Duplicate Content - Deleting Pages

The Penguin update in April 2012 caused my website to lose about 70% of its traffic overnight and as a consequence, the same in volume of sales. Almost a year later I am stil trying to figure out what the problem is with my site.
As with many ecommerce sites a large number of the product pages are quite similar. My first crawl with SEOMOZ identified a large number of pages that are very similar - the majority of these are in a category that doesn't sell well anyway and so to help with the problem I am thinking of removing one of my categories (about 1000 products).
My question is - would removing all these links boost the overall SEO of the site since I am removing a large chunk of near-duplicate links? Also - if I do remove all these links would I have to put in place a 301 redirect for every single page and if so, what's the quickest way of doing this.

Thanks for your reply Ryan. I am going to war on the bad links and have got over half of them removed already. There are one or two quite shocking examples of the manipulative linking you describe, and when I dug deeper into those sites I was utterly appalled.

It is important to understand the difference between Penguin and Panda.
Penguin focuses solely on a single issue: manipulative links to your site. By far the most effective solution is to remove the bad links. Penguin does not care about whether your content is duplicated or any other aspect of your site's quality.
Panda is a different update which focuses on content quality. While it is possible your site has multiple issues, you have diagnosed your issue as Penguin and stated you experienced a major traffic drop in April 2012. If that drop was on or immediately after April 24th, and you have built manipulative links to the site, it is highly likely the issue is Penguin.
A quick review of your site's backlinks in Open Site Explorer shows a large number of links which Penguin is designed to penalize....directory links and other low quality links.

Horrible ranking for hundreds of content pages
We have hundreds of pages of restaurant reviews (each is 100% original content) on our site (for example, here is a list of many of the content pages: https://www.rewards21.com/articles). The PA of almost every page is 1 (ouch). Doing even the most long-tail Google search doesn't bring up one of those pages (even if I include our company name in the search string). I'm certain we have lots of room to improve SEO, but not even seeing the pages come up for even the most long-tail search has me concerned... Our site used to be on Wordpress many months ago and many of these pages ranked fine..ever since switching away from Wordpress, we've not made any SEO progress. Duplicate content affects on overall rankings
Hi guys, I have a website that has 23 pages with duplicate content. These pages serve the same function, which enables customers to upload their images. There is not much content on each one but we require a different page for each of our products, here is an example page: http://www.point101.com/giclee_printing/upload#/upload I don't think it makes sense to use a canonical tag as each page is for a different product and I think its going to be difficult to differentiate each page. I was wondering: 1. If this has a negative effect on the ranking of our homepage and other main product pages or if its an issue we do not need to worry too much about. 2. Static pages with dynamic content: Good for SEO?
I wanted to know ones thoughts on reducing duplication by creating a static page with a few dynamic fields. Has anyone done this? If 75% of a page is static and 25% is dynamic, is that a good ratio? It's an idea I am thinking about to combat duplication issues affecting ecommerce pages. Some ecommerce sites generate a new page for a small change like size, but the content is the same. What if you could create a single static page and depending on the size chosen, only those fields connected to the size are dynamic? Everything else remains the same. For caching purposes, you always submit a cached page with default values. Wouldn't this work? Isn't this a solution for duplicate ecommerce pages? It would also help in ranking, rather than multiple external links across duplicate ecommerce pages, it would just be to a single page.

Ecommerce: content on category pages
I have to optimize some online Shops and after Panda I really don't know what to think about thin content on product overview pages anymore... used to be that we could improve our rankings easily just by adding 1-2 sentences on such a page. This always worked for non-overly competitive terms. Now It feels like it doesn't work any longer, but I couldn't put my finger on it and I don't have the resources to test. I would add max. 3 lines of text directly over the product thumbnails. What do you think? Is it worth adding some text on a product overview page or do I not even have to bother post-Panda?0 -
What is the best duplicate content checker that will check by phrase?
I create a lot of landing pages for individual keywords on my site. An issue that I've run into is I unknowingly use some common phrases repeatedly on different pages and therefore sometimes get dinged by Google. I'm basically looking for a tool that would check the content of a new page against all the other pages on my site and check it phrase by phrase. Most of the tools I've found make you put in two URLs to check against - I need it to check against hundreds.

Best practice for franchise sites with duplicated content
I know that duplicated content is a touchy subject but I work with multiple franchise groups and each franchisee wants their own site, however, almost all of the sites use the same content. I want to make sure that Google sees each one of these sites as unique sites and does not penalize them for the following issues. Best Practice for Deleting Pages
