Our "home page" is behind a member wall, options?
-
So www.pch.com(portal) redirects to www.pch.com/unrecognized(landing page) if you are not registered with us and logged in. This means that the search engines are not logged in, so they see only our landing page.
It used to be that there was no portal/home, on pch.com, that was just the landing page, but that changed about 6 months ago. We do rank for our brand terms, but my company would like to rank for terms like "sweepstakes." They DO understand why we don't, thankfully. They don't think SEO is magic voodoo. They get it. But they asked for options, as I have said that the portal on www.pch.com really is a good page to optimize for non-brand, core terms like sweepstakes....but only if the search engines can see it.
I gave them these options, and they asked me to seek out more. So any thoughts would be good:
1. Best case scenario would be to abandon the landing page, just have the keyword rich portal page be the actual home page with no re-direct. (this won't happen, but I decided it needed to be first on my list).
2. Turn the portal into the home page (remove the redirect), but have the landing page overlay in a light box. This should, if I am not mistaken, be a best of both worlds situation, where the light box landing page would still have all of the value of the actual keyword rich portal page behind it.
3. If the landing page has to remain as it does now with the non-logged in redirect to it, change the URLs so that the landing page is www.pch.com and the portal becomes www.pch.com/members/ or something like that.
Any other thoughts? Thanks!

And in this case, "can't" is not only dev code, but marketing code also. They are so afraid of change here...but I get that, we are successful too.
And just my saying "hey, we have the worst case scenario for SEO right now" is not always enough...they want more opinions. Which is why this Q&A feature of SEOMoz is awesome! Thanks again for your thoughtful responses.

Well, it's hard to refute your data with my total lack of data Have you tried any kind of hybrid approach - make it image-rich but use CSS-styled text and avoid the fully boxed/bannered approach? I'm just thinking that might not only make the button stand out even more, but it would make the text crawlable. Could be a dual win.
Unfortunately, when it comes to things like dynamic content, "can't" is often dev-code for "won't". I've been on that side of the fence, so I don't want to speak ill, but it's frustrating. I do think you're #3 is at least a good start, and should be relatively straightforward. I definitely share your concerns about the current setup.

Yes, it IS a giant ad The CTR for that "Begin" button is so incredibly high though, that it would shock you. I have been doing landing page optimization for conversion for years, and I am surprised at how high the CTR is for that.
I am not actually sure why we are not serving the home up dynamically, I have suggested it, along with some of the other suggestions I posted above. Most likely it is related to our very complicated proprietary CMS (actually two of them).
Thanks for the response!

I do not like that 303-redirect setup. It looks like Google is indexing pch.com, but the cache is empty, and title/snippet match the non-redirected page. This could look like an odd form of cloaking, and landing on "/urecognized" seems like a recipe for trouble (it's a really bad URL from a UX perspective, too - it sounds like an error page).
I'd also argue that the page for new visitors looks like a giant ad. It needs some explanatory content. Yes, many people know who you are, but we don't know what the site does or why we should care. What's "obvious" internally is completely opaque to the average visitor. Richer content on this page would serve both SEO and conversion.
Could you serve up the home-page dynamically - display member content if they're logged in but generic content if they're not, and avoid the redirect entirely? That's not quite like your (1) or (2), and I think it's safer than (2). If not, then (3) would be preferable, worst-case. Once a member is logged in and knows the site, a redirect is no problem.
-
Of course it is not a 301 redirect, it is not a perm redirect as it is a conditional redirect only, based on your status of being logged in or not.
I do see that I switched back and forth between our internal language for these pages and will try to clarify.
-
Please clarify what url you're talking about when you say "landing page" and what url you're talking about when you say "portal"? Also, I think your question would be easier to understand if you used "home page" to mean the index page--but I'm not sure that's what you're doing.
Also, your redirect from the index page to the unrecognized page is a 303, not a 301.

JS and HTML links: Any risk involved being employing two similar links on every page?
Hi all, We used a have a banner with link from all pages our subdomain. The link is JS link and it's linking to our website homepage from our sub domain. Recently we have added similar HTML link from all pages of sub domain presuming that Google might not be considering JS links. So, now we have 2 links (JS and HTML) from every page of sub domain pointing to the website. If Google considers 2 links, will there be any risk for employing same link twice from every page? Thanks

Internal Linking: What is the best practice for pages not included in Nav bar?
I never quite understood why internal linking was such a big deal for SEO, but now I'm having second thoughts and perhaps understanding it more. I always thought since most websites have a navigation feature--usually the menu bar located at the top and often another one in the footer--that internal navigation was usually already built in to most websites and therefore, a silly topic to make a fuss over; however, I may be the silly one after all. I am now creating pages that are not included in the navigation so.... What is the best practice for this? If I am creating say, pages for certain locations and those location pages begin to number in the hundreds, it makes my navigation bar a little too cumbersome to have all those pages in a drop down menu. So I made a Locations page and just link to all those pages from that page (and from nowhere else). But now I'm wondering if this could be a bad internal linking practice and perhaps hurt my online visibility as an SEO ranking factor. Is this a crawl problem? And if so, is there a better option that provides a good visitor experience while appeasing the search engines.

