Blog home page and SEO

Why do most blog owners not put content that is unique to the home page above the fold before posts begin?
-
Hey Bob,
The short answer is that most people don't do this because they don't know that they should, or they haven't gotten around to it.
Static homepages with well-written introductory content are almost always better than a dump of 5-10 blog post teasers, even for blogs that don't have any other function than publishing blog posts. For examples of good custom homepages on websites that only feature blog content, I'd point you towards these examples:
- http://www.seattlehomestead.com (this is my site, but I think it's a good example of custom homepage/introduction content)

I'm not sure exactly what you mean about non unique content above the fold. Are you saying that it's static information or images there and not continually changing? Please feel free to elaborate.
Here are some general thoughts.
Thinking about user experience and seo, I come from the school of thought that people who come to your homepage first are generally coming there because they were referred to your brand. What I mean by that is if your homepage is your "brands" landing page and subpages are generally specific topics that don't necessarily pertain to your brand. For example. If I told you that the best seo tools in the world come from Moz.com, you would go to moz.com and check them out to see for yourself. But, If I told you that there was a great post on moz.com about international SEO, I would generally guide you to a sub-page of that site. Many blog owners what to tell the story of their brand on their homepage and don't really worry about "seo" for that page as they will naturally get SEO through brand mentions and links to their homepage. I pretty much never rank homepages for keywords. I know many people do but I generally don't focus on one. I focus on links to my homepage that have brand mentions and a pretty diverse link profile.

Hi Bob
I am not sure I understand the question you are asking. Please can you give some more information and perhaps an example.

Why does Google display the home page rather than a page which is better optimised to answer the query?
I have a page which (I believe) is well optimised for a specific keyword (URL, title tag, meta description, H1, etc). yet Google chooses to display the home page instead of the page more suited to the search query. Why is Google doing this and what can I do to stop it?

SEO page descriptions on mobile - how to hide while preserving the juice for SEO?
Hi everybody, On our pages we have crafted good text paragraphs for SEO purposes. On desktop everything is fine but on mobile the paragraph of text pushes the main content really low on the page. Is there a way of hiding the text while preserving the SEO juices and not getting penalised by Google for spamming techniques? I'd appreciate any recommendations on how to deal with this. Thanks very much!

Google indexing only 1 page out of 2 similar pages made for different cities
We have created two category pages, in which we are showing products which could be delivered in separate cities. Both pages are related to cake delivery in that city. But out of these two category pages only 1 got indexed in google and other has not. Its been around 1 month but still only Bangalore category page got indexed. We have submitted sitemap and google is not giving any crawl error. We have also submitted for indexing from "Fetch as google" option in webmasters. www.winni.in/c/4/cakes (Indexed - Bangalore page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_blr_cakes.xml) 2. http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 (Not indexed - Hyderabad page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_hyd_cakes.xml) I tried searching for "hyderabad site:www.winni.in" in google but there also http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 this link is not coming, instead of this only www.winni.in/c/4/cakes is coming. Can anyone please let me know what could be the possible issue with this?

Hi Everyone, I have published 46 articles so far on my blog. Recently I changed my SEO strategy including changing main page titles, changing the targeting pages for each keyword, ... . Do you think it is a good thing to go back through all of my blog posts and change the internal link building and modify them accordingly. Thanks,

Home Page or Internal Page
I have a website that deals with personalized jewelry, and our main keyword is "Name Necklace".

3 mounth ago i added new page: http://www.onecklace.com/name-necklaces/ And from then google index only this page for my main keyword, and not our home page.
Beacuase the page is new, and we didn't have a lot of link to it, our rank is not so well. I'm considering to remove this page (301 to home page), beacause i think that if google index our home page for this keyword it will be better. I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but i know that our home page have a lot of good links and maybe our rank will be higher. Another thing, because google index this internal page for this keyword, it looks like our home page have no main keyword at all. BTW, before i add this page, google index our main page with this keyword. Please advise... U5S8gyS.png j50XHl4.png0 -

High number of items per page or low number with more category pages?
In SEO terms, what would be the best method: High number of items per page or low number with more pages? For example, this category listing here: http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/90/fsx-civil-aircraft/ It has 10 items per page. Would there be any benefit of changing a listing like that to 20 items in order to decrease the number of pages in the category? Also, what other ways could you increase the SEO of category listings like that?
