Mysterious ave pageload time spikes since major redesign
-
Hello Moz Community,
About six months ago, we completely redesigned our heavily trafficked website. We updated the navigation, made the site responsive, and refreshed all the site's content. We were hoping to get a rankings boost from all the hard work we put in, but sadly our traffic began to steadily decline. We started to notice that although overall page load speeds were comparable before and after the redesign if you compared them on an hourly basis, we saw random hourly spikes in ave page load speed post redesign.
Here is a pic of our analytics comparing our hourly ave. page load speeds pre vs. post redesign: https://screencast.com/t/8WQeyhquHN (after is in blue, before in orange)
We have spent around 3 months trying to figure out the underlying cause of the new load time spikes. My question is has anyone seen anything like this before? Does anyone have any suggestions what might be causing the spikes? As far as we can tell, the spikes are indeed random and are not correlated to any particular time of day, our traffic, or other activity we are doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Eric

Quick thing to check - have a look at your server logs. Those kinds of random load time increases look typical of the load spikes that are typical of bot overloads - where spambots may be hitting your pages in bursts, causing the server to overload and slow (or even reset, as Vijay mentions).
Those bot hits aren't recorded in GA - you'll have to look at the actual server access logs to find them.
Hope that helps?

Hi Eric,
Thanks for your response, please do update about the final solution for the benefit of all.

We have not detected anything wrong with our site from a user perspective-- that is what is so frustrating. Thanks for your time and response!

Thank you Vijay, I am having our developer take a look at all of our scripts.

Your page seems to load fine, have you personally seen the website load horribly at the times the chart and analytics indicates that it is? I don't think there is anything wrong with your site, so if the chart is actually accurate then it can only be the web host is dropping the ball

Hi Eric,
We had faced a similar problem with one of our clients, in the end, it was some scripts (both front-end and back-end) which were not ending/terminating properly and overloading the server. The script overload meant the server responses became slow till the resources were exhausted and reset by server mechanism. To summarize, it might be attributed to some bad scripting code.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Vijay

Target load time on ecommerce websites in 2017
I have a client that is redeveloping their website in Magento and is interested to know what their target page load time should be. I've read some stuff on this that's over a year old and curious if anyone has a census on what the averages are or what we should aim for. I know the simple answer is "as fast as it can be", but wondering if anyone has additional insight. Thanks!

Can ht access file affect page load times
We have a large and old site. As we've transition from one CMS to another, there's been a need for create 301 redirects using our ht access file. I'm not a technical SEO person, but concerned that the size of our ht access file might be contributing source for long page download times. Can large ht access files cause slow page load times? Or is the coding of the 301 redirect a cause for slow page downloads? Thanks

Should I Remove Thousands of Bad Links over a Short Time or Long Time?
Hey Moz Community! I've got a website that has hundreds of thousands of old links that don't really offer any great content. They need to be removed. Would it be a better idea to remove them in batches of 5000,10000, or more over a long time... or remove them all at the same time because it doesn't matter? Cheers, Alex

Is the If-Modified-Since HTTP Header still relevant?
I'm relatively new to the technical side of SEO and have been trying to brush up my skills by going through Google's online Web-master Academy, which suggests that you need a If-Modified-Since HTTP Header tag on your site. I checked and apparently our web server doesn't support this. I've been told by a good colleague that the If-Modified-Since tag is no longer relevant as the spiders will frequently revisit a site as long as you regularly update and refresh the content (which we do). However our site doesn't seem to of been reindexed for a while as the cached version's are still showing the pages from over a month ago. So two question really - is the If-Modified-Since HTTP Header still relevant and should I make sure this is included? And is there anything else I should be doing to make sure the spiders crawl our pages? (apart from keeping them nice, fresh and useful)

Problems with my Site? (If you have time take a look :P thanks)
Hey! If anyone has a moment I would really appreciate any tips or problems you see about our website. I don't expect much but would appreciate any suggestions and such. We are working on back linking and content generation but I know that may not be much use if the website itself is not built well enough! Thank you to anyone who takes a moment of their time to take a look! Site: http://earthsaverequipment.com I am more interested in SEO issues or suggestions not comments that you dislike my artwork 😛 haha Cheers Charles

Penalities in a brand new site, Sandbox Time or rather a problem of the site?
Hi guys, 4 weeks ago we launched a site www.adsl-test.it. We just make some article marketing and developed a lots of functionalities to test and share the result of the speed tests runned throug the site. We have been for weeks in 9th google serp page then suddendly for a day (the 29 of february) in the second page next day the website home is disappeared even to brand search like adsl-test. The actual situalion is: it looks like we are not banned (site:www.adsl-test.it is still listed) GWT doesn't show any suggestion and everything looks good for it we are quite high on bing.it and yahoo.it (4th place in the first page) for adsl test search Anybody could help us to understand? Another think that I thought is that we create a single ID for each test that we are running and these test are indexed by google Ex: <cite>www.adsl-test.it/speedtest/w08ZMPKl3R or</cite> <cite>www.adsl-test.it/speedtest/P87t7Z7cd9</cite> Actually the content of these urls are quite different (because the speed measured is different) but, being a badge the other contents in the page are pretty the same. Could be a possible reason? I mean google just think we are creating duplicate content also if they are not effectively duplicated content but just the result of a speed test?

Will 301 redirecting a site multiple times still preserve the original site value?
Hi, All! If site www.abc.com was already 301 redirected to site www.def.com, and now the site owner wants to redirect www.def.com to www.ghi.com - is there any concern that it's not going to work, and some of the original linkjuice, rank, trust, etc. is going to vanish? Or as long as the 301s are set up right, should you be able to 301 indefinitely? Does anyone have any experience with actually doing this and seeing good/bad/neutral results? Thanks in advance! -Aviva B
