Does adding subcategory pages to an commerce site limit the link juice to the product pages?
-
I have a client who has an online outdoor gear company. He mostly sells high end outdoor gear (like ski jackets, vests, boots, etc) at a deep discount. His store currently only resides on Ebay. So we're building him an online store from scratch. I'm trying to determine the best site architecture and wonder if we should include subcategory pages. My issue is that I think the subcategory pages might be good from a user experience, but it'll add an additional layer between the homepage and the product pages. The problem is that I think a lot of user's might be searching for the product name to see if they can find a better deal, and my client's site would be perfect for them. So I really want to rank well for the product pages, but I'm nervous that the subcategory pages will limit the link juice of the product pages.
Home --> SubCategory --> Product List --> Product Detail
Home --> Men's Ski Clothing --> Men's Ski Jack --> North Face Mt Everest Jacket
Should I keep the SubCategory page "Men's Ski Clothing" if it helps usability?
On a separate note, the SubCategory pages would have some head keyword terms, but I don't think that he could rank well for these terms anytime soon. However, they would be great pages / terms to rank for in the long term. Should this influence the decision?

As usual, a good answer from Chris Menke.
Santaur, you asked:
"Should I keep the SubCategory page "Men's Ski Clothing" if it helps usability? "I say "Yes". If it helps usability, as sub-category pages often do in this type of situation, you should keep them.
You can add content to sub-category pages to help them rank better for phrases that will bring in the RIGHT customer from the SERPs, even if they don't know yet what specific product they want. For example: "Overstock Ski Jackets" or "Discount Ski Jackets" would align with your client's value prop, target high-converting keywords, and bring in the right visitor to the right page.

Santaur,
Ultimately you should go with what makes the most sense to the visitor. If the client's only value proposition to the visitor is price, then that should be a primary factor in architecting navigation that gets the product in front of the visitor fastest. Keep in mind, though, that if price is their only value proposition, ranking in google is a slippery slope, and could be a strategy that may not pay off for them.
If your client can create a unique value proposition, the home page and category pages are useful tools for its presentation. A category page, for example is a great place for copy such as: "Our collection of mens ski jackets features a combination of warmth, style and value that you cannot find anywhere else online." (that's kind of a superficial example--it takes hard work to develop a list of features that will resonate with your particular audience)--and then proceed to give more detail regarding each of the features. The product pages, then, give your client the opportunity to get even more detailed regarding product features.
There's nothing easy about all of that and there's really no shortcut to it either. If the client is asking you, the designer, to be responsible for their success when their business model is based on a low price strategy, you should be pushing back on them because it's not going to be the difference between having a category tier of pages or not that will ultimately make the site a success.

Site-wide links for internet bureau
Hi mozzers, We are a internet firm building several sites and webshops every month. On almost every site we build we put a link in the footer as some kind of signature of our work. (similar to artists on their painting). Those are often dofollow links to our main page. We do get several new clients of those links each year. but in seo perspective, is this a really bad thing, or do you think because its not solely for SEO purposes its ok, but its not adding any extra weight because of some domains got 10 pages with our link on it, some ecommerce stores like 7.000. I can imagen google to give the same amount of importance to the 10 or 7k site. Whats your idea on it?

How to Break Up a Page with Too Many Links
My client has a live page with 100+ links subdivided into 10 categories that each have great potential keyword targeting opportunities. I'd like to improve this page and my intuition is to split it into 11 pages, one page with links to all the others and a bit of content about each. Here's an example of the potential IA: Dog Rescue Groups

Poodle Rescue - description
Cocker Spaniel Rescue - description
Poodle Rescue - description
Labrador Retriever Rescue - description
etc. --------- Golden Retriever Rescue
Link 1 - description
Link 2 - description
Link 3 - description Is this a good idea and will I see a big traffic drop overall at first? Also, these are all internal links, not external.0 -
Does Domain Mapping Leak Link Juice?
Hi everyone As per previous posts, we are in the process of setting up a new sideline to the business and after taking great advice from you guys, we have bought a new domain - which is fuelsos.co.uk - To save on hosting fees, I have created a subdirectory on our main site at http://lockcity.co.uk/fuelsos/ which is in the process of being mapped to fuelsos.co.uk (will take affect in next 24hrs) My question is, am I leaking link juice from my main site doing this? or should I look at buying seperate hosting? Many thanks, Abi

Linking from and to pages
My website, www.kamperen-bij-de-boer.com, tells people what campingssites can be found in The Netherlands for recreational purposes. In order for a campingsite to be mentioned on our website we ask them to place a link to our website (either using a text link or image link) and then we make a page for that campsite on our website with in the end a link to ther website, e.g. http://www.kamperen-bij-de-boer.com/Minicamping-In-t-Oldambt.html -> they in return link back to us. Since this comes natural will this or won't this be penalized by Google and so on for linkfarming. At this moment we have about 600 camping sites on our website alone linking to us (not all of them) and we are linking to them. Since this can be explained as link trading which is not as good for your ranking as one-way-linking what should be wise? Should i include a nofollow? I already have many links from other sites linking to mine without having to link back, is there anything else i can do with linking to ensure better ranking?

Adding no follow links on my site
I am getting a warning about having too many links on my page www.accessoriesonline.co.uk (152) but I don't want to remove any links from the site. Its an ecommerce site with categories across the top, featured products and then a further category navigation in the footer. Would it be beneficial if I added a rel="nofollow" to the links in the footer as these are duplicates of the one's in the header or would this harm the links in the header and the destination URL's which I definitely want to be crawled? Also, does anyone know if SEOMOZ considers links with a rel=nofollow as an actually link when they calculate their overview? Thanks in advance

Adding Google +1 To My Site
This may seem like a silly question, but I had my site designed by a third party and I don't know how to find this info. I want to add Google +1 button to my site. I've already added the script that makes it work in my , but don't know how to add the to the part of my site I'd like the icon to appear. If you take a look at my site, http://www.youdrivethesuccess.com/, you will see the twitter and facebook icons that follow you around the site in the top right of the page. I'd like to drop in the +1 right next to them, but I don't know how to get to it. How do I access this on the server? What section of my FTP do these lil icons live? A folder? Any direction is greatly appreciated...thanks.

How to optimize achor text links on ecommerce category page
A category page on an e-commerce sites, containing a list of the products within the category, usually shows the product image above the product text link. If both image and anchor text link to the product page, this would mean that the image is counted as the link in terms of ranking value. What would be the best way to make the anchor text count in stead of the image? I guess some ways would be: 1. Not making the product image a link
Technical SEO | | DeptAgency
2. Using some kind of link masking / redirecting technique for the image
3. Employing a technical trick to make the anchor text link come first in the code readable by search engines. What would be the easiest way to solve this issue? Or do you believe it's not worth bothering?0
