Running a separate WP theme for the blog section?
-
Hey guys, I’m somewhat new to SEO, but I’ve caught on a lot these past few years. Recently I’ve started working with a web dev who is one of those types that ‘doesn’t believe in SEO’ whatever that means. I’m a content guy myself, but I know enough about SEO to recognize when something is fishy, especially since this particular case has to do with my job.
Here’s the gist of it. The dev wants to keep the main site on a custom CMS, but run the blog on a separate WordPress platform. In other words, nodepositfan.com would be on a custom CMS, but nodepositfan.com/blog would be on a separate WordPress setup. I’ve never seen this done before. I’m wondering how this might affect technical SEO down the road. Will the site be penalized in any way because there are essentially two CMS running on the same domain?
I was thinking of escalating this further up the chain, but I wanted to check with you guys first. Let me know if this dude is a complete hack or am I just not familiar enough with this subject.

@woddyisland This could be a good practice. This is usually implemented when working on large website that has a lot of content. In this way you can manage everything easily.
On the other side, this can affect the SEO somehow. Let's suppose your domain authority is increasing by getting good backlinks and you are getting good traffic. You need to pass that to blog WordPress directory manually. You can add a link to that by using crawl depth equal to 1. In this way you may not lose SEO. Make sure to have the best technical SEO practices. I can help on that if needed.

@woddyisland Hi!
There is nothing inherently "wrong" with setting things up like this. It used to be done quite a bit a few years back when e-commerce sites (using an e-comm cms of some kind) wanted to add a blog. If the current cms you are running doesn't easily support adding blog functionality then installing wp in a sub directory can be a convenient way to easily get blog functionality added. Google does not really care how you set up your content management, using two cms is perfectly fine - just make sure that technical best practices are implemented (in both cms systems in your case!).
Hope that puts your mind at ease

Content From a Large Guide that will be released in sections
Hey Mozzers, Please Help! My new client has a blogger who is writing a multi-part series for them and releasing one part each week. Each part is about 500 words. I know that longer, in depth content generally provides better user signals like "dwell time" and even social shares....but i have to balance this with the fact that the client wants to publish one new post a week for SEO and to give users a reason to come back to the website. Should i just wait a while and combine the posts, using a 301 to redirect all the small posts to the big one? Thanks in advance, Nails

My main site is www.isacleanse.com.au (Obviously targeted to Australian Market) and also www.isacleanse.co.nz targeted to NZ. The main Keywords im targeting are 'Isagenix' for both and also Isagenix Australia, Isagenix Perth, Sydney (Australian cities) and Isagenix NZ, Isagenix New Zealand, Isagenix Auckland etc.. for NZ The Australian site gets a lot more traffic and Australian market gets a lot more searches - I also have a section www.isacleanse.com.au/isagenix-new-zealand/ on the Australian site. The question is am I best off redirrecting the .co.nz domain completley to the Australian Domain to give it extra SEO Juice?0 -
Blog home page and SEO
Why do most blog owners not put content that is unique to the home page above the fold before posts begin?

Using WP All Import csv import plugin for wordpress to daily update products on large ecommerce site. Category naming and other issues.
We have just got an automated solution working to upload about 4000 products daily to our site. We get a CSV file from the wholesalers server each day and the way they have named products and categories is not ideal. Although most of the products remain the same (don't need to be over written) Some will go out of stock or prices may change etc. Problem is we have no control over the csv file so we need to keep the catagories they have given us. Might be able to create new catgories and have products listed under multiple categories? If anyone has used wp all import or has knoledge in this area please let me know. I have plenty more questions but this should start the ball rolling! Thanks in advance mozzers

Is my Company Blog Causing issues?
We have a company blog. IE companydomain.com/blog/. Much of the content is unrelated to what we do. So why do we do it? Cover local topics that our customers may be interested in and searching for. Get them in the back door so to speak. Link bait, social sharing etc Develop a marketing culture that's engaged always learning. Customers get to know the people behind the company. Here's my Pickle If i sub domain or separate the site entirely, i won't benefit from all the juice we're generating. If i keep the status quo, since much of the content isn't directly related to my "category", logic tells me that i could be diluting my website in Googles prying eyes. Feedback PLEASE.

Guest Blogging Funny Problem!
Well it made me laugh and then cry a little after anyway. I have a keyword which is ranking page 1 position 7, I created a really nice article with content relevant to the keyword maybe around 600 words. I spent maybe half hour researching blogs on myblogguest looking for one that was based in the same country, had really good mozbar stats, even checked out how quickly other posts got indexed. I put 2 anchor text links in the article and managed to get the blogger to post the article. Next day checked the rankings and the post on the blog is now position 7, and has knocked me to position 8. I'm tempted to ask the blogger to change the title tag not to include my targeted keyword. Anyone got an advice on this?

Duplicate Content on Blog
I have a blog I'm setting up. I would like to have a mini-about block set up on every page that gives very brief information about me and my blog, as well as a few links to the rest of the site and some social sharing options. I worry that this will get flagged as duplicate content because a significant amount of my pages will contain the same information at the top of the page, front and center. Is there anything I can do to address this? Is it as much of a concern as I am making it? Should I work on finding some javascript/ajax method for loading that content into the page dynamically only for normal browser pageviews? Any thoughts or help would be great.
