What happens when we canonical and point to a page which has been redirected to another page? Google response!
-
Hi all,
I would like to know the different scenarios Google going to respond when we use canonical and redirect for duplicate pages.
Let's say A to B are duplicate pages with 95% same content and C Doesn't have same content but context wise similar and priority page we expect to rank for.
-
What happens if we canonical from A to B and set redirect from B to C?
-
What if both A and B are pointed to C with canonical?
-
What if A or B deleted and other one is canonical to C?
Note: We can noindex or 301 redirect as they have their own visitors. This is more about showing most relevant content to the audience and avoid duplicate content in search results.
Thanks

**What happens if we canonical from A to B and set redirect from B to C? **
Keep in mind that rel=canonical is optionally obeyed by Google and some people would say that it is recognized by Google by chance. So, when you place that on a webpage Google might honor it or they might not. How they honor it today might be different from how they honor it tomorrow --- and Google often changes their mind about such things without telling anybody. And, so far, they are not telling anybody EXACTLY how they treat 301 redirects and because of that, in my opinion, anyone outside of Google who gives firm answers to how rel=canonicals work knows not that he knows not.
If you want these pages associated with one another then you should use 301 redirects and not canonicals. 301 redirects are on your server and they force visitors and Google crawlers to your intended page. Still, Google might not give full credit for them (but they say that they currently do), however, if you want to pass value from one page to another, a 301 redirect is the most assured way to make that happen, in my opinion.
I think that your **What happens if we canonical from A to B and set redirect from B to C? ** is looking for a far reaching answer. Nobody can tell you with assurance what is really gonna happen. And, again, what happens can be changed by Google at whim and without no notice.

Google search console: 404 and soft 404 without any back-links. Redirect needed?
Hi Moz community, We can see the 404 and soft 404 errors in Google web masters. Usually these are non-existing pages which are found somewhere on internet by Google. I can see some of these reported URLs don't have any back-links (checked on ahrefs tool). Do we need to redirect each and every link reported here or ignore or marked to be fixed? Thanks

Why Google changed our page-title suddenly which has been same for years
Hi all, I know Google shows a different page titles. Happens when over optimised or when we copied competitors page title. But we did neither. Suddenly Google changed our homepage page title in search results. Our page title suffix "brand name" has been moved to beginning. Our page title is still for years.

Landing page redirect along with complete content
Hi Moz community, We have a page with "keyword" we are targeting in slug like website.com/keyword/. This page doesn't have much back-links or visits like homepage. So we decided to redirect homepage to /keyword page along with complete content. Will this going to hurt? Only change anybody can notice is URL. Are there any risks involved. I think this is the best way to highlight the page we been thinking about. Thanks

301 from one domain to another. Possible?
Hi all, I'm looking to re-direct one domain to another so that the content can be edited more easily under one CMS. Is this possible or will search engines penalise you for such a move? Not overly worried about losing link juice by implementing a 301 because the website we're hoping to re-direct from is a new page. Cheers

Rel canonical
Hi, Since we sorted all duplication issues using the rel canonical tag in the home page, and redirects in the htaccess file, our Moz Ranking has dropped markedly (possibly because there are now less apparent links on our site. At the same time our rankings and traffic from Google have dropped markedly. I notice that none of our top ranking competitors are using the rel canonical tag in the source on their home pages. We have just performed the same seo strategy on another unrelated site with the same immediate drop in MOZ ranking.

Will google punish us for using formulaic keyword-rich content on different pages on our site?
We have 100 to 150 words of SEO text per page on www.storitz.com. Our challenge is that we are a storage property aggregator with hundreds of metros. We have to distinguish each city with relevant and umique text. If we use a modular approach where we mix and match pre-written (by us) content, demographic and location oriented text in an attempt to create relevant and unique text for multiple (hundreds) of pages on our site, will we be devalued by Google?
