How Many SEO Clients Do You Have?
-
Hello Mozzers,
I'm wondering how many clients or SEO customers you all oversee? Do you execute on your own? Do you collaborate on every client or is one person responsible for their own.
Thanks
-
Thank you for the in depth response. I agree with you and EGOL that it depends on the type of client and size.
You have definitely given me a lot to consider. I'm starting to think I need to audit my own role and come up with a more strategic approach to how I handle each client. And your advice on how to "outsource" or manage parts that I am not personally executing on is helpful.

We own our website and do all content creation, online-offline marketing ourselves. Basicly we are not selling any inteligence we have. We are still learning.

I think EGOL says a lot with his comment re types of sites. An ecommerce site will typically take more time and attention than a 15 page attorney site. Sites that are large, publish a lot, have a reference type role, etc. are others that require more time and attention Do you have a role in development or are these all fully completed sites? Do you have a developer who assists you with changes, etc.? Can you take specific SEO needs to a developer who can execute the more complex items?
We are an agency and our staff is not set up as handling X # of clients but having varying roles. Within those roles, we are all constantly learning the roles of others. An example is copywriters learn SEO, HTML, etc. Our head of Local is quite competent at handling full site 301's and she is not a developer - she was taught by our head of dev.
For you, if you do not have a process and are instead running "helter skelter" it will be more difficult. So, let's break it down based on what you have here (and I am sure you have other "roles" you take on from time to time as needed.)
Onsite Optimization: Assuming you did not take on 9 new clients with bad on page, you should get to a place where the on page, on site is fairly stable. (Your data gathering/reporting should show when there is a problem). If you are having to redo onsite regularly, there is a problem that needs to be handled - what is causing it to be unstable? (CMS issues for example).
With link building, what are you doing there and what are you outsourcing? This is very labor intensive role and may not be a highest and best use of your time as an SEO professional. (Remember, whomever is doing it, you must inspect what you expect.) You state that **"...with some outsourcing when it comes to content creation (things like infographics, articles and some linkbuilding efforts)." **For us, we create a lot of content and that is why we have a copywriting team and a director of media who oversees that role. Beware if you are getting too involved with how the outsourced pieces are done - have a result you want and do most of your input at the beginning and not on correcting at the end.
Last, you handle monthly reporting. This, too, is one of those that when handled correctly in the beginning, should have little impact on your time. If you are spending a lot of time on it, then I would guess you do not have it set up in a cogent and manageable way. Usually, each client is getting something different as opposed to a more standardized reporting with specific 'unique reporting' that is set up early in the relationship.
If, your role is also taking all the data, deciding what is wrong/right, then creating a plan of attack, then meeting with the clients, etc. You are likely overburdened and have a role that needs to be organized. NOTE: I am NOT saying you are disorganized; I am saying the role may be. There are lots of ways this happens, but typically in an agency that is less mature, you take on clients at a lower cost to them. In order for the agency to profit some will just provide less resources; worse than that is when they just do not deliver on their promises.
So, I am guessing there is no "answer" in what I have given you. Hopefully, I have given you some things to think on and a way that you might be able to be of greater benefit to the agency - creating an organized role to minimize waste of resources.
All the best,
Robert
PS As to ration of in-house to outsourced efforts: I only outsource one thing and that is SEO Audit backup. When I do an audit, I go outside to one of three or four Moz top rated SEO pros and have them do back up audit for me. Not a full audit, but an overview of mine for errors or omissions. (And, rarely, for a second audit if there is apt to be a question in a legal or more complicated sense.)

I think that it depends upon the types of sites you are working on.
We work on one large info site and a couple very small niche retail sites. Two people, full time, almost 100% content creation.

Affiliate Links & SEO
Hi Looking at my backlink profile I noticed that I had 150 links coming from one site. Ahhhh I thought in light if the recent Penguin updates. Upon closer inspection I noticed that my link is only on the homepage of that site but because that site sells its product via clickbank they have got loads of versions of that site because of its affiliates. For example: MAINSITE is www.mainsite.com then there are 150 affiliates using hoplinks via clickbank so its: www.mainsite.com?hopmrbig www.mainsite.com?blablahblah etc etc The question: Will this hurt me? In theory I got 1 link on their homepage but will Google see it as 150 versions of the same site? Your thoughts please? SMP

★Does syndication of a news features from high Profile site like TechCrunch have a negative SEO impact?
As a co-founder of a startup that is weekly featured on high page rank news sites such as TechCrunch, The Next Web, TreeHugger , Yahoo News etc. These types of write ups are "SEO Gold" as they are high page rank sites with high relevancy to our sector and with unique good quality anchor text and copy. However... Within hours of each post going live the content and links are syndicated either via RSS or scraped and appear as duplicate content on in some cases 100's of very low quality and low relevancy content aggregation sites. To give you an example here are just two of the sites that are now appearing as linking domains due to this syndicated content and the links included in the article. Examples : Eco Market, The “Etsy For Eco,” Rebrands, Revamps, Raises & Prepares A U.S. Launch Sarah Perez | Technology | Page 4 The above are just a couple of examples amongst 100's that result from each feature. I would like to hear you opinion on if these links would be considered natural and you feel I should not take action or if you think these need removing by contacting the webmasters or disavowing the links? I am sure I cant be alone in having this problem and look forward to hearing you advice and tips

Local SEO Help
Getting confused about what is helpful. I have a few questions. Is it beneficial to link to other sites like wikipedia from our main url or our wp hosted blog? Does that help our SERP? We have just built a new sitemap for our site, which is good, we didn't have one before. Should I still do internal linking? 3)If I can get a person with another blog to link to us, would it better to get it in a post or on their main page with a button or text listing? Thanks everyone:) I am just trying to figure out how to spend my time wisely here.

SEO value in Twitter bit.ly links?
When I use opensiteexplorer for my webpage www.novelaspect.com and go under the "linking domains" tab, there is only 1 Twitter link that shows up. However, my competitors have multiple Twitter links. I've posted many many times on Twitter and linked the posts back to our website, but I've always used bitly to shorten the URLs. Is this what's keeping me from getting more backlinks from Twitter (which has a high domain authority!)? I haven't been able to find a straight answer anywhere yet, so I assumed using bitly is ok. Could it also be that opensiteexplorer takes months to register links? I seem to be missing many external links...In fact, the number of external links have dropped by around 10,000 in the past 2 months, and I know I didn't remove any links. Thanks!

One client, one b2b site and one b2c site - linking relationship
I have a client that has 2 websites in a particular industry. The first website concentrates on advertising services and products to other organisations/companies but does not sell anything online. The second website is an ecommerce site with many products from the same industry and is more a b2c operation. Would it be considered ok to add maybe 5 footer links from one to the other and vice versa? considering that they are footer links and will ultimately increase total links pointing to both site exponentially. Both sites are hosted in the same location.
