Huge increase in server errors and robots.txt
-
Hi Moz community!
Wondering if someone can help? One of my clients (online fashion retailer) has been receiving huge increase in server errors (500's and 503's) over the last 6 weeks and it has got to the point where people cannot access the site because of server errors.
The client has recently changed hosting companies to deal with this, and they have just told us they removed the DNS records once the name servers were changed, and they have now fixed this and are waiting for the name servers to propagate again.
These errors also correlate with a huge decrease in pages blocked by robots.txt file, which makes me think someone has perhaps changed this and not told anyone...
Anyone have any ideas here? It would be greatly appreciated! I've been chasing this up with the dev agency and the hosting company for weeks, to no avail.
Massive thanks in advance

Thank you EGOL, all makes perfect sense and I appreciate your reply. I suspect the problems are mostly centered on the hosting issues, with secondary potential robots.txt issues aswell.

....it has got to the point where people cannot access the site because of server errors.
As soon as I would see this I would go straight to someone who knows a lot more about servers than I do. I would start with the host and if I get no help from them within a few hours then I would get someone who knows about servers to dig into this and be ready to quickly move the website to a new host. If the host does not know how to solve it, and I don't know how to solve it. Then it is time for bigger guns and possibly a new host - right away.
....they have just told us they moved the DNS records once the name servers were changed, and they have now fixed this and are waiting for the name servers to propagate again.
So, the website is now in the hands of a new host. It is likely that the problem will be solved here it the old host was the cause of the problem. Today, DNS propagates quickly, I am having my morning coffee... if I don't see progress by the time I return from lunch then I am calling a pro.
I think that it is a good idea for anyone who has clients or an important website to have a person or a company that they can call straightaway for a quick couple of hours of investigation or advice. Two hours of consulting is cheaper than seeing a business throttled for two days.
Also, I have learned to stay away from hosts who offer unlimited bandwidth and similar claims. When you start to become successful you become unprofitable for them so they either have to limit your resources or confess that their claim of unlimited is an absolute lie.
All of my sites are with hosts who charge me for every bit of resource that I use. The more I use, the more money they make and when I have a problem they are motivated to get it fixed immediately - because when my biz is dragging they are making less money. They want me to make money because our interests are in alignment - not the opposite.
Cheap hosts are just as bad as the unlimited guys. If they have a problem with your website it is cheaper to let you go and lose the few bucks a month that you are paying them than it is to pay their staff to fix things. (But they will not tell you to go to a new host - they will just allow you to have crap service until you decided to move.) I make sure that the hosts that I use have a number of high profile sites under their care who will not tolerate one minute of BS. These hosts are not cheap, but I am not interested in cheap, I want reliable.

Will Reducing Number of Low Page Authority Page Increase Domain Authority?
Our commercial real estate site (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) contains about 800 URLs. Since 2012 the domain authority has dropped from 35 to about 20. Ranking and traffic dropped significantly since then. The site has about 791 URLs. Many are set to noindex. A large percentage of these pages have a Moz page authority of only "1". It is puzzling that some pages that have similar content to "1" page rank pages rank much better, in some cases "15". If we remove or consolidate the poorly ranked pages will the overall page authority and ranking of the site improve? Would taking the following steps help?: 1. Remove or consolidate poorly ranking unnecessary URLs?

2. Update content on poorly ranking URLs that are important?
3. Create internal text links (as opposed to links from menus) to critical pages? A MOZ crawl of our site's URLs is visible at the link below. I am wondering if the structure of the site is just not optimized for ranking and what can be done to improve it. URLs with parameters + canonicals + meta robots
Hi Moz community! I'm posting a new question here as I couldn't find specific answer to the case I'm facing. Along with canonical tags, we are implementing meta robots on our pages (e-commerce website with thousands of pages). Most of the cases have been covered but I still have one unanswered case: our products are linked from list pages (mostly categories) but they almost always include a tracking parameter (ie /my-product.html?ref=xxx) products urls are secured with a canonical tag (referring only to the clean url /my-product.html) but what would be the best solution regarding the meta robots? For now we opted for a meta robot 'noindex, follow' for non canonical urls (so the ones unfortunately linked from our category/list pages), but I'm afraid that it could hurt our SEO (apparently no juice is given from URLs with a noindex robots), and even maybe prevent bots from crawling our website properly ... Would it be best to have no meta robots at all on these product urls with parameters? (we obviously can't have 'index, follow' when the canonical ref points to another url!). Thanks for your help!

