Software "card" carousel results

Hi all!
Does anyone have advice for getting a software product to appear in the card results at the top of SERPs?

not the ads (boxed in red). I am pretty sure there's no ad type like the carousel of tiles boxed in green, so I don't think Google Ads is the answer (could be wrong though)

They're ads, create a Google Ads account should be your first stop.

The next trick will be trying to ascertain if these results are a categorised search entity (e.g: news results, shopping results, image results, movie listings carousel) or whether Google has just noticed that certain search entities are thematically related and is front-ending them
When knowledge graph pulls through a slot of information or you get quite a generic looking insertion of universal search elements, often it's just Google crawling the web and putting 2 and 2 together by itself (without user / webmaster input). For some things though (shopping results, news results etc) there are specific methodologies for getting 'entered' into the results (for example unless you pay Google, you aren't getting in the shopping results period)
Next things I advise you to do:

see if you can work out whether it's a pre-determined listing type (or if it's something new)

take the top 5 sites linked to by this new carousel. Put them all into this tool: https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool - see if they share any common schema features. If they do, it might be something you can add to your own site

For example, on your exact linked search results I do not see any card-carousel of products:
Personalised search means that, despite people going to the same exact search results URL - often users see completely different things

"Leeching" backlinks...yes or no?
A lot of websites, by virtue of practicality, will link to wikipedia articles to explain certain concepts. Would it be worthwhile to reach out to those websites and ask them to change the link to a different resource if that resource is a much better alternative than the wikipedia article? Subcategories within "New Arrivals" section - duplicate content?
Hi there, My client runs an e-commerce store selling shoes that features a section called "New Arrivals" with subcategories, such as "shoes," "wedges," "boots," "sandals," etc. There are already main subcategories on the site that target these terms. These are specifically pages for "New Arrivals - Boots," etc. The shoes listed on each new arrivals subcategory page are also listed in the main subcategory page. Given that there is not really any search volume for "Brand + new arrivals in boots," but lots of search volume for "Brand + boots," what is the proper way to handle these new arrivals subcategory pages? Should each subcategory have a rel=canonical tag pointing to the main subcategory? Should they be de-indexed? Should I keep them all indexed but try to make the content as unique as possible? Thank you!

Where the "fudge-nuggets" are my internal links?

Why is "Noindex" better than a "Canonical" for Pagination?
"Noindex" is a suggested pagination technique here: http://searchengineland.com/the-latest-greatest-on-seo-pagination-114284, and everyone seems to agree that you shouldn't canonicalize all pages in a series to the first page, but I'd love if someone can explain why "noindex" is better than a canonical?

What is the difference between link rel="canonical" and meta name="canonical"?
Hi mozzers, I would like to know What is the difference between link rel="canonical" and meta name="canonical"? and is it dangerous to have both of these elements combined together? One of my client's page has the these two elements and kind of bothers me because I only know link rel="canonical" to be relevant to remove duplicates. Thanks!

"Too many links" - PageRank question
This question seems to come up a lot. 70 flat page site. For ease of navigation, I want to link every page to one-another. Pure CSS Dropdown menu with categories - each expanding to each of the subpage. Made, implemented, remade smartphone friendly. Hurray. I thought this was an SEO principle - ensuring good site navigation and good internal linking. Not forcing your users to hit "back". Not forcing your users to jump through hoops. But unless I've misread http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-many-links-is-too-many then this is something that's indirectly penalised by Google because a site with 70 links from its homepage only lets each sub-page inherit 1/80th of its PageRank. Good site navigation vs your subpages are invisible on Google.
