Website not ranking for noncompetitive terms
-
Hi,
We've took over a website last July and no matter what we do we just can't get it ranking in Google, even for noncompetitive terms.
here is the website in question:
http://www.alignandsmile.co.uk
Ideally the client would like to rank for Canary Wharf but that location is competitive, the site doesn't even rank for 'Dentist New Providence Wharf E14' despite it being included in the title tag on the home page and in the content throughout the website.
Directories with Align and Smile's business information do rank however. I opened a case with google through Webmaster tools and they 'reviewed your site and found no manual actions by the webspam team that might affect your site's ranking in Google.'
So I'm a bit stuck. The site ranks top for the keyphrase in Bing and Yahoo...we are really struggling with Google!
Any help would be much appreciated.
many thanks
Marcus

Thanks for you help with this Marcus - I'll certainly address the content and have a look at the link profile and remove any dodgy links and hopefully that will help!

Hey Marcus
Marcus here!
Well, the site looks okay but it is behaving as if it has a search penalty. There is something I have been discussing with a few folks working on penalised sites and generally, if you search for a block of text from a penalised page with double quotes it returns the page, without the quotes, nowhere to be found.
"You will only pay for the private treatment you need and want" - returns the page
You will only pay for the private treatment you need and want - nowhere to be found
Now, this is hardly science but it is something that I have seen replicated across many penalised sites and it also seems specific to a given page that has an algorithmic penalty meaning that if we try the same thing on a non penalised page then it returns as a result as we would expect.
There are two big obvious algorithmic penalties broadly relating to on page and off page problems and it seems you may have a dose of both of them.
Penguin - Check your backlinks, they are very anchor text heavy and highly unlikely to be natural, editorial votes.
Panda - Your content seems to be duplicated across several other sites.
I would imagine several things have happened.
- Site was built by a company that makes dentist sites and it uses generic content across all sites
- Link building was done to improve on the poor ranks and that has just made things worse
In a nutshell you need to do the below:
- review all the content and make it unique and informative (feed it through copyscape when this is done)
- clean up the nasty link profile (look at rmoov, link detox and removeem)
- ideally generate a small amount of high quality links
This is algorithmic, so it is better than a manual penalty so you just need to ensure you get the site all fully compliant with the google guidelines.

Ranking Drop
hey guys, I know there is always someone here asking this questions, but I have done my fair share of investigation and have not come up with a cause. my ranking dropped from page one to page 2 or 3 last sunday in time span of 4 hours. After that I read that google was updating panda with 4.1, but don't know why I got hit exactly. my competition is all clear and some have even gained rankings, and mine dropped even though my domain and page authority increased as well. any ideas would help. I already checked all the obvious ones (such as spam, links, content, etc)

Eligible To Rank For Few Queries
I can't figure out why this site (www.liveathomeseniors.com) is eligible for so few search queries on Google Webmaster Tools. I know there is a lot of work to be done, but this is my biggest puzzle right now. What am I not seeing? 379 pages are indexed and yet the site is has only been deemed eligible to rank for 3 queries over the past 3 months. Is it all the repetition in the way the content has been structured? I'd appreciate people's thoughts on this. I can't see the forest for the trees. Donna

Ranking dropped after domain change
Dear Moz Community, first of all excuse my bad english, i am from europe and my english is not the best 😉

I use Moz Analytics for several days and try to figure out why our "main keyword" totally dropped after our domain change. We started this year with a new company name and a new domain. Our old domain was dp-hochzeitsfotograf.de and the main keyword we try to rank for was "hochzeitsfotograf" which means "wedding photographer" here in Germany. Last summer we reached position 1 and short before our domain change we still ranked on position 6. We register the domain change in google webmaster tools and redirect all urls via 301 redirect to the new domain. Our new domain name is yourheyday.de and all rankings adopted pretty good except our main keyword (now position 62) which could break our neck the next few month. I would be so so happy and really appreciate if anyone of you have an advise for us. Thanks and many greetings from europe

New website, to www or not
I was just wondering if there are any advantages to using the www instead of just the domain name for seo. Can these be elaborated on?

Viral page not ranking onGoogle
A user generated talk thread on our social networking site went viral yesterday and generated around 36000 extra visits. But, when we Google the key phrase in this thread our site is not even in the Top 50. Instead the pages are dominated by other (lesser) websites referring to the content and linking to the thread The page is indexed The on page SEO grade for the key phrase and variant according to SEOMoz is A Our home page has a PR of 7 and an SEO Domain Authority of 76 We are the original source of this content Other talk threads on different subjects in a similar category are ranking on page 1 of Google. What's happening?

What is the best website structure for SEO?
I've been on SEOmoz for about 1 month now and everyone says that depending on the type of business you should build up your website structure for SEO as 1st step. I have a new client click here ( www version doesn't work)... some bugs we are fixing it now. We are almost finished with the design & layout. 2nd question have been running though my head. 1. What would the best url category for the shop be /products/ - current url cat ex: /products/door-handles.html 2. What would you use for the main menu as section for getting the most out of SEO. Personally i am thinking of making 2-3 main categories on the left a section where i can add content to it (3-4 paragraphs... images maybe a video). So the main page focuses on the domain name more and the rest of the sections would focus on specific keywords, this why I avoid cannibalization. Main keyword target is "door handles" Any suggestions would be appreciated.
