Best strategy to follow for a single service site
-
Can anyone share what they feel is the best strategy to follow for a single service site?
Would you optimise and target the homepage for the primary service they offer or target a page one level lower and leave the homepage to target the Brand name?
Links to any references or case studies would also be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Great addition of Jonathan! I also think a well implemented example will not get affected by this update but identical pages won't do you much good in the future. So if you start with this strategy, make sure you do it good!

As a word of caution to this, Google is updating its doorway page algorithm. I am not sure if this will affect a well implemented example of this strategy, although I would be surprised if it did (i.e. very unique content with text relevant to each location), but I think it will be designed if you use identical pages with just different location names then there is a real risk.
See: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/an-update-on-doorway-pages.html
Ultimately it won't be fully known until it is implemented, if it hasn't already.

Hi OLLI_M,
I would definitely focus your homepage on the keywords / search intents for your primary keyword. This page is your best change of scoring in your own city and has the possiblility to score in city’s close by.
You don’t have to worry about scoring on your brand because:
- When people search for your brand name they want you. So from an search engines perspective you’re the 100% match with this search intent and you will have a great dwell time and CTR which work in your favor.
- You will probably get enough inbound links with your brand name in it. That’s very natural.
There are probably a lot more reasons why you will score on your own brand name but I hope these make it clear you don’t have to worry about it.
When you determine your website structure you will probably need some insights in the following:
- Are people adding local modifiers like “Car service [city name]”
- What is the search volume on those keywords? Based on this, are there any more city’s in your service area you intent to rank on besides the city you’re located?
- What is the competition on the keywords you intent to rank on?
In a normal situation where you have one physical location and you serve a couple more nearby city’s I would advise you to focus your homepage on the city you’re based in and add level one pages for the city’s in your service area you intent to rank for. Make sure these pages are added to your normal navigation and are interesting for visitors who do either enter your website through your homepage as directly through the local landings pages.
Miriam wrote a great guide for creating those service area’s on Moz. You might want to check it out: http://moz.com/blog/local-landing-pages-guide
You can also check out this project we have been working on some time ago: www.skaya.nl (Dutch website).
When you click on “Waar rijden wij” you will find a list of the city’s they give driving lessons. Every page has some unique tips and information about driving lessons in those specific city’s. In this case we also added the city we’re based in as a level one page. So either our homepage as the local landings page can score on the city were based in.
Two more great resources when you want to start local SEO I would love to share with you:
- http://moz.com/blog/11-ways-local-businesses-can-get-links
I hope this helps!
PS. When you look at the example there are two improvements for this website. The tabbed content should be shown immediately and there should be less duplicated content like the prices for example. Just so you don’t copy the wrong parts of this tactic

Is single H1 tag still best practice?
Hi Guys, Is having a single h1 tag still best practice for SEO? Guessing multiple h1 tags dilute the value of the tag and keywords within the tag. Thoughts? Cheers.

Subdomained White-Label Sites
Wanted to pass along a specific use-case that I'm thinking through in the technical setup for a client. Site: http://www.abc.com is an ecommerce company that offers the ability to white-label a site so an affiliate can join and get access to the site, and ultimately get a cut of whatever is sold through that affiliate. So I join the site and get access to scott.xyz.com and can handle my business through that. From a technical standpoint, this is the proposed technical setup of the site. Canonical URLS will be set to www.xyz.com Pages on scott.xyz.com will be set to noindex, while the main www.xyz.com will be set to be indexed Webmaster Tools for scott.xyz.com will be set to have preferred domain of www.xyz.com scott.xyz.com will have separate robots.txt instructing to block crawl Questions Am I missing any steps in properly setting up the technical background of the subdomain sites? The use of subdomains isn't something that I am able to move away from. Will any links in to scott.xyz.com pass juice and authority to www.xyz.com, or does the noindex/nocrawl block that from happening? Is there anything else that I am missing? Thanks!

ECommerce website with link to manufactures site for ordering - Should these links be follow or no follow?
Dear Mozzers, I have a couple of questions regarding link juice and whether I should have do follow or no follow links ? We have an affiliate eCommerce website and on our product pages we have a "Order online " button which will go our subdomain on the manufactures site in order for the user to complete the online ordering process So it's - www.ourcompany.co.uk - "Order Online Button" - www.manufactuer.ourcompany.co.uk Should this " Order online Button" be a Follow or No Follow link ? I ask this as currently from looking at Majestic seo , these "order online " buttons on my product pages seems to be Follow links so am I losing potential link juice by sending it externally ? Am I correct in assuming by changing it to be no follows, I would increase the link juice going elsewhere internally? thanks Pete

Site Structure: How do I deal with a great user experience that's not the best for Google's spiders?
We have ~3,000 photos that have all been tagged. We have a wonderful AJAXy interface for users where they can toggle all of these tags to find the exact set of photos they're looking for very quickly. We've also optimized a site structure for Google's benefit that gives each category a page. Each category page links to applicable album pages. Each album page links to individual photo pages. All pages have a good chunk of unique text. Now, for Google, the domain.com/photos index page should be a directory of sorts that links to each category page. Alternatively, the user would probably prefer the AJAXy interface. What is the best way to execute this?

Best Practice for ALT tags of flags to interlink multinational site
For a partial keyword match domain name what would you recommend as ALT tag to internlink country domains (different CCTLD)? Option 1)
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
DOMAIN.com DOMAIN.de DOMAIN.co.uk => I am a bit concerned about this option in terms of potential penalty for keywords in ALT (since partial match domains) Option 2)

Francais France => concerned here about mixing lots of languages in ALT tags in each page, which may confuse google language detection.0 -
Redirection strategy for mobile site
Hello folks! I am just about to launch a mobile specific version of our website. We were not able to make the main site responsive so have decided to make a seperate copy on an m dot subdomain. I have kept the url structure identical between both sites and added a canonical url on the mobile pages pointing to the desktop site. I will detect and redirect all mobile devices and googlebot mobile crawler to the m dot site. The questions i have are as follows... Is that the best approach if you use a mobile specific site on a seperate subdomain? What type of redirects should i use to send mobile users (and googlebot mobile) to the mobile site? My mobile site does not have all the pages the desktop site has. What happens if i redirect a mobile user from a page on the desktop site to a page on the mobile site that does not exist? (will give 404 currently). I guess i could maintain a list of valid mobile urls but this would be a pain (and a bit of an overhead) Your help is most appreciated Regards

Two Sites Similar content?
I just started working at this company last month. We started to add new content to pages like http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/49/-/181/1137/Bridgestone-Motorcycle-Tires. This is their main site. Then i realized it also put the new content on their sister site http://www.jakewilson.com/t/52/-/343/1137/Bridgestone-Motorcycle-Tires. the first site is the main site and I think will get credit for the unique new content. The second one I do not think will get credit and will more than likely be counted as duplicate content. We are changing this so it will no longer be the same. However, I am curious to see ways people think we could fix this issues? Also is it effecting both sits for just the second one?
