HTTPS & Redirects
-
Hi
We're moving to https imminently & I wondered if anyone has advice on redirects.
Obviously we'll be redirecting all http versions to https - but should I be checking how many redirects are in each chain and amending accordingly?
If there's 4-5 in a chain, remove the middle unnecessary URLS ?
Advice please

Hi, We are on Magento and moving to https for all URLS soon as well. We have just had them on customer pages, checkout and admin but time to move on.
Interesting to read about those database redirects also. We have thousands in place over years as we've tidied up the catalogue and they get automatically created.A few years back I deleted them on a site upgrade and we seemed to take a knock in rankings... but it could have been the new site source code contributing to this also. Things have settled and we have good seo ... but ive concerns over changing to full https...eekkk.
What htaccess codes did you use to redirect all existing http urls to the https versions?
Was it just something like?RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

The https migration will have the same URLS but I'm trying to tidy up the redirects we currently have
So each time a title is updated on the site, a new redirect is added to the database but the others are not removed.
Shall I just delete from the database? I just want to make sure I'm not deleting those old URLs with authority in the chain
-
Delete those one that do not have content.
Keep in mind that https migration is intended to hace almost the same URLs, only changing http for https.
Cant imagine why having those extra URLs in the middle of the chain. Is there something that Im missing?
-
I think each time they get a redirect request they just update all the existing URLs in the file.
My question is which ones do I delete? I need to update the first URL & the last & remove the middle but from the file I can't determine which URL was first in the chain...
-
Try to convince your dev team that those redirects are not needed.
If those middle pages dont exist, why the redirect?I'd settle in max 2 hops, that is 2 redirects. This is just my maximum.
The best for google: 1 redirect.
Max tolerated by google: 4-5. -
Hi
Yes, I am just trying to work out how our dev team manage the redirects.
I'm not sure whether they actually go through a redirect chain.. this is an example of the data pulled from the redirect export:
-
sloping-top-for-ekwo-industrial-1-tier-lockers redirect > sloping-top-for-manutan-industrial-lockers
-
sloping-top-for-industrial-1-tier-lockers redirect > sloping-top-for-manutan-industrial-lockers
-
sloping-top-for-industrial-lockers redirect > sloping-top-for-manutan-industrial-lockers

Hello Becky!
If possible, lower down the number of redirects even though Google understands well up to 4-5 hops. Matt Cutts said it in these videos:
Can too many redirects from a single URL have a negative effect on crawling? Is there a limit to how many 301 (Permanent) redirects I can do on a site?Best Luck.
GR.

URL Parameters, Forms & SEO
Hi I have some pages on the site which have a quote form, in my site crawl I see these showing as duplicate content - my webmaster says this isn't the case, but I'm not sure. Landing page - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs Page with form - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs?quote-form - this also somehow has a canonical on it pointing to https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs?quote-form Which neither of us have added. I'm thinking we need to get the canonical needs to be updated to https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs Is it worth doing this for all these pages or am I worrying about nothing? Becky

Is AMP works on blogs only?
I have installed AMP Plugin in my WordPress website but when I check pages with /amp/ it shows 404 error. But for blog pages, for the example www.website.com/blog/post/amp/ it shows amp version of the particular page. Also, nothing is showing in search console Accelerate Moile pages.

When do you use article markup for AMP pages?
Hi all! For a healthcare website we have setup AMP. Google Search Console suggests to use article markup for several pages and I am not sure if this is correct. There are two kind of pages:

1. News pages
2. Information pages, for example: symptoms alcohol addiction or Binge Eating Disorder There's no doubt the article markup will be correct for the news pages but I am not sure about the information pages. Do you guys suggest to implement article markup on these pages as well or only use this for real news/blog posts? Hope you can help me out. Thank you in advance and happy holidays! Domain Redirect and SSL Cert
Hi, When redirecting an entire site to another domain, do you have to maintain the SSL certificate? The SSL expires 3 days before the planned redirect. Thanks in advance.

Upper to Lower Case and Endless Redirects
I have a site that first got indexed about a year ago for several months. I shut it down and opened it up again about 5 months ago. 2 months ago I discovered that the upper case in the pages: www.site.com/some-detail/Bizname/product was a no-no. There are no backlinks to these pages yet, so for search engines I put in 301 redirects to the lower case version thinking after a few weeks Bing and Google would figure it out and no longer try to crawl them. FYI there are thousands of these pages, and they are dynamically created. Well, 2 months later google is still crawling the upper case urls even though it appears that only the lower case are in the index (from when I do a site:www.site.com/some-detail ) search. Bing is also crawling the upper case although I'm not seeing any of the upper case pages and only a small percentage of the lower case ones show using a site:www.site.com/details.... command Assuming there are no backlinks will they eventually stop crawling those uppercase pages? If not, again assuming there are no backlinks, should I 410 the upper case pages, or will that remove any credit I am getting for the page having existed for over a year prior to changing the upper to lower?

Does a 302 redirect pass penalties?
I'm having problems finding a definitive answer to this question, there is a lot of rumour and gossip out there but nothing I can rely on. I'm working with a site that received an unnatural links notice followed by a massive drop in search traffic. Looking at the link profile it's pretty much jacked beyond repair and I have recommended that we move over to a fresh domain. However, it's an established brand with many more sources of traffic than organic search. There's no way we can burn all their repeat visits, loyal customers, brand recognition that they've built up over the years so I want to redirect from the old domain to the new. This is not to try and make any SEO gain from the previous site, frankly we don't give a crap about that. We just want to maintain the brand. A 302 is a temporary redirect, this will be a permanent move BUT a 301 will pass on the penalty. So can we safely use a 302 redirect in this situation or is there a better alternative (meta refresh?) Thanks for your help! MB.

How to decide on which site to 301 redirect
Hi there I'd like your opinions please! My client currently has their website at not-very-good-url.it which has a really good link profile they also have duplicate sites at: much-better-brand-name-url.it and much-better-brand-name-url.com but both these other sites have only a handful of links in. How important do you think a better brand url is? And therefore do you think it would be better to 301 to a better brand URL and take the risk that the link profile will get hit? Or leave the main site where it is and 301 the other two to it? Many thanks

301 Redirect shenanigans.
So our website (www.FrontlineMobility.com) Has a canonical link redirect to the non www. version. However when I put in website.com it comes up with a small list of links and says this site links to www.website.com. So I'm curious if I used to wrong canonical linking method( that is the method I tried and I placed it in the Head Tags.) I greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter ^.^
