Multi National Company that Doesn't Want to Implement International SEO
-
I have got an interesting situation where I have a client who wants to merge two ccTLD's into one. They currently have .fi and .com and they want to merge both sites to .com
.fi is for finland and .com for USA.
They want to merge the sites and the original plan was to use subfolders for each country and pair with hreflang.
However the team now wants to merge both sites with NO subfolders differentiating between finland or the US.
My understanding of International SEO that this is the most opposite from best practices, but is there any specific reasons why they wouldn't want to do this?
I'm struggling to find any specific reasons that I can cite to the client that would argue why we should at least do a subfolder or some sort of international seo strategy.

@webuniversalp1 Yes, hreflang tags need to be created for each page "appropriately" as covered in my previous response to help search engines show the right version page to the right geo/audience.

El tema es que vas a tener que redireccionar las dos webs, no sé si mantendrás el contenido de la .com pero si no te espera un auditoria grande dependiendo de la web, en cuanto a lo que dicen en los anteriores sobre hreflang pienso lo mismo.

@naeemgari Hello,
You need to use the hreflang tags for each page, with this Google will not penalize your content and will understand that they are two versions with different languages.
-
@naeemgari I agree with that.

@jkhoo for international SEO the strongest signal for search engines is ccTLDs. The next best option would be a sub-folder URL structure with the correct hreflang tag declarations.
For your core keywords is there low / no search volume in Finland? From a business standpoint, managing two websites can be tedious. You need to build content & backlinks for two domains.
However, from an SEO standpoint, the preferred option would be to keep the ccTLDs. They are the best indicator of relevance to local SERPs. Think about your audience in Finland are they likely to visit a .com domain from SERPs or a .fi domain? Search engines would also prefer showing more targeted and relevant results to users. Therefore, ccTLDs for target regions and international SEO are the best options.
The next best route would be sub folders with appropriate hreflang tag declarations & xml sitemaps.
Additionally, site mergers/migrations generally result in a loss in organic traffic and visibility which can range from a quarter to over year(s).

Tracking International Keywords
Hi I haven't had much luck tracking keywords on my international sites let alone discovering new keywords. What are some strategies/suggestions to accomplishing this? Currently I have campaigns set-up for the UK, Germany, France, and China in additional to our main US-Canada campaign.

Multiregional / Multilingual SEO - Subfolders Question
Hello all, I wonder if you can help me... I have a question about subfolders in multi-regional / multi-lingual SEO - more specifically in reference to targeting the UK and the US. Having looked at some global websites these are the types of implementations I've most commonly seen: UK subfolders .com/uk .com/gb .com/gb/en-gb | .com/en-GB .com/gb-en .com/en-gb .com/uk/en US subfolders .com/us .com/us/en-us | .com/en-US .com/us-en .com/en-us .com/us/en Are any of these approaches better than others or is it all a matter of personal preference? What's the reason for using .com/gb over .com/uk (or vice versa) for example? Secondly, my assumption is that the examples above which include language subfolders do so because these companies are targeting different speaking users within these countries. Would I be right to think that since the organisation I work for is only targeting the American speakers in the US, we wouldn't need to go so far as to have language subfolders in addition to location subfolders? Would be great to get some feedback / suggestions! Thanks!

International SEO - Targeting US and UK markets
Hi folks, i have a client who is based in italy and they set up a site that sells travel experiences in the sout of Italy (the site currently sit on a server in Italy). The site has been set up as gTLDs: www.example.com They only want to target the US and the UK market to promote their travel experiences and the site has only the english version (the site does not currently offer an italian version). If they decide to go for the gTLDs and not actually change to a ccTLDs (which would be ideal from my point of view) how are the steps to be taken to set this up correctly on GSC? They currently only have one property registered on GSC: www.exapmple.com therefore i guess the next steps are: Add new property - www.example.com/uk and and set up geo targeting for UK Existing property - www.example.com/ set up geo targeting for US In case the client does not have the budget to optimise the content for american and british languages, would still make sense to have 2 separate property in GSC (example.com for US market and example.com/uk for UK market)? Few considerations: Add canonical tag to avoid duplicate content across the two versions of the site (in the event there is no budget to optimise the content for US and UK market)? Thank you all in advance for looking into this David

International SEO & Duplicate Content: ccTLD, hreflang, and relcanonical tags
Hi Everyone, I have a client that has two sites (example.com & example.co.uk) each have the same English content, but no hreflang or rel="canonical" tags in place. Would this be interpreted as duplicate content? They haven't changed the copy to speak to specific regions, but have tried targeting the UK with a ccTLD. I've taken a look at some other comparable question on MOZ like this post - > https://moz.com/community/q/international-hreflang-will-this-handle-duplicate-content where one of the answers says **"If no translation is happening within a geo-targeted site, HREFLANG is not necessary." **If hreflang tags are not necessary, then would I need rel="canonical" to avoid duplicate content? Thanks for taking the time to help a fellow SEO out.

IP Address Geolocation SEO - Multiple A records, implications?
Hi, We operate an ecom site, with a .com TLD. The IP address of the hosting is based in France and indeed we seem to see quite a lot of traffic from France. How relevant is the A record of the domain for SEO? Is it still an important signal to help Google geolocate? And, if that is the case, is there a case for having multiple A records for the domain? Like an IP Address in France, an IP address in Italy, etc... that way the domain would have multiple A records... Thank you

Is this hurting our SEO: company1.uk.com, company1.ru.com, company1.de.com, etc...?
Hello I work for a company which is using this kind of subdomains, that look like domains such as company1.uk.com, company1.ru.com, company1.de.com, but they are obviously not. We also own company1.com where the main site in English lies. We are one of the leader portals in one financial sector, and I am wondering if our SEO can be hurted by these fake "domains". I understand that we get some effect from the other domains hosted under this domain, and they are probably not as high quality as ours and they are probably unrelated. **- Would you recommend us to stop using these and use subdomains? So change: "company1.de.com" and use "de.company1.com" instead? Should we expect an increase in traffic after this change?** Any help will be appreciated.
