Google Signal for Site Speed: PageSpeed ranking, Time To First Byte, or something else?
-
We were having an internal discussion regarding what specific signal Google is looking for regarding Site Speed. My understanding was that Google primarily used Time To First Byte (TTFB) as its signal of Site Speed. My colleague argued that this is not part of Google's PageSpeed Insights (https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/) and therefore was unlikely to be the primary signal. Who is right? Is TTFB the primary signal or the score on PageSpeed Insights?
-
TTFB is server time, spent processing the http request. So you have more than a load of things to look after, in order to improve response time, it largely depends on the technology stack you are using. You may need to review your server side code, your sql queries, your infrastructure.
Anyway more often than not is a matter of poor backend coding.
-
Massimiliano,
You have said 'While I always religiously try to lower TTFB as much as possible.' Can you specify what you actually do which has a direct effect on your TTFB ? -
Thumbs up to Matt on this. The over all load time of the page is what's critical, although several of the suggestions within the PageSpeed tool are aimed at making the first visible content within the page load as quickly as possible.
-
In GWT (Crawl->Crawl Stats) you can find "Time spent downloading a page (in milliseconds)", that's really TTFB.
I have seen few times a correlation between an improvement in TTFB and ranking. So I am convinced TTFB matters a lot.
PageSpeed is a different story, it does analyze a lot more speed factors, mostly client side. It does analyze TTFB too called "Server Response Time" in Page Speed. How these factors impact ranking I don't know. Some like "mobility issues" are officially getting you out of mobile idex if not fixed.
Some of PageSpeed suggestions are even controversial and debated in google own products forum (like suggestions to inline styles and javascripts).
Personally I try to fix as many PageSpeed suggestions as possible, but applying some common sense too. While I always religiously try to lower TTFB as much as possible.

From what I've seen (strictly untested but across hundreds of slow sites which were then sped up) it's the overall time - so the Developer's Tool results, not TTFB. I would argue that most sites that load between 3-6 seconds would improve their overall time through a speed up in TTFB though, so they'd be related. If your site is really in pain (7+ seconds) I don't think you'd make much of an improvement by getting 1st byte faster if it still takes 10 seconds to load.
So ... your colleague would be right as far as my experience goes. We use Developer's Tool & Pingdom and if we improve the overall speed, rankings improve.

Rankings dropped 71% in Google and 65% on Mobile
My rankings just tanked big time. The only problems are #1 Canonical Tags #2 Missing H-1 Tags, #3 URL too long. Are these high priority items now? I just lost a ton of page one rankings after very high rankings for the past 6 years.

Why does some sites rank with no seo
Why is it that some site rank with zero efforts? I have been working on some seo for a while on my main site and i have been getting more info competition analysis with sem and moz. Looking at the states from this website which tends to popup often in the searches on page 1-2 before my site. This site is not keyword optimized, meaning they arent even trying to rank.

There is no content, articles etc.,
6 backlinks (nothing powerful just 2 directory links and 2 from developer)
Site really isnt even designed to get traffic as its a trade only ecommerce website
I doubt they are hiding anything as far as backlinks etc. as it will get them too many visitors they dont want
The city i am searching isnt even on the page (it is a city within a city so maybe google still relates it)
PA 24 DA 15 Now my site:
Optimized reasearched keywords
175 backlinks
All my main pages have content with images, alt tags, internal linking
full of content, blogs, videos, products (probably 4000, could a site being too big be an issue?)
Site gets regular updates
I probably have 200 citations
All the social media which gets done often
PA 32 DA 20 They do get a good bit of traffic but that is probably the only thing i would see but it would be direct traffic mostly i believe as it would be people going to order regularly since it is a print reseller. They may have some age on me 15 vs 8 years. Could it be some kind of penalty i am not sure about lingering? According to what i know to check everyything looks ok, no shady links accoding to sem. I am working more and more on all the pages but this competittion site really doesnt have crap going on probably 8 pages and 1 page does all the ordering. What the hell does google want from me exactly!0 -
Google Rankings Are Dancing What To Do?
I was been ranking on page no.3 for many of my keywords. Suddenly they all dropped to Page No.9& Page no.10. Now 10 days back one of my keyword got back to page no.4 & now suddenly today it went back to page no.9 again. I haven't done any changes to the site. My page speed is less than 4secs. Checked everything & all seems fine. No errors or manual actions notification in Webmaster too. Should i wait for the rankings dance to get over or should i start doing something. Currently i am planning to get fresh pages with good content added to the website for the whole month of July. Suggest me what to do?

Site Speed, is it worth it from a SEO point?
Hi, I understand a site which loads quickly is greater for the user but how does site speed affect rankings? I mean does Google log the speed pages load, the faster it loads the better the signal? So say I have a page which loads in 1.5sec would Google 'Rate' the site better if it loaded in say 0.8sec? Thanks.

Is it normal to initially rank low in the SERPs, then over time gain rank?
We just released a very targeted page for a specific item about 18 hours ago. For the main keyword as well as multiple variations, we currently are ranking around # 40 to # 50 depending on what the exact query is. Is it normal to initially rank lower in the SERPs and then as the page ages, gain? Thank you for your insights!

Why is my client's site not ranking anymore? Like big time!
Ok, I'm reaching out to all of you Moz'rs for some help with this one. My client's site has dropped off the face of google in a real short period of time. It went from page 1 (avg rank 3 to page 6 (avg rank 50) and below in the matter of 2 weeks. Here's some facts: 1. DA is a 22 and homepage PA is a 31. It outranks all other sites in its competitive set. 2. The homepage used to be the page that displays for keyword searches, now its the FAQ page, which has a lower PA of 23. Why has the home page seemingly vaporized? And, why is the FAQ showing as the first result? What should I start checking. I feel paralyzed, not sure where to start. More info: a. There are no alerts present in Webmaster Tools. b. For some reason the homepage (domain.com) was 301'd to domain.com/home.html. Domain.com is indexed by Google, however, domain.com/home.html is not. If this is the issue, what is the best way to handle it? Thanks in advance for your help!

How to resubmit a Web 2.0 site to Google?
I have 3 web 2.0 sites that look like theyve been hit by a penalty. I have checked their backlinks and there are a lot of backlinks from sites that have been deindexed. I have requested the removal of lots of the links, but now I need to resubmit the site to Google. Is this even possible with them being a web 2.0 site? I don't have webmaster tools for the site so how would I do this?

How can we get a site reconsidered for Google indexing?
We recently completed a re-design for a site and are having trouble getting it indexed. This site may have been penalized previously. They were having issues getting it ranked and the design was horrible. Any advise on how to get the new site reconsidered to get the rank where it should be? (Yes, Webmaster Tools is all set up with the sitemap linked) Many thanks for any help with this one!
