Old domain (example.com) to (somethingelse.com)
-
Hi there
I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. I want to redirect our old domain (example.com) to (somethingelse.com). They are both hosted separately.
The old domain has a domain authority of 20 and never ranked well. We can't be sure Google simply doesn't like the old domain. I'll explore the links again to check.
Another question is: do we even want to pass the old authority to the new website?
Thank you.

It depends on the relationship between the two domains. Either way, as long as the 2 domains are similar/relevant to each other I would definitely suggest leveraging your old domain (A DA of 20 isnt terrible) in 1 of 2 ways: 1. A 301 redirect as you mentioned or 2. keep the old domain active and link to and from it to build up the DA of both sites.

I kind of knew the answer to the question, you've clarified my thinking a lot.
It seems logical that we should start afresh and change any good links with the webmasters we can.
Thank you so much for your feedback.

There are 2 main things to consider
1. Branding: Is your brand powerful enough that the old domain could still have direct visitors If most of your audience is a one-time interaction then starting fresh and rebuilding your brand could be the best option. I would also look at your pages with traffic, What pages did you get the most traffic from and maybe redirect those pages and replicate those same pages on your new domain. ( Make sure to keep the copy, title tags and descriptions consistent )
2. Do you have any authoritative sites linking to you? With SEO it's about relevance/Authority and Google seeing your an expert in this space. If you have topical links ( Trade publications, news sites, online editorials ) that are deemed to be authoritative in your niche and has an audience of your potential customers, organically reach out to those editors, webmasters and ask to change your link to the new domain. You don't lose authority and you start gaining back what you may have won without having to start from the beginning.
At the end of the day, if you are starting fresh due too poor SEO from the past, I would say to build the new "fresh" domain from the ground up. Create a relevant copy, get topical links to your industry and create a website that users want to come back too. This will help you win every time.

Lost ranking after domain switch
I recently migrated from https://whitefusemedia.com to https://whitefuse.com. The website URL structure and content remained the same and I followed all the best practice guidance regarding checks on the new domain and appropriate 301 redirects. I have seen traffic drop by about 50% and the traffic that is still coming through is mainly coming through links still listed by Google under the old domain (https://whitefusemedia.com). Is this normal? Should I expect to see this bounce back, or is there anything I can do now to regain the rankings?

Redirect old shop to new domain
I have an old Magento shop placed on a subdomain: http://webshop.teamout.dk/ Now I have created a new shop in another store system called ShopOrama on a new rootdomain: What is the best way to get all my already indexed sites from google to redirect to my new site with the new META title + description? I have tried the Magento > Catalog > URL Rewrite, but it contains over 500 redirects already and making custom redirects for all my sites will take a lot of time. Because of the old site being a subdomain I can't change address in GWT. I'm looking forward to your solutions

Www.xyz.com v/s xyz.com creating duplicate pages
I just put my site in moz analytics. The crawl results says I have duplicate content. When I look at the pages it is because one page is www.xyz.com and the duplicate is xyz.com. What causes this and how can it be fixed. I'm not a developer, so be kind and speak a language I can understand. Thanks for your help 🙂

Does a sub-domain benefit a domain...
I have seen some mixed comment as the whether a sub-domain would benefit from the authority built up by its domain... but does a domain benefit from a sub-domain?

Moving most (not all) content to another domain
Hi there, My company website has 3 main sections, two of those sections (each containing approx. 50 pages) will be moving to a separate website. The new website will also be owned by the same company. The new domain does not yet exist. I read this guide http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-guide-how-to-properly-move-domains , its very good, however it refers to moving the whole domain to a new URL. Are there any specific differences to consider in my situation for a partial move? Many thanks in advance! Nigel

Should I wory about spam domains linking to me?
A while ago my site had a pharmacy hack done to it and created a ton of spam links. I've since fixed the issues on my site but I'm still showing links from their sites. See screen shot: http://awesomescreenshot.com/0497cc147 I think they are links from the spam site to me and not my site "yakanger" linking to them correct? Do I need to worry about these? Can I get rid of them?

What is the best method to block a sub-domain, e.g. staging.domain.com/ from getting indexed?
Now that Google considers subdomains as part of the TLD I'm a little leery of testing robots.txt with something like: staging.domain.com
Technical SEO | | fthead9
User-agent: *
Disallow: / in fear it might get the www.domain.com blocked as well. Has anyone had any success using robots.txt to block sub-domains? I know I could add a meta robots tag to the staging.domain.com pages but that would require a lot more work.0 -
A client will be translating their entire site into French in addition to English. For SEO purposes, should I host it on the same domain or create its own dedicated domain?
The current site is a long-standing site with good authority and a good number of links. Thanks....
