301 Redirect Only Home Page/Root Domain via Domain Registrar Only
-
Hi All,
I am really concerned about doing a 301 redirect. This is my situation:
-
Both Current and New Domain is registered with a local domain registrar (similar to GoDaddy but a local version)
-
Current Domain: Servers are pointing to Wix servers and the website is built and hosted with Wix
-
I would like to do a 301 redirect but would like to do it in the following way with a couple of factors to keep in mind:
-
99% of my link are only pointed to the home page/root domain only. Not to subdirectories.
-
New Domain: I will register this with wix with a new plan but keep the exact sitemap and composition of current website and launch with new domain.
-
Current Domain: I want to change server pointing to wix to point to local domain registrar servers. Then do a 301 redirect for only the home page/root domain to point to the new domain listed with wix. So 301 is done via local registrar and not via Wix.
-
Another point to mention is it will also change from Http to Https as well as a name change.
Your comments on the above will be greatly appreciated and as to whether there is risk in trying to do a 301 redirect as above. Doing it as above it also cheaper if I do the 301 via the wix platform I will need to register a full new premium plan and run it concurrently to the old plan whereas if I do it as mentioned above will only have the additional domain annual fee.
Look forward to your comments.
Mike

What are the risks involved? Lose Traffic and Rank you will found much information out there about that. In my own experience, you will have a drop in traffic that you will recover in time-frame 3-6 months. No matter how well you made the migration
What are the risks involved? In your case, I would be building links to your site even before running the migration also creating social signals in order to avoid the Google sand box

Hi Roman,
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
If I only move from Http to Https (No 301 redirect, no name change).
What are the risks involved? Will I lose page rank while my website updates? Given that all the correct steps/measures are taken?
Will my current backlinks become ineffective do to the switch over?
Regards
Michael

Based on what you mentioned this will be your new path
- old domain --> domain register --> new domain ( too many redirections)
All redirects carry risk. While it’s super awesome that Google is no longer “penalizing” 301 redirects through loss of PageRank, keep in mind that PageRank is only one signal out of hundreds that Google uses to rank pages.
So your domain age is a factor that should keep in mind. Ideally, if you 301 redirect a page to an exact copy of that page, and the only thing that changes is the URL, then, in theory, you may expect no traffic loss.
There is evidence that Google treats redirects to irrelevant pages as soft 404s. In other words, it's a redirect that loses both link equity and relevance.
How to Completely Ruin (or Save) Your Website With Redirects
There are a few salient points to keep in mind about Google’s change to how PageRank passes through 3xx redirects.
- All redirects carry a degree of SEO risk.
- While 3xx redirects preserve PageRank, 301s remain the preferred method of choice for permanent redirects.
- keep in mind that PageRank — and other link equity signals — are only a portion of the factors used by Google in ranking web pages.
- Beyond PageRank, all other rules about redirection remain. If you redirect to a non-relevant page, you likely won’t see much of a boost.
- The best redirect is where every other element stays the same, as much as possible, except for the URL.
- Successful migrations to HTTPS are now less prone to lose PageRank, but there are many other crawling and indexing issues that may negatively impact traffic+rankings.
Happy redirecting!

Website can't break into Google Top100 for main keywords, considering 301 Redirect to a new domain
A little background on our case. Our website, ex: http://ourwebsite.com was officially live in December 2015 but it wasn't On-Site optimized and we haven't done any Off-site SEO to it. In April we decided to do a small redesign and we did it an online development server. Unfortunately, the developers didn't disallow crawlers and the website got indexed while we were developing it on the development server. The development version that got indexed in Google was http://dev.web.com/ourwebsite We learned that it got indexed when we migrated the new redesigned website to the initial domain. When we did the migration we decided to add www and now it looks like: http://www.ourwebsite.com Meanwhile, we deleted the development version from the development server and submitted "Remove outdated content" from the development server's Search Console. This was back in early May. It took about 15-20 days for the development version to get de-indexed and around 30 days for the original website (http://www.ourwebsite.com) to get indexed. Since then we have started our SEO campaign with Press Releases, Outreach to bloggers for Guest and Sponsored Posts etc. The website currently has 55 Backlinks from 44 Referring domains (ahrefs: UR25, DR37) moz DA:6 PA:1 with various anchor text. We are tracking our main keywords and our brand keyword in the SERPs and for our brand keyword we are position #10 in Google, but for the rest of the main (money) keywords we are not in the Top 100 results in Google. It is very frustrating to see no movement in the rankings for the past couple of months and our bosses are demanding rankings and traffic. We are currently exploring the option of using another similar domain of ours and doing a complete 301 Redirect from the original http://www.ourwebsite.com to http://www.ournewebsite.com Does this sound like a good option to you? If we do the 301 Redirect, will the link-juice be passed from the backlinks that we already have from the referring domains to the new domain? Or because the site seems "stuck," would it not pass any power to the new domain? Also, please share any other suggestions that we might use to at least break into the Top 100 results in Google? Thanks.

What things should I consider if I am doing a 301 redirect on only 1 page/blog post?
I wrote a blog post on one of my websites and it got picked up by reddit and I got a bunch of nice backlinks and now that website got a nice boost overall, and especially that blog post page. I now wish I would have posted the article on a different website of mine. I would prefer if this other site was getting the traffic and the good backlinks that I've acquired. What are the pros and cons if I move the content over to my other website, and 301 redirect just that one article to the article location on my other website? The blog post I wrote almost instantly began ranking for certain terms in Google. Ideally I would like my other website to rank for those terms, but I realize there will be some differences as search engines look at the website as a whole and take many factors into consideration. I know there are tons of case studies and information about moving entire sites etc but I couldn't find much on this. Any advice, questions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Is it safe to redirect our .nl (netherlands) domain that we have just purchased to our .com domain?
Hi all! We've recently developed a German version of our website with German translation and now we have just purchased a .nl domain, but with this one, we want all of the copy to remain in English. Is it ok to redirect our .nl domain to our current .com website or will this give us bad SEO points? Thank you!

What will happen after I 301 this domain?
A while back I created a new website. Somehow my "scratch" copies of the site got indexed even though I didn't have links built to them. (In the future I will use noindex tags when I am playing around with designing). Now, I have three versions of the site online...let's call them TheRealSite.com and Practice1.com and Practice2.com. Practice1.com and Practice2.com now rank #1 for their main keyword. (It's a relatively uncompetitive niche). TheRealSite.com is somewhere lower than page 20 despite having an exact keyword match domain name. I'm assuming that Google considered it duplicate content as it is the exact same thing as Practice1 and 2. I had considered simply removing Practice1 and 2 from the server, but I was worried that if I did that, I would lose my #1 rankings if TheRealSite didn't recover. So, what I've done is 301 redirect Practice1 and Practice2 to TheRealSite. I'm guessing that over time TheRealSite will come back to #1 and then I can just remove the files from Practice1 and Practice2. Is this the best way to handle this situation?

Domain Authority / Page Authority
I manage a site that has home page authority of 69, and overall domain authority of 63. To improve domain authority, would it help to remove some of the pages that have 0 page authority? There are over 1,000 pages to this site, and I always thought that the more pages you have, the better (generally). But, does it actually hurt the site to have pages that Google perceives as having 0 page authority, or does this have no bearing? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