Disallow URLs ENDING with certain values in robots.txt?
Is there any way to disallow URLs ending in a certain value? For example, if I have the following product page URL: http://website.com/category/product1, and I want to disallow /category/product1/review, /category/product2/review, etc. without disallowing the product pages themselves, is there any shortcut to do this, or must I disallow each gallery page individually?

How to Set Up Canonical Tags to Eliminate Duplicate Content Error
Google Webmaster Tools under HTML improvements is showing duplicate meta descriptions for 2 similar pages. The 2 pages are for building address. The URL has several pages because there are multiple property listings for this building. The URLs in question are: www.metro-manhattan.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan/page/3 www.metro-manhattan.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan How do I correct this error using canonical tags? Do I enter the URL of the 1st page under “Canonical URL” under “Advanced” to show Google that these pages are one and the same? If so, do I enter the entire URL into this field (www.metro-manhattan.com /601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan) or an abbreviated version (/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan)? Please see attached images. Thanks!! Alan rUspIzk 34aSQ7k

Profit from domain authority, while shop hosted on other server
Hi, What if you have a blog and you want to add a shop to your site (like http://blog.com/shop) to profit from the domain autority, but... the shop uses a specific technique that needs to be hosted on an other server? I know a solution when I locate the shop at http://shop.blog.com by changing the DNS settings, but in this case the shop will not profit from the domain autoriry. So,.. is there a technique (maybe also with DNS?) to host the shop on a different location, but for search engines and visitors it looks like it is on the same server? I hope somebody knows a solution...

Best server-side sitemap generators
I've been looking into sitemap generators recently and have got a good knowledge of what creating a sitemap for a small website of below 500 URLs involves. I have successfully generated a sitemap for a very small site, but I’m trying to work out the best way of crawling a large site with millions of URLs. I’ve decided that the best way to crawl such a large number of URLs is to use a server side sitemap, but this is an area that doesn’t seem to be covered in detail on SEO blogs / forums. Could anyone recommend a good server side sitemap generator? What do you think of the automated offerings from Google and Bing? I’ve found a list of server side sitemap generators from Google, but I can’t see any way to choose between them. I realise that a lot will depend on the type of technologies we use server side, but I'm afraid that I don't know them at this time.

Google Re-Index or multiple 301 Redirects on the server?
Over a year ago we moved a site from Blogspot that was adding dates in the URL's (i.e.. blog/2012/08/10/) Additionally we've removed category folders (/category, /tag, etc). Overall if I add all these redirects (from the multiple date options, etc) I'm concerned it might be an overload on the server? After talking with the server team they had suggested using something like 'BWP Google Sitemaps' on our Wordpress site, which would allow Google some time to re-index our site. What do you suggest we do?

400 errors and URL parameters in Google Webmaster Tools
On our website we do a lot of dynamic resizing of images by using a script which automatically re-sizes an image dependant on paramaters in the URL like: www.mysite.com/images/1234.jpg?width=100&height=200&cut=false In webmaster tools I have noticed there are a lot of 400 errors on these image Also when I click the URL's listed as causing the errors the URL's are URL Encoded and go to pages like this (this give a bad request): www.mysite.com/images/1234.jpg?%3Fwidth%3D100%26height%3D200%26cut%3Dfalse What are your thoughts on what I should do to stop this? I notice in my webmaster tools "URL Parameters" there are parameters for:

height
width
cut which must be from the Image URLs. These are currently set to "Let Google Decide", but should I change them manually to "Doesn't effect page content"? Thanks in advance0
