How to avoid duplicate title tags?

I've got roughly 1200 location pages for a travel client. Since the business does the same thing at every location, the title tags and descriptions are almost identical except for the location name. I know Google likes tags and meta descriptions to be unique, but how many different ways can I write the same title in a 55 character limit? For example, here's how the titles look:
Things to do in San Jose, CA | Company Name
Things to do in Dallas, TX | Company Name
Things to do in Albuquerque, NM | Company Name**My question: Are 1200 title tags structured this way unique enough for Google? **
I have got the same problem with the meta descriptions, but I can vary those a bit more because i have more characters to work with.

Thanks Anthony and Miriam, this site doesn't really have a lot of unique textual content on the pages. It's sort of a portal site where consumers can download travel brochures in each city. I thought Googlebots might read the pages as duplicate because the pages are mostly images and links. There's a one or two sentence description for each page (brochure) as well as a physical address (NAP), but that's about it for text.
My thought was that since it's all images and links, Google would have very little to crawl and therefore consider all the pages as duplicates, but the Moz crawl is not considering them duplicate pages from what I can tell. Do you think that since the pages are light on textual content that a duplicate content issue could pose a problem?

Agree with Anthony that those are unique and that the main concern here is to be certain that your content on those pages is unique. Definitely a challenge with 1200 pages, but fortunately, there should be totally unique things to do in each of those cities, so it's quite possible to manage this.

The title tags in this example are unique and are fine.
The bigger concern would be if those pages all have unique, valuable and not-thin content as opposed to being created for ranking a variety of keywords.

H1 tag within on top nav but css class styled appear at bottom
Hi, Sorry the similar question could have been ask previously but I couldn't get an exact answer. Someone put a h1 tag on our homepage (which do not have before) and the is within the top nav. But it has a css style class in that h1 tag to make it appear at the bottom of the page so not everyone would be aware of that small h1 title. I personally do not think that's going to help with seo. However I want to know if this practice is going to be: beneficial, or not at all? or harmful instead? Thanks LM

How to check if the website has duplicate content?
I've been working with the websites from couple of months and it was always in my mind if there could be a legit way to find if the website have a duplicate content. I've tried couple of websites through google but nothing worked for me. It would be much appreciated if anyone can help. Thanks

Curious why site isn't ranking, rather seems like being penalized for duplicate content but no issues via Google Webmaster...
So we have a site ThePowerBoard.com and it has some pretty impressive links pointing back to it. It is obviously optimized for the keyword "Powerboard", but in no way is it even in the top 10 pages of Google ranking. If you site:thepowerboard.com the site, and/or Google just the URL thepowerboard.com you will see that it populates in the search results. However if you quote search just the title of the home page, you will see oddly that the domain doesn't show up rather at the bottom of the results you will see where Google places "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 7 already displayed". If you click on the link below that, then the site shows up toward the bottom of those results. Is this the case of duplicate content? Also from the developer that built the site said the following: "The domain name is www.thepowerboard.com and it is on a shared server in a folder named thehoverboard.com. This has caused issues trying to ssh into the server which forces us to ssh into it via it’s ip address rather than by domain name. So I think it may also be causing your search bot indexing problem. Again, I am only speculating at this point. The folder name difference is the only thing different between this site and any other site that we have set up." (Would this be the culprit? Looking for some expert advice as it makes no sense to us why this domain isn't ranking?

Using More Info javascript:toggleDisplay tag for More info text
Is there any harm in using javascript so a user can "toggle" open or closed additional text on a website? For example, if a user wants to read more about something, they can click on "More Info" and the text would then appear. Google is able to read the text, because I chose a random 8 word section of the text within the More Info and pasted it into a Google Search and the website showed up in search results. Just wondering if using this technique would have any negative impact. Here's what the code would look like:

Duplicate H1 tag IF it holds SAME text?
Hello people, I know that majority of SEO gurus (?) claim that H1 tag should only be used once per page. In the landing page design I'm working with, we actually need to repeat our core message stated in H1 & H2 - at the bottom of the page. Now the question is: Can that in any way cause any ranking penalty from big G? In my eyes that is not attempt to over optimize page as it contains SAME info as the H1 & H2 at the top of the page. Confusing, so I'm hope that some SEO gurus here will share some light on this. Thanks in advance!

Penalized by duplicate content?
Hello, I am in a very weird position. I am managing a website(EMD) which a part of it dynamically creates pages. The former webmaster who create this system though that this would help with SEO but I dought! The thing is that now the site has about 1500 pages which must look duplicate but are they really duplicate? Each page has a unique URL but the content is pretty much the same: one image and a different title with 5-8 words. There is more: All these pages are not accessible by the users but only for the crawlers!!! This URL machine is a part of a php - made photo gallery which i never understood the sense of it! The site overall is not performing very well in SERP, especially after Penguin, but judging by the link profile, the Domain authority, construction (ok besides that crazy photo gallery) and content, it never reached the position it should have in the past. The majority of these mysterious pages - and mostly their images - are cached by Google and some of them are in top places to some SERP - the ones that match the small title on page - but the numbers are poor, 10 - 15 clicks per month. Are these pages considered as duplicated, although they are cached, and is it safe for the site just to remove 1500 at once? The seomoz tools have pointed some of them as dups but the majority not! Can these pages impact the image of the whole site in search engines?( drop in Google and has disappeared from Yahoo and Bing!) Do I also have to tell Google about the removal? I have not seen anything like it before so any comment would be helpful! Thank you!

Google changed the title?
I've been reading that Google will sometimes change the home page title, and I have finally seen this in action. Search for and on the second page you'll find but the title says Academy Dog Training. Which is not what's in the title tag for this page. Did Google change the title tag on us and if so why? How can we get them to use our title?

Duplicate Content Problem on Our Site?
Hi, Having read the SEOMOZ guide and already worried about this previously, I have decided to look further into this. Our site is 4-5 years old, poorly built by a rouge firm so we have to stick with what we have for now. Were I think we might be getting punished is duplicate content across various pages. We have a Brands page, link at top of page. Here we are meant to enter each brand we stock and a little write up on that brands. What we then put in these write ups is used on each brands item page when we click a brand name on the left nav bar. Or when we click a Product Type (eg. Footwear) then click on a brand filter on the left. So this in theory is duplicate content. The SEO title and Meta Description for each brand is then used on the Brands Page and also on each page with the Brands Product on. As we have entered this brand info, you will notice that the page www.designerboutique-online.com/all-clothing/armani-jeans/ has the same brand description in the scroll box at the top as the page www.designerboutique-online.com/shirts/armani-jeans/ and all the other product type pages. The same SEO title and same Meta descriptions. Only the products change from each one. This then applies to each brand we have (at least 15) across about 8 pages. All with different URLs but the same text. Not sure how a 301 or rel: canonical would work for this, as each URL needs to point at specific pages (eg. shirts, shorts etc...). Some brands such as Creative Recreation and Cruyff only sell footwear, so technically I think??? We could 301 to the Footwear/ URL rather than having both all-clothing and footwear file paths? This surely must be down to the bad design? Could we be losing valulable rank and juice because of this issue? And how would I go about fixing it? I want a new site, but funds are tight. But if this issue is so big that only a new site would fix it, then maybe the money would need to come forward. What do people make of this? Cheers Will
