Mobile Accessibility?
-
How can I check whether my website is accessible on mobile phones? Is there a tool that allows you to check if your website is opening on different mobiles? Also, is it better to have a dedicated website for mobiles or the original developed in a manner that it appears ok on mobiles as well?
Cheers!

Hey, mobile is getting larger and I know that half of my web browsing (at least) is done on my smartphone and with android bringing smartphone features to the wider market then, it's just a matter of time before the world has the web in their pocket.
We tend to use Wordpress for most of our sites and if possible when we develop for clients. It is pretty SEO friendly out of the box and can easily be tweaked further if needs be. For mobile there are (free) plugins that allow you to serve a unique, simplified version of your site to mobile users and it takes about 5 minutes to download and install it.
For mobile device (apple/android/ipad etc) you can use WPTouch - it has a free version that does the job and then a pro version that provides even more features. It has a load of AJAX and HTML5 goodness and is easily customised by non technical sorts through the control panel.
For those who are willing to dig into the code, it provides the same sort of foundation as a good theme and you can easily do more to brand it up and serve a spinky mobile version of your site with maybe a days worth of development. There are a bunch of others as well, onswipe is great for iPad so take a look around see what works best for you.
WPTouch Pro is the best one I have seen but there are similar plugins for Joomla, Drupal, Expression Engine etc so again, take a look and see what you can find.
Working on a bespoke site? Well, you could always take one of these solutions as a starting point, pick it apart and learn from it. Saves reinventing the wheel and some of these solutions are quite mature and robust now so again, there are options.
Hope it helps & give me a shout if any questions, I have been through the mill with this so happy to help.

I find that a lot of quality sites will actually determine what my mobile platform is and then ask if I'd like the mobile version of the website. I prefer this to automatically taking me to a mobile version.
In my opinion, mobile sites are going to become less relevant as users move to better phones and better phones move to better browsers.

Yeah, you might even want to show mobile users some different content for example

Try this, I hope it helps: http://ready.mobi/launch.jsp?locale=en_EN

A good tutorial to CSS for desktop and CSS for mobile on the same page is available at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/dw_html5_pt1.html.

I like App dev (I learned a bit of objective C to write my own iPhone apps), but one thing you learn very quickly in that space is that many have come before you, and this becomes more true every day. Simply making another "me too" app won't cut it. However, if you have something of value to offer your audience, something that requires (or would benefit) the native hooks that app development provides to you, than I would say (budget permitting), yea go for it. With Apples change in policy on what can generate an app, there may even be cheaper options avilable.

Owing to the increasing popularity and usage of mobile devices worldwide, it's better to have a site developed for mobile phones with domain name m.example.com. Also, emphasis should not be on design but content. Mobile phone users are more interested in the content and design only supplements it. Having a contact form is of no value but a link to call the business is much more sensible.
As far as investing in mobile applications is concerned, you should come up with something innovative and should not do it just for the sake of doing it. You should plan something which engages user andif that's not possible due to the nature of your business, tie-up with some other business is an option.

What would you say about investing in Mobile Applications for most popular platforms like Iphone, Ipad etc?

Here is how we handle mobile: Check site stats, and if combined they don't total more % wise then the cut-off for traditional browser testing in general (5%, 10%, etc.), then treat mobile like you would any sub-threshold browser... that is, keep it in mind, test if you have the opportunity, but don't waste resources on it (caveat here obviously being a site that targets mobile, but if that were the case something tells me there would be a desk drawer full of devices to test with already). That being said, the mobile hits we see of any significance come in the form of iPhones, iPads, Andriod devices and rarely a Blackberry. Good news is, most of those devices have a browser that will render something close to a desktop browser. So it seems as these (still somewhat elusive) days of mobile approach, I think the days of thinking of mobile as a different beast that needs separate sites or exhaustive testing come closer to an end. Good news all around

Regarding the question of testing a site on various mobile platforms, see this article about mobile emulators:

Honestly, mobile implementations can be tricky depending upon your website and what kind of content you serve up and how.
However, the best solution in my mind is to check what internet browser your users are using and if it detects a mobile browser, have it display a specific CSS stylesheet that modifies the existing website for mobile users. This is easy to do and in my opinion is the best solution because by creating a separate website you have to create double content, more sites to manage/maintain, you split rankings/possible links, etc...
It works the same way websites do that have IE6 or IE7 or IE8 special stylesheets, it detects what browser is requesting the website and displays the appropriate files based on that.
I hope this helps.

