Hell's Kitchen). Otherwise, it's invisible. The Hell's Kitchen location that appears has 3000+ reviews. The hidden one (Midtown West) has only 250+ reviews. In the past, all 3 would show up. How do we get all 3 to show up again, at the initial, zoomed out view?0 -
Should Every GMB Page Have it's own email address?
Just spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Google. I created dozens of GMB pages for clients using my email address. Now I am discovering that this is not the right way of doing this. Each business owner should create a GMB account with her own email address. Then I can be added as a manager of that GMB account. Question:
Reviews and Ratings | | aj613
Now that I have dozens of GMB accounts under my email account, is it worth it to create a new email address for each client and associate it with the new email address? I think the best thing would be to have each client do it herself, but I'm not sure it's worth the headache of walking each one through it. What do you think?0 -
Aggregate Rating Markup for Local Restaurant
Hello Moz Community, I am finally getting around to creating markup for a bunch of the sites we work with using JSON-LD. I have a question specifically regarding adding review markup for a local restaurant. It's my understanding that putting the aggregate rating on the homepage never results in stars being shown in the SERP's. So what would be the best practice for taking advantage of all the great Google reviews we've accumulated over the years? These are reviews for the restaurant in general and not for any specific service or product. Should I create a reviews page on the site and use the markup there? Thanks for any and all suggestions.

How does decimal rounding of reviews to stars work in ios appstore? Starting from which average review score to get full 5 star rating?
How does decimal rounding of reviews to stars work in ios appstore?

Starting from which average review score to get full 5 star rating? Duolingo has a 5 star rating, but I doubt that they really have an all time review average larger than 4,75. In the google playstore their average of the android version is 4,6. Does anybody know how apple calculates the star ratings or has an URL reference where this is explained?0 -

Why ratings (no. of reviews & stars) still not showing in search results?
We implemented Schema and submitted the pages (with actual ratings and reviews) to Google Webmaster's Structured Data Markup tool a few weeks ago, but the ratings (stars and no. of reviews) are not showing yet. How long do I need to wait? TIA!
