Webmaster Tools HTML Improvements Page Blank / Site Not Ranking Well
-
I have an ecommerce site that is not ranking well currently. It has about 1,000 pages indexed in Google but very few appear to be ranking.
I normally find issues in Webmaster Tools HTML Improvements but for some reason it does not see a problem with the site. There are problems, trust me. Moz shows many issues. Google nothing!
There is a problem somewhere but I am not seeing it. Why are HTML Improvements blank and the site not ranking? Am I in the dreaded sandbox?
Any ideas?
Sean
We didn't detect any content issues with your site. As we crawl your site, we check it to detect any potential issues with content on your pages, including duplicate, missing, or problematic title tags or meta descriptions. These issues won't prevent your site from appearing in Google search results, but paying attention to them can provide Google with more information and even help drive traffic to your site. For example, title and meta description text can appear in search results, and useful, descriptive text is more likely to be clicked on by users.

Hi Sean
In my experience there are always many differences in the crawl reports from Moz and Webmaster Tools. Bear in mind, they are all just computer programs running automatically to detect "issues" - and that a human eye is the best tool at the end of the day.
To step back a little, your overall ranking will likely have very little to do with these sorts of things (titles, descriptions, etc). They can have a small effect but will usually not bump the needle way up. So just keep that in perspective when fixing things.
In general, I would aim to have your titles and descriptions unique, within length guidelines, compelling for users and so on. Google has a great guide here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35624?hl=en
There can sometimes be a delay in what Google shows you in WMT as well. They might not have crawled everything as recently as Moz. I do tend to find Moz will check everything whereas WMT will only alert you to the pages they find are problematic. (For example, you might have pages with duplicate titles, but Google has determined the pages not important - a quality check if you well - whereas Moz doesn't make this qualitative check, they just crawl and rate everything).
In order of priority I would fix WMT issues first and then move to Moz issues. But again, your overall ranking is likely more due to site authority & trust as measured by links and usage.

How to handle blank, auto generated system pages/urls
Hi Guys Our backend system has been creating listing pages based on out of date and irrelevant data meaning we have hundreds of thousands of pages that are blank but currently indexable and active. They're almost impossible to access from the front end and have 0 traffic pointing at them but you can access these pages if you have the URL and i'm pretty sure due to the site architecture, google is crawling them regardless. For the most part, I think its likely best to 301 these pages to the most closely related page on the site but I'm concerned we're wasting crawl budget here. We don't want these pages to be crawled or found. Would a sound solution be to make them inactive, no-index and create a custom 404 in the event anyone (or the crawler) managed to get to them? Would this enormous increase in 404 pages cause us issues? Many thanks

Site hacked and now being spammed and rankings dropping
I have a client's site that was hacked in December and a whole bunch of spam pages were created. We've since removed those pages and they serve a 404 error now. But I pick up a new link almost every day from a another spammy site linking back to the pages that were created. I'm updating the Disavow as I see the new links reported in ahrefs but what else can I do to stop these buggers and how can I recover rankings other than building links and creating content

A/B Testing - Should I add product descriptions on my category landing pages as well as on product pages and if so . how to do this to avoid duplicate content
Hi All, I recently relaunched a new design on my tool hire eCommerce website and now display my products in grid form on my category landing pages as opposed to just a list view which we previously had on the old design. My bounce rates are alot higher than they use to be and my gut instinct is telling me maybe this is wrong . I want to do some a/b testing using a list view. My question is , previously in our list views we just showed the images and pricing and had on page content on the bottom of the page. The user would click on the product image and they would then we taken to the product page which has the product description , t&c, etc etc.. If I was to do this in my a/b testing but change it so we also displayed the product descriptions as well on the category landing pages . Is there a special way to do this as in effect, we would have duplicate content as the product descriptions are also on the product page?. Does anyone have any thoughts on this as to whether its a No No from an SEO point of view ?... Heres a short url link to one of my category pages - http://goo.gl/QJv5gw Historically we use to rank well for the category landing pages and not for the product pages. Our Rankings are down , bounce rates are higher so I am trying to sort both. We have good content on pages etc. Any advice greatly appreciated as always thanks Pete