Google tag manager on blocked beta site - will it phone home to Google and cause site to get indexed?
We want to develop a beta site, in a directory with the robots.txt blocking bots. We want to include the Google Tag Manager tags and event layer tracking code on this beta site. My question is that by including the Google Tag Manager code, that phones home to Google, will it cause Google to index this beta site when we don't want it indexed?

Site with no ads hit by Page Layout update?
Hi there! Can a site that has no ads on it be hit by Google's latest Page Layout update? Can it be hit for just one or two keywords? My site (www.ink2paper.com) has a decline in Google organic traffic in early Feb so my suspicion is the Page Layout update. However I have no ads on the site. Digging into GWMT I find that it is only one or 2 keywords that seems to have taken a dive, mainly [photo paper]. I used to get around 80 imps a day for this term. Then on 6 Feb it was down to 50; 7 Feb = 34; 8 Feb just 4 impressions! I got a spike back at usual levels on 10 & 11 Feb, but since then it has been back down to only 5 or so impressions a day. [photographic paper] took a small hit at the start of February, but has nose dived since the start of April. The homepage performs well for Google organic traffic - low bounce (22%) and good ecom conversion rate (14%) - although this is likely to be largely branded traffic. I feel my site is a 'good' result for the search term [photo paper], although there is always room for improvement of course! Any suggestions as to why Google has stopped showing my site for these keywords? All help is greatly appreciated. Cheers,

Major home page change!
Hi Mozzers, Making a major homepage change on my site Orangeoctop.us. I am going from featuring content to featuring products, similar to how moz and hubspot feature their content on the homepage. Just to give you some numbers, the homepage only sees 2.6% of the total traffic and of that traffic half is direct. The homepage is going to be changed to OrangeOctop.us/guides. My Question: Is there anything that should be added to the homepage to ensure that I keep the same domain authority/page authority?

Writing A Data Extraction To Web Page Program
In my area, there are few different law enforcement agencies that post real time data on car accidents. One is http://www.flhsmv.gov/fhp/traffic/crs_h501.htm. They post the accidents by county, and then in the location heading, they add the intersection and the city. For most of these counties and cities, our website, http://www.kempruge.com/personal-injury/auto-and-car-accidents/ has city and county specific pages. I need to figure out a way to pull the information from the FHP site and other real time crash sites so that it will automatically post on our pages. For example, if there's an accident in Hillsborough County on I-275 in Tampa, I'd like to have that immediately post on our "Hillsborough county car accident attorney" page and our "Tampa car accident attorney" page. I want our pages to have something comparable to a stock ticker widget, but for car accidents specific to each pages location AND combines all the info from the various law enforcement agencies. Any thoughts on how to go about creating this? As always, thank you all for taking time out of your work to assist me with whatever information or ideas you have. I really appreciate it.

What's the best way to sculpt links on a page?
I know PR isn't a top ranking factor anymore, so "PR sculpting" isn't something to focus on. But isn't it still true that having more links that you need on any given page is worse than having fewer, in terms of that page's authority? I'm managing a site that has a lot of navigational links in the footer, which are duplicative because they're almost all included in the top nav bar, and several are triplicated in the sidebar as well. I wanted to remove 85% of these duplicative links from the footer, thinking they diluted the page authority and that most users probably won't scroll there anyway when we launch the site. The site owner is pushing back, though, not wanting to remove so many links because he believes they might be useful to some users. We can test our respective user-behavior theories after launching, but right now I have two questions: Will having a sizable number of duplicative links in the footer dilute the page's authority? and 2) Are there any other ways to reduce this dilution, aside from simply removing the links? (I know nofollow is not the answer, but possibly using iframes or Java or something like that?)

Duplicate Page Title
Virtually all of my pages are coming up with a "Duplicate Page Title" error even though the page title are different. I assume this is down to the end of the page title having the company name. Is this the reason and is it a problem to have a page title like below... "Page title description - Company Name"
