Links from non existant sites?
-
Hi! I'm new at all this I've taken a look at the backlink profile for one of my sites as it's seems its been hit by this last Penguin update. I'm finding links to my homepage from sites that no longer exist, like this one: http://mikimoto-pearls.org - does this hurt my backlink? I mean, I would figure it does since there's nothing there? If so, how do I get the link removed? Do I even need to? Disavow tool maybe?
Thank you!

Just because a site is down doesn't mean it won't go back up again. It could be temporarily suspended or the domain could have expired by mistake or it could eventually get 301'd from another domain. If it's a toxic link I would still treat it as being toxic and disavow it to be safe in case it goes live again. But yea, there is nothing to request to take down and if it stays 404ing it won't hurt you.

Yes, you have helped me a great deal. Thank you for your time.

Well yes, I guess you could look at it like that. If you lose a strong link then that could potentially reduce your domain/page authority. If you have been hit by penguin chances are you will have many more bad links than good though.
I would be careful about using the disavow tool without doing a full analysis of your link profile. Check out this recent post that runs down on the whole disavow procedure and has links for more info on identifying low quality links and trying to remove them: http://moz.com/blog/google-disavow-tool
Hope that helps!

Oh - one other question - if the links no longer exist, that could be hurting me, in a round about way though, right? I mean, what if it was a good link and now it's gone? Too many of those will cut my backlink profile and therefore push down my keyword rankings, correct?

Hi Lynn,
Thank you so much for your quick response! I guess I just need to keep on looking!

HI,
If the site no longer exists and the link no longer exists then no this is not hurting you. The moz data can be a few weeks out of date depending on when it last scanned that page/domain so it is normal to sometimes see references to links that are no longer there. If you have been hit by penguin then it is the dodgy links that ARE still there that will be doing the damage!

Does a nofollow link from a high DA site count towards trust?
I've been checking out competitors through the 'link intersect function in my Moz account. Many have got nofollow links from high DA websites. I understand that nofollow links do not count count as a backlink, but will they add towards the trust factor?

Is are Scoopon type sites a good place to get a link?
We have noticed that our competitors have links with equality from sites like this: http://www.groupon.com.au/ Scoopon type sites like this can be an effective way to generate sales for a business, I'm just wondering if these types of sites also have added value for SEO as sites like these do have a strong Domain Authority? Any thoughts on this subject would be most appreciated. Thanks!

If you discount a subscription when the client links to you, does that classify as a paid link?
For example, we all subscribe to MOZ, but if we received a 25% discount on our subscription if we linked back, would that be considered by Google as a paid link, or would it be seen as a sales tool / promotion?

Links from other sites in our network
I work for a large publisher with many websites, and it's common for our biggest sites to link to smaller sites within the network. These links are follow, site-wide, anchor text-optimised footer links. I think it's obvious that these links are harmful to the smaller sites that are being linked to, but it's hard to convince others of that, particularly because the toolbar PR benefit is very obvious. Do you think it would be better to: a) Remove the links completely b) Keep the links, but make them nofollow c) Keep the links (as it's not harmful) Thanks

Someone not removing a link to our site
Hi Mozzers, We recently worked with an SEO company that bought a few sitewide links without our permission which caused us to get a huge slap by the last panda/penguin update. We managed to remove most of the links except one site (The biggest one).

Different Link Titles Linking to the same page
So I'm doing a lot of link building but my question is how do search engines treat different link titles to the same page. For example, my main page is www.musillawfirm.com If I have 20 links from 20 sites linking to it as Melbourne FL DUI Lawyer and 20 more linking as Melbourne FL immigration Lawyer and More linking as Cocoa FL DUI lawyer etc... what happens? Do the search engines just rank me higher for all the terms or would it be better to always just link to separate landing pages? Thanks in advance
