What is the best way to grow local seo outreach?

For example, I live in new york and most of my keywords, page titles and meta are featured for new york but I want to expand into new jersey.
Should I add create new content with those keywords, page titles and meta (blog posts, new pages)? Thats what I am doing but I wanted to see what the pros say.

Hi Thomas,
As you are running a design/SEO business, then Google does not consider your business model as truly local to anywhere and will only show organic results for queries like 'web design nyc'. So, everyone competing for phrases like this must do so organically. Your efforts will likely need to include on-going content development, link building and, perhaps, an additional outreach via Social Media, video marketing, etc.
Content development will most certainly stand at the core of your strategy, so finding something of interest and value to write about that will be relevant to your desired NJ audience is the task at hand. For web design firms, a natural choice would be beautiful writeups of projects you've completed for NJ businesses. You might also begin doing features of NJ-based businesses with awesome websites, or websites that could be improved, or websites that help the people of NJ is some special way. You can display some of your expertise by critiquing what works. Basically, you're going to have to brainstorm some great ideas that would make for excellent content and then keep brainstorming and writing so that you can begin to build authority around search terms that relate to New Jersey. But, again, the end goal here will be organic rankings rather than local ones, simply because Google stopped displaying web design and SEO firms for common local queries some years ago.

If you are expending to another area (state) then in that here are the following things you can do!
Create Pages for another location, this will allow you to get ranked quickly within the new state and also help you get better leads from the new location.
Also if you have a new physical location as well then in that case you should try to get new listings for a new location so that you can rank easily on locals as well.
Try to get bloggers within that area and outreach them to write review about your company!
You can also outreach to magazines and other blogs within the area and ask them to write a guest post in it, this will allow you to rank better as well as brand reorganization across the new location

Im not really a local business. I have clients across the country. We do web design so it can be done with a phone call and emails but I get a decent amount of local business and I knew I had to focus on somewhere specific for seo.

Yes, that's what you should do for organic traffic but since it sounds like you don't have a physical presence there, I wouldn't expect to show up in the local results. Before going after NJ traffic though, I would say to first be sure that you are already ranking well for your NY related searches--and converting that traffic efficiently. For local businesses, it typically makes sense to maximize the potential of your closest, most likely customers before reaching out a broader audience.

I inquired with a few different SEO agencies and I cannot afford their services, $3000+ a month and my market is not huge as you will see in the search data below. The way it seems, there are 4 main categories to optimize for: Properties Houses Apartments 'Move to countryname' information Should I optimize my homepage for a 'property' term, 3 other pages for 'house', 'apartment, and 'info' terms? How do I pick keywords to optimize for, esp. considering that they are basically the same e.g.: house in countryname buy countryname house buy house countryname buy or property countryname countryname property property in countryname ...and should I pick just one? What sort of content could I include in a "buy a house in countryname" type of page and how do I write around such keywords? I am having an issue finding examples to follow as there is no competition to emulate and the other markets/countries are dominated by large portals which also seemingly get ranked based on size / authority. Beyond that there is virtually no interest in the country = no traffic, besides general bs such as the language, the weather and such where there are a bunch of huge websites on the first page - so I am not sure what content could I use to drive traffic. I will come up with something, but there are no obvious ones.. My domain name is 1 year old, I have no links yet. Moz reports Page Authority 5, Domain Authority 2 for my domain. Does having ' ' around your keyword/phrase within the content on your website have an effect on SEO for that keyword?

Any way to track rank of a URL for keyword BEFORE setting up in Rank Tracker?
Hello all I realize this data is probably impossible to get but thought I would take a chance and ask. Anyone know of a way to see ranking for a URL for a keyword before being setup in Rank Tracker? What's the best way to find ranking keywords and phrases?
What's the best way to find ranking keywords and phrases? I have tried Google Keyword Tool but it just doesn't do the job for me (or I'm using it wrong). My main focus is people who are looking for energy saving tricks, but I'm not sure if this is the right keyword / keyphrase. The goal of this question is not to get other people to do the research for me, but rather to find the right tools and usage of those tools for the job.

Best tool for drawing sitemaps?
Drawing up sitemaps is one of those tasks that seems to take me twice as long to do electronically that it does on paper. Unfortunately, sitemaps scribbled on sheets of A4 paper aren't much good for sending and sharing. So, Mozzers, what tool or software do you recommend for drawing up sitemaps quickly and easily? So far I've tried using Visio, Excel and Word but if there's a dedicated tool out there, that would be awesome. Thanks in advance, Cheers

SEO research via Google Adwords
I've read several times of this technique for determining if a particular keyword phrase is worth the effort of optimizing for in organic search. In Adwords create an Ad Group with a single exact match keyword phrase and let it run in Adwords until you have enough clicks to measure valid results (I've often heard 200-300 clicks). If you are unable to convert the search term via paid search, the theory goes, it's probably not worth the effort to rank top 3 for that phrase and you should put your efforts elsewhere. Do any of you use this strategy? If so, have you found the results to be pretty consistently accurate? Thanks, Mark

Local SEO: By city, by multiple cities, or by region?
My client is a kitchen remodeling company in Sterling, Virginia and is trying to rank well in local results. I am struggling with keyword selection mostly because I am still learning about local SEO. The city the company is located is Sterling, however their business comes from several other close by cities like Reston, Herndon, and Fairfax (Nobody lives in Sterling so they don't care too much about owning that in search engines). Is the right strategy: 1. Choosing one city and focusing on that (kitchen remodeling in reston, VA) 2. Optimizing for multiple cities (kitchen remodeling, reston, herndon, fairfax...) 3. Optimizing for an entire region (kitchen remodeling, northern virginia) I know it's hard to answer this with little information but gut reactions would be appreciated. I am a new SEOmoz member so excuse me if this question is too specific for this forum. I'm still getting a feel for the community. Thanks! Sean
