Image Alt and Title?
-
I'm building a quotations website. Each quotation will have between 1 and 5 images (picture quotes) associated with it. The images will be featured as thumbnails (image gallery) on the quote post itself.
How should I handle the image alt and title tags so that I rank better for a quote in image search, and also strengthen the ranking signals on the quote post itself?
Take for example, a photo of a beach and a photo of the sun. Both have the same quote on it: "Laughter is an instant vacation." Should the quote itself go into the alt tag? while the description of the image goes into the title? Or should the quote go into the title? Would this be correct?
Title: Beach with children playing in the sand.
Alt: "Laughter is an instant vacation."
Title: Sun shining in the sky.
Alt: "Laughter is an instant vacation."
What about if the quote is very long? Google has said they like when the alt and title tags are short.

My bad. I thought since you said it was a full-time job for you that money was somehow involved.

Jim,
A few notes:
1. This a simple quotations website. Not an e-commerce site in any way.
2. I do not have 15 or more employees.
3. I don't own a billion-dollar company.
4. I will have functional alt tags, whether or not someone thinks they're perfect or not.
What does all of this mean?
A) I wouldn't be worth anyone's time in court.
B) Even if a case was presented, a judge would laugh hysterically... because there is no case.
I can guarantee you I will never... ever, be sued for not having the correct alt tags on my images.

I hate to push back on this, but making a site accessible for the disabled is not considered "volunteer work" ... it's the law. The Americans With Disabilities Act requires businesses who make their services available to the public to make "reasonable accommodations" so that disabled members of the community can access their services. Those requirements apply to websites.
And if you think you can just ignore them, wait until someone sues you for an ADA violation (or several). Like it or not, if you're selling to the public, then you are a "public accommodation" and bound by the law. Consider it part of what you have to do to run a public business.
Here's a resource about ADA accessibility requirements and websites:

Jim,
The problem with that is Google has said it doesn't like long alt text. And we're only using a simple 5 word quote for this example. Imagine a quote that's 30 words, or longer... in addition to the description of the image itself.
And while I'm all for the visually impaired person getting a better user experience, I'm more concerned about my website being successful. This is a full-time job for me, not volunteer work.

I think you are so focused on SEO that you're losing the purpose of what the ALT tag is for. The ALT tag is to operate as a "stand-in" for the actual image. This is part of making your site friendly for people with disabilities, such as vision impairment. Someone comes to your website, and they can't "see" the image, they mouse over the image and the screen reader reads the text to them. What is going to be more useful to them?
ALT="A picture of sun shining in the sky and a quote: 'Laughter is an instant vacation.'"
OR
ALT="Laughter is an instant vacation"
Which does the best job telling the visually impaired person what is appearing on the screen?

One more possibility is to take an excerpt of the quote, maybe the first 10 words or so.
Title: Quote from Milton Berle
Alt: "I have never in my life learned anything from any..."
But that would still leave me with duplicate title tags across multiple images.
-
Another option would be to just add "Quote from Albert Einstein" in the alt tag, and then a description of the image itself in the title. For example:
Title: Beach with children playing in the sand.
Alt: Quote from Milton Berle
The only problem I see here is that first, the quote itself isn't included anywhere in the image, so if someone is searching for that quote on image search, it's not going to show up. Additionally, there could potentially be dozens of images on my site (and on the same page) with the same exact alt tag.

Title Tags not Displaying in SERPs Correctly
We have two websites that are very similar. One is .co.nz and the other is a .com.au. I've noticed some of our page titles are displaying differently in SERPs even though the title tags are formatted the same:e.g. The title: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape Australia" shows as: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape Australia - MightyApe.com.au"It's showing with extra text "- MightyApe.com.au". Whereas the NZ result for the title "PC Games | at Mighty Ape NZ" is fine i.e. displays as: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape NZ"Does anyone who why this might be happening?P.S. It's odd that in the Australian results the site links don't show up even though the sites are structured the same.

Alt and title tags on images
For SEO, are alt and title tags still worth the effort? Or have they gone the way of meta keywords? I can see having alt tags for visually impaired reasons, but at this point is there any SEO reason to use them?

Page Titles For Local - Help on URL Structure
Trying to figure out the best way to construct localized urls for the dental website. For example, If I have the URL:
On-Page Optimization | | Czubmeister
http://www.kooskidental.com/services/cosmetic-dentistry/
and If I want to make it local to the city I would use: http://www.kooskidental.com/services/richardson-tx-cosmetic-dentistry/ But what happens is that I have other options off the menu like: http://www.koooskidental.com/services/richardson-tx-cosmetic-dentistry/teeth-whitening/ But if I am trying to rank for richardson tx teeth whitening, I would have to do http://www.koooskidental.com/services/richardson-tx-cosmetic-dentistry/richardson-tx-teeth-whitening/ But that's pretty long and ugly and I don't think I need richardson-tx in their twice. If I am trying to rank for richardson tx cosmetic dentistry and richardson tx teeth whitening, what would be the best structure for the url's?0 -
Strange titles showing in WMT?
On one of my wordpress sites, I have just checked it out in Google Webmaster tools and under duplicate titles it is showing spam titles which I did not add? Lamisil Buy - Buy Online on two pages of the site However these two pages are no longer online? So I have 2 quick questions please 1.) How did they add a title to these 2 pages 2.) Why is it still showing in WMT when these pages are no longer live? Also under duplicate titles it is showing pages that dont exist? i.e. ?yonidza=orde and some of which such as weddings.html are pages from the old site structure that no longer exist - how can I reduce these errors down?

Will changing the title of previous topics affect google results?
Hi all, just had a quick question about google results. I help run a sports forum and currently all our topics as seen as "Forum Name • Topic Title". I think that links to topics would appear much more user friendly if I switched the naming to "Topic Title • Forum Name". My question is, would this change affect previous links in any negative way or will google simply update past topics with the new naming convention? Thank in advance.

Potential Duplicate Title Tags On Sibling Pages
Edit I'll take the fall on this one, seems I could have asked my quesiton in a more clear manner. I was cruising other questions and finding a whole of answers that I suspect were not truly intended to help, but maybe help and earn Mozpoints. Wasn't fair of me to label those answering here with that. I will work better on the wording of my questions! 🙂 Edit Either I am asking my question poorly or I am learning there may be a rush to get points by throwing up any old answer...it very well may be the former which I am open to feedback on. Each page is to stand alone and hopefully rank well for the neighbourhood name and in conjunction with another relevant keyword phrase. There is no 'duplicate' version of any pages. * On a site there are numerous pages that provide real estate listings broken down by neighbourhood. Each containing similar content, a abbreviated version of the listings, often spanning 2 or 3 pages. These are 3rd level pages. Properties->Calgary Neighbourhoods->Evanston The title tags created are: Evanston Homes For Sale - NW Calgary Real Estate Panorama Hills Home For Sale - NW Calgary Real Estate Etc. for about 15 or so pages. Then they start again for another area of the city: Sagewood Homes For Sale - Airdrie Real Estate Woodside Homes For Sale - Airdrie Real Estate At this point there is no text on the actual page outside of the listings...an example of similar listings on another site - http://www.experiencerealtygroup.com/BaturynandDunluceHomes.ubr Do you think the SE's will see these as 'proper' use of the Title Tag or duplicate or other practices they tend to frown upon? It is a logical way of creating the title and obviously creating a unique version for each page would not only be tough to scale on some sites with 100's of these pages, they would become a little silly and not much use to the searcher in the SERPs Thanks for any help!
