There is no limit to the number of 301 redirects a site can have. A few hundred pages is relatively small. Just make sure they are implemented properly.

Others may disagree perhaps but personally I'd say that 301'ing product to product, category to category is the way to go. From what I remember seeing a while back on the subject, Matt Cutts explained that it would be unwise to have too many 'hops' (e.g. 301 to 301 to 301 to 301...) but with redesigns etc doing a full product > product (page to page) redirect site-wide is fine.
At the end of the day it's best for the user!
re: the structure - with the new structure what is defining the 'keyword' part of the URL in '/productname-p/keyword.htm' ? You may be surprised what is possible in terms of automating (or at least semi-automating) things like bulk 301 redirects - especially if you can get the old URLs into an Excel file and manipulate them
I'd ask your digital agency (or whoever is doing the migration) if they can get their best Excel ninjas to have a chat with you about this.
At the absolute worst case, if there really is no way that this can be semi-automated, I'd say it's a job of a pot of coffee and some time with Excel open! A lot of the time though there is at least some automation that can be done in Excel.

Thanks for the response, the old structure was pretty flexible it's just "/productname.aspx " or really whatever keywords we wanted, but ending in .aspx.
The new structure is not as flexible, it is - "/productname-p/keyword.htm" and categories are "/categoryname/categoryIDnumber.htm"
So I don't think there's going to be anyway to automate this and we're looking at a few hundred products and a few dozen categories. Is there a downside to having that many 301 redirects?

I'd seriously look into 301 redirects.
How many products are we talking about and what is the current URL structure like?
The best way from an SEO, usability and revenue point of view would be to 301 URLS like-for-like - Sending domain.com/productabc.html to the same product on the new URL structure. This may be time consuming if you have 10's of thousands of URLS, but depending on the current structure you may be able to automate this at least a little.

What's the old structure
How many products/categories/URLs?

Backlinks to an anchor name URL: How Google sees them
I have been searching for the answer to this question and to my surprise have yet to find anything on the web. This is my situation: I have a form at the bottom of one of my pages and have another website that wants to link to this page, more specifically this form. I have an anchor link on the page to this form already. I was planning on sending the anchor name URL to the Webmaster to link to my page so their users will go straight to my form. My question is: do I lose link juice to my URL from this link because it is an anchor name URL? Does Google see this link that goes to a specific portion of my page to be less valuable than if I just linked to the plain URL? Cheers Sean

How Effective Are Links Between The Same Company's Websites With Different Domain Extensions?
Morning! The main competitor of an eCommerce site I'm working on has a total of 31 sites for 31 different countries. Each one of these sites has a different domain extension (.com, .co.uk, .fr, .it etc.), and every single one of these sites' pages links to all the other homepages through a dropdown menu on the navigation bar. When I pop the .co.uk URL (our main competitor) into Open Site Explorer, I'm advised they have a 45,079 links from 475 domains. If I look at 'just discovered' links, most are from their own sites - I guess MOZ picks these up every time a new page is created. Now, these guys are huge in the UK. They rank in the top 10 for pretty much every single search term and, to put it into some kind of perspective, their Search Metrics score is 33,000 compared to our measly 160! Don't get me wrong, they do get some decent links from authoritative sites, but it seem most of their links are from their own sites. How does Google view these? Does my competitor have these thousands of 'internal' backlinks to thank for their current position? I've just checked their .kr URL and this has 12.5 million(!) links from just 450 domains. Do every single one of these links pass equity? Or does Google just look at one from each domain? Thanks, Lewis

When's Linkscape update going to go live?
I've been keeping an eye on the Linkscape update calendar and am a bit confused! There was meant to be an update yesterday, but Open Site Explorer is still showing "Last index update: 8/14/12". When will the new data reach OSE? Been doing lots of link building and want to know if my efforts have been worth it! Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks! Alex

Should I use a branded url or an exact match, and which branded url?
I'm thinking of changing my client's 37 character exact match url because it looks spammy to me and Google says it will be turning the dial down on exact match domains. I still see a lot of value in it however and it is helping this client, albeit very little since he is new in his arena. His goal is to rank for keywords in that url so I hate to lose the benefit of that url. As an example, let's say his url is floridahealthinsurance-quote.com I'm concerned now because I plan to do some reputable and highly relevant link building and I'm afraid bloggers might hesitate linking to a spammy sounding url. This client does have a branded url that is short and sweet, something like millerbenefits.net, and that redirects to the long url. Back linkers could link to the short url instead. However, it lands people on the site with the long spammy-sounding url and they may not want to be affiliated with it. Something like millerbenefitsinsurance.com is available and it does have 2 keywords in it. Should I get that instead? In short the question is this:

Do you think it's a good idea to try to find synergy between clients for blog posts/citations/links, or should you keep clients away from each other?
Say you have for example three (in this case) clients, and: Client A sells red widgets Client B is a doctor Client C sellls blue widgets With some research, you find that: Red widgets (A) can make the process of blue widget creation (C) even more effective. Red widgets (A) can protect you from harmful things that doctors (B) are qualified to recommend that you stay away from. Furthermore, there are things that doctors (B) recommend that you do in order to maximize the benefits of red widgets (A) Blue widgets (C) carry with them certain potential health risks, which according to doctors (B) can be minimized using the following means Sometimes blue widgets (C) can be used to effectively repair red widget (A) factories ...and so forth. Sure you're really writing these articles to generate links and exchange authority, and frankly you started with "how can I find synergy between these clients?" rather than a with a great article subject that needed a citation which luckily happened to be another client, but the citations are legitimate and the clients are qualified to speak on the subjects where their expertise and interests overlap. Would you consider going ahead with this? Does anyone have any experience doing it? I could see potential pitfalls if clients were to interact with each other, but keeping yourself as the intermediary might well work and overall it seems like a decent way to grab low-hanging fruit as they say. What do you guys think?

My client's first press release...what to do?
My client is in the clothing, apparel tshirt industry geared toward a specific music icon. They have a few competitors, my spider senses tell me I will be able to get them great SERP standing, and place them in a very competitive position. Their company has been around for a while but has never written a press release. I had them craft a PR on the subject of cotton prices and how it has affected their business. A local paper will pick this up no prob. Where is the best place to go? It is not like it is breaking news, I dont want duplicate content, and I need an experts advice. Does the url text count as anchor text in google's algo?
I always try to strive for getting good anchortext in links that people link to my sites with, but sometimes they are not very web savvy, or just plain not willing to format the link the way i want it and we end up with links that use the URL as the anchortext. My question is, if i format a url such that it has keywords in it, and when someone makes a link like this: http://www.storwell.com/self-storage-toronto-bursary-application-form.php does google consider the words: storwell, self, storage, toronto, bursary, application & form as the anchor text?
