Lost Links in Google Webmaster Tools
-
Last week I had over 1800 backlinks showing up in GWT. 4 days ago I had 20, and now I have 5. I have a very diverse link profile ranging from social bookmarks to YouTube, to Business Listings (Yelp, etc), and they're all gone. Clearly there is not a particular segment of my links that are being targeted here, they've all been completely wiped out. My rankings have fallen, and where I was on page 1/2 for all my targeted KWs, I'm now on Page 3, 4, and 5. There are no penalties showing up in GWT, so I'm completely at a loss as to what is going on. Please help!
Website is: http://brownboxbranding.com

Hi Jeff, thanks for your question! Did you see the responses from Dana and Donna? They asked some very good questions. We'd love an update, thanks!

Possibly, if the change was recent. But I'd expect the impact to be temporary, until Google catches up to what has changed.
It would help if you standardized on the way you linked to your site from various profiles. I did a sampling and I noticed Yelp, Twitter and G+ link to http://brownboxbranding.com whereas Facebook and YouTube link to the www version of your site. That doesn't explain your problem though.
Have you (Jeff) checked your site to make sure Google Analytics is still installed on all pages? Is the same code installed on all pages? You should be able to tell if there's been a change by looking at your traffic reports as well. If there's a sudden drop on some pages, there's been a change.

I checked your site in OSE and looked at both versions of your URL: http://brownboxbranding.com and http://www.brownboxbranding.com
Has something recently changed with the way your domain is redirected? I ask because it looks like the lionshare of authority and links all are on http://www.brownboxbranding.com which redirects to the "non-www" version.
It seems to me like the redirect should be the other way around. i.e. the "non-www" version of your domain should redirect to the "www" version. I would also make sure that Google Webmaster Tools is set to reflect the correct "preferred" domain.
Anyone else see this as the possible problem?

Multiple sitewide (deep)links devalued by Google?
In my experience sitewide links can still be very powerful if used sensibly and in moderation. However, I'm finding that sitewide text blocks with 2 or 3 (deep)links to a single domain appear not to be working that well or not at all in raising the authority of those target pages. Anyone having the same experience? In your experience, is the link value diminished when there are multiple deeplinks to a single domain in a sitewide text area? Is anything more than 1 link per target domain bad? Or could it even be that it's not so much the number of deeplinks to a single domain that matter, but purely the fact that they are sitewide "deeplinks"? Are sitewide deeplinks treated differently than sitewide links linking to an external homepage? Very interested in hearing your personal experience on this matter. Factual experience would be best, but "gut feeling" experience is also appreciated 🙂 Best regards, Joost

My indexed pages count is shrinking in webmaster tools. Is this normal ?
I noticed that our total # of indexed pages dropped recently by a substantial amount (see chart below) Is this normal? http://imgur.com/4GWzkph Also, 3 weeks after this started dropping, we got a message on increased # of crawl errors and found that a site update was causing 300+ new 404s. could this be related ?

How to get around Google Removal tool not removing redirected and 404 pages? Or if you don't know the anchor text?
Hello! I can’t get squat for an answer in GWT forums. Should have brought this problem here first… The Google Removal Tool doesn't work when the original page you're trying to get recached redirects to another site. Google still reads the site as being okay, so there is no way for me to get the cache reset since I don't what text was previously on the page. For example: This: | http://0creditbalancetransfer.com/article375451_influencial_search_results_for_.htm | Redirects to this: http://abacusmortgageloans.com/GuaranteedPersonaLoanCKBK.htm?hop=duc01996 I don't even know what was on the first page. And when it redirects, I have no way of telling Google to recache the page. It's almost as if the site got deindexed, and they put in a redirect. Then there is crap like this: http://aniga.x90x.net/index.php?q=Recuperacion+Discos+Fujitsu+www.articulo.org/articulo/182/recuperacion_de_disco_duro_recuperar_datos_discos_duros_ii.html No links to my site are on there, yet Google's indexed links say that the page is linking to me. It isn't, but because I don't know HOW the page changed text-wise, I can't get the page recached. The tool also doesn't work when a page 404s. Google still reads the page as being active, but it isn't. What are my options? I literally have hundreds of such URLs. Thanks!

Google Web Master Tools: Duplicate Title Tags?
According to Google Web Master Tools it says my site has 910 Duplicate Title Tags. How verbose should title tags be? What's the maximum character length? For example, let's say I have an image of an iPhone 4S being held in someone's hand. How verbose of a title and how many characters am I allowed to have? Is the goal with title tags to be very specific in describing the image? In the above example, do I need to say something like: "iPhone 4S being held by white caucasian male" or will "iPhone 4S" suffice?

Should I report unnatural links via Webmasters?
We have a client who fired their last SEO firm for backlinking. The company has the actual emails and evidence that it found. On July 19, 2012, they received a notice in Webmasters that "unnatural links" had been detected to their site. The notice states that they should request reinclusion, but Matt Cutts is saying something different: https://plus.google.com/u/3/109412257237874861202/posts/gik49G9c5LU My client wants to ensure that they are NOT impacted, so should they notify Google anyways? The notice in Webmasters reads: Dear site owner or webmaster of…. We’ve detected that some of your site’s pages may be using techniques that are outside Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes. We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you’ve made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google’s search results. If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request. If you have any questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support. Sincerely, Google Search Quality Team

Magic keywords in Google Webmaster Tools
Hi All, Recently moved a friend to a new WP back-end website as they were on Flash which is pretty, but not necessarily the best for SEO. http://francesphotography.com My question is that once Google finally indexed the site, I noticed in Google Webmaster tools that it found the most significant keyword to be: automatically On the following top pages: | tag/snow-boarding-photography/ |
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | BoulderJoe
| tag/style-photography/ |
| tag/underwater-photography/ |
| tag/vacation-photography/ |
| tag/wedding-photography-beaver-creek/ |
| tag/wedding-photography-copper-mountain/ |
| tag/wedding-photography-denver/ |
| tag/wedding-photography/ |
| underwater-photography-scuba-diving-cozumel-mexico/ |
| wedding-photography/ | The goofy thing is I can find anywhere that "automatically" is used - perhaps it is coming from a plug-in or magically keyword beans that Google found? Any guidance is appreciated.0
