Sudden Drop in Index Status on GSC
-
Hi all,
We've seen a sudden drop in index status on GSC from 19,000 to 12,000.
Rankings, referring domains, organic traffic etc. have not changed. However, we have implemented a huge number of redirects and done a site migration from http to https in the past year. Could this have an effect?
Thanks!

We have seen huge drops like that in the past. In our case, the new number seemed more accurate (what I would expect) - and I put it down to having implemented canonicals, pagination etc. which would have brought down the number of duplicate pages indexed.
If you haven't seen a drop in traffic I wouldn't be too worried.

Hi
19,000 seems like a lot of pages. I'd first ask yourself the question whether it is right to have so many pages in SERPS. Have you written or generated sufficiently engaging content and correct META for all of those pages?
Check the robots.txt file for any errors to see if you are excluding directories that you shouldn't be. For sure do a full site crawl to see if you need to canonicalise, no index or redirect any further pages that may be skinny, weak content (or special content e.g. catalog searches, account pages.).
1 page = 1 tight group of contextually similar keywords
I'd be more worries about organic visits that number of pages indexed. I seem to spend most of my life reducing page count !
Regards
Nigel

Hi,
It's possible that the site migration could have had an impact on the index. Did you notice the drop in the indexed pages immediately after the migration or just recently uncovered it? You can use Screaming Frog to perform a manual index to check on the total number of indexed pages and compare it to GSC to ensure it's accurate.
Alternatively, perform a 'Fetch as Google', followed by 'Index' to perform a manual index in GSC to check if there's any indexing issues.
Hope this helps!

Is there an easy way to switch hundreds of websites to https in GSC?
My company has hundreds of websites setup in Google Search Console but will soon be moving them all to secure domains. Is there an easy way to make the switch in GSC or do we have to change the address one by one?

An overnight substantial drop in visit duration while amount of sessions grew.
Hi, My Ave. session duration has dropped from 2:10 to 0:14 overnight. At the same time, amount of sessions from all channels grew on average of 56%. This increased (and I guess low quality) traffic is coming in from multiple regions, languages, devices and channels. I was not able to pin point it to 1 source, location, landing page etc. See enclosed screen shot. I would appreciate if anyone can shed some light on what's wrong and if there are any SEO implications. Thanks. pxWQX2E.png

Switch to www from non www preference negatively hit # pages indexed
I have a client whose site did not use the www preference but rather the non www form of the url. We were having trouble seeing some high quality inlinks and I wondered if the redirect to the non www site from the links was making it hard for us to track. After some reading, it seemed we should be using the www version for better SEO anyway so I made a change on Monday but had a major hit to the number of pages being indexed by Thursday. Freaking me out mildly. What are people's thoughts? I think I should roll back the www change asap - or am I jumping the gun?

Bounce rate consistently dropping
We started using SEO MOZ campaigns and crawl diagnostics for our site in November 2011. At that time, our bounce rate was 57.58%. From there, it has consistently dropped. Dec. 57% Jan. 24.86% Feb. 14.61% March 17.48 % April 12.35% We started out with 1,000's of errors showing up in the crawl diagnostics, down to under 50. could this be associated with the bounce rate drop?

Why is a section of our website dropping in&out of Google SERPs?
In July 2011 we started a news section that has it's own 'subfolder' /news/ (http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/, http://www.chorder.com/news/gear_deals/ etc.) The whole news section is dropping in&out of Google SERP's since late October, as show in attached graph. All news texts are real deal, written by our own staff, linked from homepage. Any idea why this happens and how to prevent it? cmqky.png

Will Bing/Google's engine index a page that has only been on social media?
Will Bing's engine index and rank a page that has only been seen on social media and has no inbound links? Will Google's? Are inbound links absolutely required to get a page indexed and ranking and getting traffic? If unknown, how would you go about testing this?