AMP vs Responsive Design? Mobile SEO
Hello !! We are developing a new website with responsive design. As is recommended, the idea would be to have a unique site for mobile and desktop, with same content and same url for both devices, using responsive design to adapt the layout depending on the device. My doubt in here is about the AMP pages? If my website has responsive design, perfectly optimized for mobile do I need somehow AMP pages? As far as I understand, these amp pages would be useful if I had different pages for mobile, but this is not the case. Am I correct or am I missing something? Thanks for your help :

Is The HREF Link "Title" Tag Needed on Mobile Websites?
Hello To Those Who Are Wiser Than I, I am wondering if the href link "title" tag is needed, or serves any purpose, on mobile websites? Also, does it effect SEO in any way? I ask because generally the href link title tag provides more information to the user when they scroll their mouse over the link - but this action does not happen on mobile! Users have no mouse and thus no extra information would be displayed. I'm really wondering if it still matters for SEO purposes on mobile though. -The UnEnlightened

Requirements for mobile menu design have created a duplicated menu in the text/cache view.
Hi, Upon checking the text cache view of our home page, I noticed the main menu has been duplicated. Please see: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.trinitypower.com&strip=1 Our coder tells me he created one version for the desktop and one for the mobile version. Duplicating the menu cannot be good for on page SEO. With that said, I have had no warnings reported back from Moz. Maybe the moz bots are not tuned to looks for such a duplication error. Anyway, the reason the coder created a different menu for mobile in order to support the design requirements. I did not like the look and feel of the responsive version created based on the desktop version. Hi solution to this problem is to convert the Mobile version menu into ajax. what do you guys think? Thanks, Jarrett

Is it cloaking/hiding text if textual content is no longer accessible for mobile visitors on responsive webpages?
My company is implementing a responsive design for our website to better serve our mobile customers. However, when I reviewed the wireframes of the work our development company is doing, it became clear to me that, for many of our pages, large parts of the textual content on the page, and most of our sidebar links, would no longer be accessible to a visitor using a mobile device. The content will still be indexable, but hidden from users using media queries. There would be no access point for a user to view much of the content on the page that's making it rank. This is not my understanding of best practices around responsive design. My interpretation of Google's guidelines on responsive design is that all of the content is served to both users and search engines, but displayed in a more accessible way to a user depending on their mobile device. For example, Wikipedia pages have introductory content, but hide most of the detailed info in tabs. All of the information is still there and accessible to a user...but you don't have to scroll through as much to get to what you want. To me, what our development company is proposing fits the definition of cloaking and/or hiding text and links - we'd be making available different content to search engines than users, and it seems to me that there's considerable risk to their interpretation of responsive design. I'm wondering what other people in the Moz community think about this - and whether anyone out there has any experience to share about inaccessable content on responsive webpages, and the SEO impact of this. Thank you!

Mobile website strategy
Hello all! This question is about mobile websites. Any suggestions are welcomed. The facts: We have recently built a mobile website for our business using the separate mobile urls (parallel mobile website on a m. sub-domain). We are in the service industry and while our customers are most of the time on the go, it is important for them to find the price and order the service as fast and easy as possible. The redirect from desktop to mobile happens when customers are accessing the website with a mobile devices and it's done automatically. The mobile version does not have any content and serves only as a search and order function. The SEO has been made for the desktop website only and we are ranking really well for all competitive keywords in our niche. We want to keep the mobile website simple and clean so we are not planning to add any content on it.The questions: Since we are not planning to have much content on the mobile website, do we need to do any SEO for it? If yes, why? What are the benefits? Should we add content on the mobile website and why? Is there any down-side from an SEO perspective due to the fact that the website redirects to the mobile version? How are the inbound links going to behave in this case? Do we need to link these two websites although there is no risk about duplicate content? (links, canonical tags, sitemaps) Will the mobile website take advantage of the link building made for the desktop version? Should we allow the mobile website to be indexed having the fact that this is just a search & book tool? (at the moment it is blocked via robots.txt) Thanks for reading, looking forward to your answers.

Best Way To Have HD Videos On Site That Will Work On Mobile Devices
Hi, I hope someone can help me with this. I am working on a site for a client who works at a video production company. They want to have a fair few HD videos on there site but also for the site and videos to be viewable on mobile devices. I have got a responsive wordpress theme and the site is beginning to take shape. I am wondering however how I can best get the videos to display on mobile devices while maintaining a good load speed. Until now I have been using amazon S3 which stores and feeds the videos and I use Easyvideoplayer to embed the videos. The problem is they do not appear to show up from mobile devices when using wordpress. can anyone suggest the best way for me to still feed the videos from S3 but get them to display on mobile devices. oh, they are private videos so they cannot be placed on youtube.

Hom much does getting a mobile website improve the "mobile ranking"?
There's been speculation about Google totally not ranking sites that are not mobile, but as far as I can see many sites rank THE SAME on mobile devices as on regular stationary PCs/lap-tops. I had hoped for a radically improved ranking once a mobile site was built. Or is it just that it takes a TON of time for it to go through and then it gets better or is it like with regular sites that a new mobile site on a sub-domain is parked in some form of mobile-sand-box? Also, does putting a mobile site on a ranking domain, as subdomain help, e.g. m.testingsite.com instead of testingsite.mobi ? Thanks.

I NEED ADVICE: Need Web Software for customers to access backend
I have a prospect in the credit repair industry. Does anybody know of some software where the clients can log into their own accounts to see the progress? The feature I am looking for is like a Real Estate website where the brokers can create their own accounts and upload their own properties.
