301 Re-direct help
-
Hello Mozzers,
I have a technical question that perhaps someone has experience with and can help with.
I currently have 2 e-commerce websites:
SITE-A.COM (original site) & SITE-B.COM (new site)
SITE-B.COM is the newer site that has a lot of new products and new features and great content and is very user friendly.
We are thinking about funneling all of our visitors and traffic to SITE-B.com since it is the better experience for the users ...
the question is this:
If we want to 301 redirect all traffic from Site-A.com to Site-B.com ... where do we initiate those redirect requests? Would it be on the server for Site-A.com? If so, would i have to keep that server up and running forever if i don't want to lose the re-directs? Also, how do i do this properly without violating Google's guidelines?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Not sure if this is the way it should exactly be handled, but here are some thoughts for consideration:
1. I'd consider pointing IP address of domain-A to IP address of domain-B, then set up a general 301 domain redirect for domain-A -> domain-B and then do 301 redirects per URL from domain-A to domain-B as applicable/relevant. The redirects would be setup to be managed on domain-b, as domain-a would be pointing to domain-b's server.
2. Since you're effectively "changing site address" here, so you'd want to ensure you have both sites and all versions setup in GSC (domain-a.com, www.domain-a.com, https://domain-a.com, https://www.domain-a.com domain-b.com, www.domain-b.com, etc., etc.) and then initiate a change of address for domain-a.com to go to domain-b.com.
Cheers

Actually, just for clarification:
Both domain names are registered at GoDaddy
Both domain-A & domain-B are hosted at Nexcess (on separate servers)
You wrote: “Now change the nameservers for DomainA from Server 1 > Server 2.”
Do you mean by that… to point both Domain names to the same name server that Domain-B is on?
Thanks again

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation.
I will check this out and get back to you with any questions or to report how this worked.
Thanks again - Happy Holidays!

Hi
From my understanding of above, SiteA and SiteB are setup on separate servers and I appreciate you won't want to be running two servers for the sake of keeping redirects alive. Firstly, I would recommend making sure you have a full and up to date backup of the sites.
Server 1:
Setup 301 redirects for everything from DomainA > DomainBServer 2:
Create the Addon Domain entry for DomainA to point to DomainB
Setup 301 redirects for everything from DomainA > DomainBNow change the nameservers for DomainA from Server 1 > Server 2.
- At this stage, you may experience some downtime whilst the domain propagates but because everything is setup and ready, any downtime should be minimal.
Once the domain has fully propagated, verify in Server 1 stats that the server is no longer receiving requests for that Domain to serve data and that all requests are being served from Server 2. <--- On confirmation of this, you can then go ahead and delete all data from Server 1 and shut it down.
Now everything is being served from Server 2. Monitor for any new 404 errors that may occur, in case you missed out redirecting any content and get these fixed with redirects as soon as possible.
Providing the structure of the URLs is the same, you shouldn't really encounter any 404 errors and from this point on, the 301 redirects only serve the purpose of maintaining any link juice from backlinks and ensuring your customers who are finding your site through referral links are landing on the correct pages. - If a user visits your site by entering the domain directly, the server will automatically direct them from DomainA to DomainB and from that point on, clicking any links within the site should keep the user on DomainB without having to perform redirects.
Then head over to Google Console and in the configuration tab for your site, there will be an option to notify Google about the "Change of Address" - complete this section.
Finally, to avoid any confusion from your customers I would recommend releasing a notice of some kind to inform your visitors that you have migrated to the new site.
I hope this information is helpful to you and of course if you have any questions at all, feel free to get in touch.
I hope you have a Great Christmas & a Happy New Year.
Best Regards
Ajaz

301 Redirects from Subdomain to Location Pages
I have a client site that is getting redesigned. Its a multi location service provider. Currently (for whatever reason) the location pages are sub domains. https://<location-name>.site.com/ In the new design the locations will be on the main domain. https://site.com/locations/<location-name> We are considering using 301 redirects from the current sub domains to the new location pages on the main domain. The current sub domains are setup on a multi-site with A records for each one in our GoDaddy account. Would like to get feedback on any unforeseen SEO issues that anyone might have input on.

