No followed links, what happens to the PR?
-
Hi,
I have read a few times, on here and other places that when a website applies a no follow tag to a link the PR is not retained but instead disappears (evaporates) thus neither website benefiting.
Is that true? If so what is the actual benefit of no following a link?
-
You raise an excellent point, I had completely forgotten that. EGOL has the right of it, Matt Cutts said it evaporates and aside from that we don't really know. I've seen nothing since that gives us any more information and I think given how things have changed you'd have a lot of trouble running an experiment to find out.
I should have been more careful when I spoke
Nofollow is something I honestly don't worry about in my day to day linking practices, to me it's just a way of indicating that my linking is not a personal endorsement of the site I am linking to.
While my first and fourth paragraphs above may be null and void, the rest I believe remains true.
One thing I forgot to add above (my poor memory is a theme here) is that the site receiving the nofollowed link still gets the traffic from the link and maybe some lesser residual link benefits. There is a reason that nofollows still feature in the SEOmoz analytics.

Thanks,
So your saying it is retained on the website?
Check it out, EGOL post para 3 - http://www.seomoz.org/q/noindex-follow-is-a-waste-of-link-juice
That's just one of the reasons why I started questioning it but I have seen it else where.
I suppose it's not really a question as I don't actually worry about it that much but I like to know so the question had to be asked.
Thanks for the reply.

It doesn't evaporate, it just reduces the flow considerably from one site to another, allowing the linking site to retain some of it's "juice".
It's also a way to indicate a sponsored link, keeping your site in line with Google's spam guidelines.
Or you can use it to link to a site you want to talk about but don't want to be that associated with.
There are very good reasons to use nofollow, but it's important to keep your linking natural, so don't take this information and decide to nofollow everything to preserve PR.
I would also encourage you to worry a lot less about Page Rank in general, but that's a battle for another time.
EDIT: read next reply and my follow up for revisions and my errors.

No follow on class - is it correct?
Quetstion, Due to some recent SEO issues on our website on an audit, we found that a potential risk could be all the semi-sitewide links derived from a buy now pay later provider's code in our source code. Our developer implemented Rel= no follow in the following context... <p class="afterpay-paragraph" style="display:block; margin-top:0.3rem;" rel="nofollow"></p class="afterpay-paragraph" style="display:block;> Is what the developer has done, adding it as a class correct? and will it work correctly for SEO? or should i tell the developer to go back and include the no follow code instead as href="https://www.afterpay.com/terms" rel="nofollow"> and add the same to each external .png link too? | |

Rel=canonical vs noindex/follow - tabs with individual URLs
Hi everyone I've got a situation that I haven't seen in quite this way before. I would like some advice on whether I should be rel=canonicalzing of noindexing/following a range of pages on a clients website. I've just started working on a website that creates individual URLs for tabs within each page which has resulted in several URLs being created for each listing: Example URLs: hotel-downtown-calgary hotel-downtown-calgary/gallery?tab hotel-downtown-calgary?tab hotel-downtown-calgary/map?tab hotel-downtown-calgary/facilities?tab hotel-downtown-calgary/reviews?tab hotel-downtown-calgary/in-the-area?tab Google has indexed over 1500 pages with the "?tab" parameter (there are 4380 page indexed for the site in total), and also seems to be indexing some of these pages without the "?tab" parameter i.e. ("hotel-downtown-calgary/reviews" instead of "hotel-downtown-calgary/reviews?tab") so the amount of potential duplication could be more. These tabbed pages are getting minimal traffic from organic search, so I've got no issues with taking them out of the index - the question is how. There are the issues I see: Each tab has the same title as the other tabs for each location, so lots of title duplication. Each individual tab doesn't have much content (although the content each tab has is unique). I would usually expect the tabs to be distinguished by the parameters only, not have unique URLs - if that was the case we wouldn't have a duplication issue. So the question is: rel=canonical or noindex/follow? I can see benefits of both. Looking forward to your thoughts!

How to re-follow using the WPSEO plugin
Hello, I unindexed numerous blog low quality blog posts and nofollowed them at the same time using the Advanced meta tab for the Yoast WPSEO plugin. I am trying to reindex them, which I figured out and can successfully do, What I cannot figure out is these posts will not return to follow status and remain nofollow. I have been recreating the blog posts, but this is very time consuming. Is there some way to do this without have to reduplicate a new blog post? I Googled this and searched MOZ with no luck. thank you Mike

Site Wide Link
I have just run up the link explorer on my site and discovered that every page home page link points back with the text home - I assume this is bad in terms of SEO , my site name is ccie and I assumed that it put the site wide link of ccie to the entire site, however it seems to be the breadcrumb default of home which is doing it/. www.rogerperkin.co.uk/ccie Should I be looking to change this so my top keyword points back from each page to the home page. I am running wordpress and assumed the site name was the home link on all pages. Can anyone advise the best practice? Thanks

100 links on one page
we're recommended 100 links or less on one page. is the 100 links including header and footer links?

Are footer links at the end of each page still considered to be a valid tactic?
This is pretty much an opinion question, I was under the impression that footer links had been devalued almost to the point of uselessness, and if they weren't going to be of any real use to the users of the site why bother. I was speaking to a web developer though whose opinion I do largely trust who remains very pro footer links, and I was wondering what everyone else thought. Am I being too dismissive, or are footer links on the way out?
