How does this site rank no 1 for big terms with no optimisation?
-
Hi,
A client recently asked me abut a site that appears to have popped up out of nowhere and is ranking for big terms within their industry: http://bit.ly/11jcpky
I have looked at the site for a particular term: Cheap Beds I was using unpersonalised search on google.co.uk with location set to London.
The site currently ranks no 1 for that term and other similar terms.
The question is how?
SEO Moz reports no backlinks (they must have blocked?) Ahrefs and Majestic report report some backlinks but not many and no anchor text with the term in. The Page title and meta do not contain the term nor does the page seem to contain the term anywhere. The domain does have some age though has no keyword match in the URL. I'm a little stumped to how they are achieving these results.
Any Ideas Anyone?

I thought this may be the case initially but its not as they have been ranking for a while now, also their backlink profile is not anchor text targeted.
The only real backlinks I can see for them is Groupon, is Google favouring sites featured on Groupon?
-
how recently has the site been ranking? Maybe the site got a load of targeted backlinks very quickly (black hat) and OSE has not picked them up yet.
I have seen this before were the site will rank for a few days ( maybe a week +) before google realises it spam and dumps it.

I am aware of other parts of Google's alg's though generally the above mentioned algs are required for a decent listing, location of your server does not make a huge difference and yes agreed with .co.uk making a difference but the site in question is not .co.uk its .com so that point is irrelevant.
The question is not about my clients site ranking higher but a site that ticks none of the major alg factors being number 1 for a big search term.
No optimised meta for target keyword, no optimised backlinks for target keyword, no onpage optimisation for target keyword and a low social metric score.
The only optimisation I can see is meta tags, which Google does not use any more and apparently can do more damage than good if you spam in them which technically this site is doing.
I have also ran the Moz onpage report card for the term Cheap Beds and they get an F! In comparison to the next site down who get a B.
The website is very relevant for the term my question I suppose is how does Google know its relevant without it being optimised?
I am thinking either LSI which doesn't make a lot of sense in this situation, or Google is actually doing some sought of price comparison and working out that their products are cheaper than elsewhere, or Google is actually taking their meta tags into consideration (Highly Unlikely!)
Any suggestions please?

There are 200 total parts to Google's algorithm so for me to give you for you to give me only two metrics and for me to give you an honest answer is absolutely impossible unfortunately. However, that domain is ranking higher than you for whatever the keyword search I can twopence is what he said in UK. Make sure that your server is running out of UK mean to say that I mean that the IP address originates in the UK, and you already have a.co.uk TLD I'm assuming? All those things give me one bit. But you've given me two metrics there are so many others nearly 198. If you want an excellent resource I was going to distilled.net/u
sincerely,
Thomas

Dramatic drop in SEO rankings after recovering from hacking
A few months ago my client's website was hacked which created over 20,000+ spammy links on the site. I dealt with removing the malware and got google to remove the malware warning shortly within a week of the hacking. Then started the long process to do 301 redirects and disavowing links under Webmaster tools over these few months. The hacking only caused a slight drop in rankings at the time. Now just as of last week the site had a dramatic drop in rankings. When doing a keyword search I noticed the homepage doesn't even get listed on Google Maps and for Google Search instead the inner pages like the Contact Us page show up instead of the homepage. Does anyone have any insight to the sudden drop happening now and why the inner pages are ranking higher than the homepage now?

SEO for mobile sites?
Let's say I have an ecommerce site and it has a separate theme via device detection. So I may even have different content on the pages. So for example, on desktop, on mysite.com/flowers I have a video about flowers. But on mobile, I have 10 000 words of text. Will this page rank better for people searching via mobile? Will google give different search rankings, based on desktop vs. mobile? Or how is Google calculating this? Are there any good mobile SEO tips or a knowhow base?

SERP Question - Site showing up for national term over local term recently
Hey Moz, This has been happening to me with a couple of clients recently and I wanted to kick it out to the community and see if anyone else has experienced it and might be able to shed some light on why. (Disclaimer: Both clients are in the elective healthcare space)

Scenario: Client's site is optimized for a fairly competitive "procedural keyword + location" phrase. Historically, the site had been ranking on the first page for a while until it suddenly dropped off for that query. At the same time, the page now ranks on the first page for just the procedural term, without the location modifier (obviously much more competitive than with the location modifier). Searches on Google were set to the city in which the client was located. Not that I'm complaining, but this seems a little weird to me. Anyone have a similar situation? If so, any theories about what might have caused it? TL;DR - Site ranked on 1st page for "keyword + location modifier" historically, now ranking on 1st page for "keyword" only and not found with "keyword + location modifier" TRQd9Hu0 -
Ranking effected by Penguin 2.0
Hello Everyone, I am amazed to see that all the ranking of keywords got down after Penguin webspam algorithm updated on May 22, 2013. Is there any suggestion how we will recover and get the ranking back. Thanks

Do scraped or borrowed articles with my links still pass page rank?
I wrote some articles for Ezine Articles a few years back and i still see links in the ose to my site that are from these articles that were borrowed from the Ezine Articles bank. Do the links in these articles still count toward my site including link juice and anchor text or does google discount them as duplicate content? I was told that Google counts these links for about 3 weeks and then discounts them as duplicate content so it's like they don't exist. Any truth to this or should i make the articles on my site available for people to copy and paste into their blogs as long as they keep my links intact? Thanks, Ron

Merging Multiple Domains into a Single Domain and Its Effect on Ranking
My client had multiple top-level-domains. Each one represented an insurance program within a specific vertical. For all the sites at these alternate domains, there was a 30/70 mix of duplicate vs. original content. Some of the alternate domains ranked very well for their target keyphrase groups, where others were absent in results pages. We advised the client to merge multiple domains into their existing main domain, for usability and SEO reasons. We recently ran the merger. Here was our process: On the main domain, transfer the content such that it matches 1-for-1 content on the various alternate domains Setup Google Webmaster tools on the main domain Push the new content on the main domain live and submit a corresponding sitemap to Google Establish 301 redirects on the alternate domains, such that each alternate domain URL points to its respective page on the main domain We did this 12 days ago, and pages (previously on the alternate domains) that had ranked well on Google have now plummeted or are entirely non-existent. Did we do the right thing by merging multiple top-level domains into a single domain? Is this initial dip in rankings normal? How soon should we expect to see it return to its normal rankings?

High ranking for high volume keyword, but low traffic
We are ranked, according to Moz (and we've tested to back it up) #3 on Google UK for the keyword "Hire a Jet". According to Google, this keyword gets 22,500 local searches per month. Yet we get about 5 hits a month for that keyword. Any ideas why this is so low? It just doesn't add up or make sense whatsoever.