.aspx 301 redirects on Business Catalyst
Hi I am have moved my website from .aspx to business catalyst. I have found out (when the site already migrated!) that Business Catalyst does not support .aspx 301 redirects. On a previous post from 2012 (https://moz.com/community/q/aspx-files-will-simply-not-work-as-redirects) , someone has recommended a java script re direct. I have tried this but google search console is classing this as a 404 resulting in no link juice and my website dropping pages on google. I have tried to do 301 redirects at my server level but wont work. Anyone know a solution? Thanks in advance Keith

Help Crawl friendliness for large site
After watching Rand's video I am trying to think of the best way to make my large site more crawl friendly. Background I have a large site with over 100k product skus and so when you get to a particular page of products there are tons of different refinements and options that help you sort the products. Most of these are noindex followed, but I was wondering if I should be nofollowing the internal links as well in order to keep bots out of those pages and going to the pages that I want them to go too. Is this a good way to handle it? Also, does anyone have good recommendations of links to posts that deal with helping the crawl friendliness of a large site? Thanks!

Best Place to Redirect 301 to?
Hey Everyone! I have an old site with hundreds of blog posts that are very spammy (duplicate content, keyword stuffed, and just plain bad content). I am going to redirect them and delete them from WordPress but I'm wondering where is the best place to redirect them to? Home page, other posts, other pages...? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

301 redirect from Blogger
Hello, I have a client with a Wordpress network of blogs, each blog is owned by a different blogger. Many of them were migrated time ago from Blogger. I have seen that the way used to redirect them is a meta refresh, so no authority is being passed. I cannot find any reliable way of making a 301 from Blogger, There are some plugins, but I'm afraid of using them. Any of you have experience with this situation please? I have even thought about placing a global rel canonical before the meta refresh, but I think that here the problem is the meta refresh itself.... Thank you in advance

404 vs 301
My company is planning on discontinuing one of the product lines we currently offer. In terms of SEO, would it be better to implement a 301 redirect to a generic page page (such as the homepage or main product page), or to create a custom 404 page explaining that the product line with links to other pages (according to the most next viewed pages in Google Analytics). Thanks!

301 Single Page Redirects in IIS7?
Hey all -- I am working with a client, getting ready to make a full domain level change to a brand new domain. The existing domain has solid domain importance and trust, and the home page has a 5/10 GPR, so the transfer of all existing link juice is very important. Of course, I will be utilizing 301's to permanently redirect all existing pages to their new permanent homes. It will be a 1-1 structure, which I know is also best when possible. My question comes in specific to IIS. There is a wealth of information out there on the net regarding implementing permanent 301's using Apache and .htaccess, but nada when it comes to doing it in IIS7, which is what the client is using. For instance, today I am seeking to help them redirect 2 single pages to new destinations within the same domain, just diffferent folders. When you open up the IIS7 Control Panel (yes, with full Admin access), you can navigate to the directory, but the individual pages that I am looking to redirect with 301's do not show in IIS7, so you can't just right click on each page and choose "A redirection to a URL," etc. Any help on exactly how to redirect a single page using a permanent 301 in IIS 7 would be huge! Thanks guys!

If I 301 re-direct a piece of content (A) to another piece of content (B) and B is unrelated in subject matter to A, will the referring search keywords to content piece A hold for content piece B?
For example, I have a piece of content about furniture and it ranks in top 5 in the SERPs for the phrase "furniture". If I were to 301 redirect that piece of furniture content to a piece of content about trucks, would the referring keyword "furniture" continue to rank over time for the trucks content? My instincts tell me that in the short term the content piece about trucks would receive traffic for the term "furniture", but over the long term, the trucks content would lose rankings for the term "furniture" since the piece has to do with trucks and not furniture. Any thoughts?
