Are Their Any SEO Dangers When Cleaning Up a Site
-
I'm doing some housekeeping on my website.
Removing old blogs that are out of date (2008) or things have moved on. The blogs I'm removing are being 301'd to relevant newer blogs.
Can this type of clean up cause any problems that affect the optimisation of a site?
Looking forward to hearing your views.

It does feel good cutting the dead weight and letting irrelevant articles go.
I am also listing what can now be updated and rewritten for a future post before the redirect is put in place
-
I am checking the links and traffic to those pages before I decide to redirect them.
A couple of months ago I did take a page down because I felt it wasn't relevant to our website. Our traffic was cut in half, but the amount of leads our website generated stayed the same, so effectively I had a better conversion rate
Just another factor to consider - is it relevant to our users.

When I do this type of clean up I always look at analytics to see how much traffic these pages are receiving. Are they pulling traffic from search, are the receiving traffic from links, do people who enter my site through other pages consume these articles.
Only after that analysis will I delete those posts. I often find that some of these pages are valuable and I write updates or completely rewrite them.
Once all of that is done then I delete and redirect. I feel good about deleting these because they cut dead weight from the site.

I think it depends on what pages you are removing.
If you have old blog posts that still get traffic and have links to them, you may want to reconsider keeping them or how you redirect them. You should be able to look in your Analytics and see the amount of traffic they get, and also look in OSE to see what kinds of links they have pointing to them.
We are doing something similar on one of the sites I manage and I was able to look at these factors objectively vs subjectively and make some good decisions. When we looked at old content (content prior to 2005) and looked at the factors above it was pretty interesting. There was one page that accounted for 65% of all pageviews out of several hundred articles in that time period. We obviously treated that page with greater care than the rest of the pages.
You will probably find a similar pattern, the 80/20 rule. There will be about 20% of your pages that you really should keep or be very careful where you redirect and the rest you can just let 404 or 301 to a subdirectory higher.
When you look at it this way, you can account for any SEO "equity" that a page might have and then know what the impact would be. Back to my example above, even if I deleted all of those old pages (including the one page that accounted for the majority of traffic to that group of pages) all of those pages combined only accounted for 2% of all my total pageviews. So, even if I screwed something up when I moved thi group, I know the impact was minimal and I can sleep a little better at night.

How long until I see an SEO impact from newly optimized site
We just recently launched a new version of our website. This new version allowed us to integrate research into technical SEO updates to enhance our search visibility. Based on experience from those viewing this post, what is a good average timeframe in which I should start seeing some effects from these changes in Google? I know this question is hard to answer because of all the variables that are part of the answer but I need something to take to the c-level as an estimate of what to expect. I figured experience might tell a good story here.

Does including your site in Google News (and Google) Alerts helps with SEO?
Based on the following article http://homebusiness.about.com/od/yourbusinesswebsite/a/google-alerts.htm in order to check if you are included you need to run site:domain.com and click the news search tab. If you are not there then... I ran the test on MOZ and got no results which surprised me. Next step according to :https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/40787?hl=en#ts=3179198 is to submit your site for inclusion. Should I? Will it help? P.S.

International SEO
Hi all, The company that I work for is planning to target some french (and some other foreign) keywords. The thing is, in our industry, you can't just hire someone to translate the content/pages. The pages have to be translated by an accredited translator. Here's the thing, it costs a LOT of money just to translate a few thousand words. So, the CEO decided to translate a few of our 'core' pages and SEO them to see if it brings results. My questions are, would it be possible from a technical point of view to simply translate a few pages? Would that cause a problem for the search engine crawlers? Would those pages be 'seen' as duplicates? Thanks in advance guys!

Multi-Location SEO: Sites vs Pages
I just started with a new company that requires multi-location SEO for its niche product/service. Currently, we have a main corporate website, as well as, 40+ individual dealer websites (we host all). Keep in mind each of these dealers consist of only 1-2 people, so corporate I will be managing the site or sites and content strategy. Many of the individual dealer sites actually rank very well (#1-#3) in their areas for our targeted keywords, but they all use the same duplicate content. Also, there are many dealer sites that have dropped off the radar in last year, which is probably because of the duplicate and static content. So I'm at a crossroads... Attempt to redo all of these location sites with unique and local content for each or Create optimized unique pages for each of them on our main site and redirect their current local domains to their page on our site Any advise regarding which direction to go in and why. Why is very important. It will be very difficult to convince a dealer that is #1 with his local site that we are redirecting to our main site, so I need some good ammo and reasoning. Also, any tips toward achieving local seo success will be greatly appreciated, too! Thank you!

How do you find a truely knowledgable SEO person to analyze are large site?
We are a large site, 5600 pages with local pages in almost every city across the US. We are struggling with page rank on some pages and I dont think its as simple as backlinks and its definitely not poor on-page SEO. I think we might have some truly technical issues that is causing us to get penalized in SERP's. Any agencies which analyze sites? This is NOT a job posting so please don't send me messages...I truly want to know how/where to find a solution to our problem. Thanks

PDF on financial site that duplicates ~50% of site content
I have a financial advisor client who has a downloadable PDF on his site that contains about 9 pages of good info. Problem is much of the content can also be found on individual pages of his site. Is it best to noindex/follow the pdf? It would be great to let the few pages of original content be crawlable, but I'm concerned about the duplicate content aspect. Thanks --

My domain name is free with my service with yahoo but it expires every year and gets extended automatically as I continue service, how does this impact my seo efforts? I've heard that the search engines prefer sites to expire in 3 years or more? Is this a fact?
