What can be done to regain backlinks dropped (20%) in May 4th Core update?
-
We have seen two large drops in backlinks (10% drop twice) after the May 4th Google Core update. What can be done to "get them back"? And what is the best way to identify them. We are talking tens of thousands.
Any help or insights are greatly appreciated!

Pascal,
Going by the numbers of links you're talking about (tens of thousands being only 5-10% of total links) in relation to them being lost in the core update, makes me wonder about their quality. It makes me wonder if your rankings might have dropped, as well--I mean really, except for the people who closely watch the traffic brought in by hard-earned back links, most people would rather not have to worry about the dang things at all. Am I right?
Anyway, the seemingly most obvious explanation is that the pages and/or domains those tens of thousands of links reside on were devalued due to google's algorithm update and Moz's crawler/algorithm didn't incorporate them into subsequent updates as a result. Are you seeing the same sort of thing on other platforms?
It may turn out that the owners of the sites hosting those tens of thousands of links may be able to turn things around on their site(s) and all those thousands of links return to the realm of visibility. But really, I don't know if I'd be clamoring to get them back, if I were you.
If your rankings haven't dropped, consider yourself lucky and take it as a lesson to develop better back links. If rankings have dropped, well, take that as a lesson to get better back links too. : ) In either case, if I were you, I'd take a very, very close look at them with an eye toward disavowing them--and maybe any more thousands you have that you might think could be in jeopardy in a future core-style update.

"have seen two large drops in backlinks (10% drop twice) after the May 4th Google Core update"
It is possible to lose the physical backlink because of an update you can definitely lose backlink equity but the physical backlinks would not be touched by an accurate meaning Google might find some links that consider worth nothing and demote them but thay would still physically point to your website.
you are going to want to run a crawl your website making sure you have no broken links 404's etc.
you can use Moz, screaming frog, deep crawl, oncrawl, Ahrefs, etc.

The best way to Identify the missing backlinks is to use a tool like Moz Link Explorer
however, I think it's very unlikely that physically lost backlinks to your website because of May 4th Google Core update

"get them back"
You need to you'll need to lineup the site backlinks with the URLs they were pointed to and remain the old URL or create a 301 redirect to an extremely similar page when I say extremely similar I mean almost identical page.
What I also consider doing means it's an outreach if you lost a lot of links to your site miniatures listed above will be to show you exactly what was lost in it sounds like it's a technical error.
if it is something more than not use pitchbox.com they are by far the best method reaching out to people who have moved or removed your links.
If you want to share the domain be happy to take a look for you.
I'm guessing this is just a coincidence regarding the update unless you have other information?
respectfully,
Tom

Backlinks not indexed on MOZ
Why our backlinks do not show up? Even GSC shows a good amount of our backlinks and other applications show too. But in the case of MOZ, it still shows 0 backlinks and 0 organic visibility. Don't you guys think this puts a user of your software way behind in terms of competition and real data? If my backlinks will be considered by MOZ, when will it be❓

Backlinks and SPAM
I was doing some back link review of competitors and I have noticed that many of our competition have 300+ do follow back links from Justia.com and an additional 300+ do follow links from law.cornell.edu (they share the same database). The links on Justia are from different pages and they are all going to the root of our competitors site. So the questions are as follows; 1: For the purpose of SEO is this considered SPAM 2: If not SPAM, then does it have a positive effect on the competitions website and should I attempt to emulate for my client. Thanks in advance. -Jeff

Difficulty getting relevant backlinks
I run a very niche blog on getting section 8 housing. I've had the blog for about 6 years and have paid attention to it on and off. For the past few months, I've been ON again. What's appealing to me is the amount of potential traffic the keywords have and small competition. I have knowledge on the subject. I've read Moz seo guides, etc... The problem is government sites rank high (understandably) or other sites that are nonsense / scams when you search 'section 8 application'. It's very hard to find active bloggers to do link exchange is with as the sites that rank high are trying to scam people and obviously I can't get government back links. I've tried reaching out to people with no avail. I think I have good informative content. All of my adsense goes to charity but at this point it's not much. I'd like to get it out there, white-hat style, but I'm having difficulty. Any suggestions (please be specific), on how I can target sites that would be relevant to this topic and not do generic back-linking (unless you think news submissions, etc will work)? Thanks!

Old Spammy Backlinks but No Manual Penalty...No Results
We have taken over a site in which the client had unfortunately hired an SEO consultant who bought bad comment spam links. Webmaster Tools does not show a manual penalty of any kind but clearly this was bad practice from the former "SEO" consultant. I believe we have a good structure of the completely new website we have built for the client but I am not sure of the best way to reduce any negative fallout from the previous actions. I've read conflicting information about submitting disavow report to Google for the comment spam links. In some cases, I have read that it would be irrelevant since there is not a manual penalty. I am fairly certain rankings are being negatively effected from this action and looking for the best way to neutralize the algorithmic penalty. Not sure if this helps or not but I use GWMT "Download Latest Links" and see that the soonest Google discovered one of these links is 4/4/2013. Most of the links were generated some time during 2012. How do you even begin to try to reach out and have comment spam manually removed...when most of the sites that allowed the comment spam to begin with are spam sites themselves?

When do backlinks start helping?
I have been working hard at getting quality backlinks but I had a lot of keywords slip in rankings this week. This may because I have been extremely busy for a week and haven't added a lot of content to my site. But I thought the backlinks would be helping. How long does it take backlinks to start boosting your site and what results should I see? I am focusing on getting backlinks from a site with a PR of 7. The others have a PR of 4-5. They are the BEST sites in my niche.

Notification of backlink creation
Hi I was wondering if any one knows of an automatic updating service that notifies you when a back link to a site becomes live? Could this be achieved in google alerts perhaps?

Effectiveness of Forum Backlinks: specifically Paul's Backlinks
I know the general consensus is that these kinds of backlinks are of low value, however I'm curious as to anyones present day experience with them and if they are providing any value. More specifically, I am curious if they can do harm. I don't see how they could, as it would be a very easy tactic for an unscrupulous competitor to sabotage another by implementing them for their competitors. I can see possibly losing rank if they were discounted, however if this is the case, then it would only be rank that would not have been gained in the first place, minus those kinds of links. I ask because I have competing websites who have started to outrank me (they have been climbing and improving through each Google algorithm change in the past year), despite the fact that my mosrank and authority are better than every single one of them. But they have a sheer growing volume of backlinks that I can't match (seemingly low value when I look at their link profiles). Plus my domain is older (9 years as opposed to 3-4 years), and my site is clearly better (in terms of aesthetics, usability, content, etc), as well as my link profile being selectively cultivated from truly relevant sites. None the less, they are starting to kill me at this point -and I don't have the luxury of time. So....I was wondering about the wisdom of upping my volume of forum type links, as this is the only area of measurement where I can see my competitors are beating me. I am a believer in true, difficult, quality inbound marketing - however it is not getting the job done. Any thoughts on this?
