Keyword Rankings Report Accuracy
-
How many of you routinely have inaccurate data in your Moz Pro keyword rankings reports? I just checked 5 of our terms that came in this morning - yes, it's a not logged in, non-personalized, incognito, cleared cache search - and none of them actually ranked where Moz said they ranked.
One was listed in the top 5 and wasn't even on the first page. One was listed at position 3 but was actually at position 8, a big difference when it comes to CTR. And the report will have stuff like our brand name not ranked at all one week, then jumping by 45+ positions the next week, then gone the next week. And it doesn't fluctuate like that.
I get that the reports are general to what most people see, but should such big disparities be expected?

Hey David,
Tom brought up some good points and he's spot on with the fact that Google is always difficult to compare anything against. They have so many more details that we can't replicate even with incognito windows such as Region, IP Address, Time of Day, etc.
I took a look at your account and compared a handful of keywords. You definitely have some volatile keywords that fluctuate often. This makes it harder to keep the reports up to date with the daily rankings since we run these reports weekly. You may want to utilize Rank Tracker to check keywords a bit more manually if you want more control over your comparisons.
If you have more questions about your keywords and reports, the help team is always happy to investigate specific situations to give you more details about the comparisons. Feel free to email your examples to help@moz.com and let us dig in for you more.

Hi David
There's obviously a few things just to check on - such as checking the right localised version of Google is being tracked and also the fact that the rankings update each Friday and not daily.
Having said that, seeing such dramatic fluctuations is a bit much. It's probably a good idea to flag this to the customer support team and see if there are any issues.
In the mean time, if you're looking for a free keyword tracker that is accurate the majority of the time, you might want to try Rank Checker Ace for a web-based platform, or Rankerizer for a program that you can install on your PC.
Hope this helps.

Which is the better keyword strategy? Specifying page or seeing what ranks?
I recently began using another third-party tool that requires a list of keywords and the URLs I want those keywords to rank on (for example, "vegetarian recipes" on www.123.com/vegetarian-recipes). Is this a better strategy than using the Moz ranking tool to see which pages on my domain my target keywords are already ranking for? I can see how the former might mean we miss opportunities but the latter doesn't necessarily show how my priority pages are doing for specific keywords.

Why is my page rank disapointing
Hi fairly new here, so just getting used to everything one questions please. Just ran a crawl test of the website and this page http://www.livingphilosophy.org.uk/teaching-philosophy/index.htm came back with a page authority of 1. Other pages have a rank of 18 through 26 scratched my head for a few hours and came up with no ideas. thanks andy

Cities in Keywords Ranking Reports
So I've been in the habit of creating a master list of keywords concatenated with the city name so I can track my local rankings versus competitors. 1. Is this the correct thing to do to help hone in on who competitive my sites are ranking in the local market? 2. If so, by doing this the On Page reports seem to be totally screwed, because the searches I'm tracking (with city) vs the keywords I want to analyse for on-page ranking (without city), are different. What is the solution?

I'm having a hard time understanding branded keywords. When wouldn't I want to brand a keyword?
For example, why wouldn't I want to brand all my keywords with my company name?

SEOMoz ranking reports inaccurate for Google?
So I have notice that, at least for some searches, the rankings shown in SEOMoz's ranking reports are meaningless. I assume this is due to blended search results including local search. For example, I have a client, who is ranked 3rd overall for one of his most important search terms, but his ranking is based upon his local result (there are 2 organic search results and then he is the first local result). The SEOMoz report shows him being ranked 12th. Anyway I count down to the 12th ranked site (including local search, not including local search) his site is not there. In fact the only place it is in the top 3 pages is in the local result. As a local marketing consultant, almost all of my clients are looking to be found for "Jackson Hole" this or that, or "Jackson, WY" this or that, so this is a pretty critical issue to me. I would appreciate feedback. Thanks!

I am looking to create keyword reports filtered by labels
We have roughly 800 keywords and I have created labels for the different groups of keywords. What I would like to do is have weekly or monthly reports sent to me based on the labels associated with the individual keywords. Any ideas on how I can do this? Thanks David
