Is my canonicalisation harmful?
-
Hi,
My site appears to be under a Google penalty. We've had an SEO guy assess the site for us and the working hypothesis is that we are under a Panda penalty for duplicate content. The site is 4 years old and we have never had any success in ranking well for just any none branded keywords. The vacation rental market is highly competitive and we have found ranking for relevant keywords extremely difficult. For just about every keyword that i am tracking we are below 50.
We sell vacation rentals. We have ~1500 rental listing pages. Much of the descriptive text content for those pages has been taken from other vacation rental sites. I should add that this same content is used by many vacation rental websites also; we're all trying to sell the same listings. We have started rewriting the the text content for the listings but as there are 1500 of them it is a slow process.
We have listings in 26 different countries. Each country has it's own landing page.
As an experiment our SEO guy recommended that we canonicalise each listing that belongs to a specific region towards it's regional landing page to see if we receive more direct traffic and begin to rank more highly for keywords. So www.mydomain.com/villa-in-barbados-1, www.mydomain.com/villa-in-barbados-2, etc all point to www.mydomain.com/barbados as the canonical version of the content.
We haven't really seen much improvement in organic traffic and, although we are ranking for more branded keywords we are not seeing much elevation ranking for other keywords.
Is this the right way to go about it? The content in the landing pages is significantly different from those pages that have been canonicalised towards them.
Cheers

Yes, it is an important thing to consider, because Googlers repeatedly told that if the canonicalized page and the canonical are very different, then Google may not take into account the canonicalization.

Hi Ikkie,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. My canonical tags are semantically correct and the pages towards which they point are unique. I should probably rephrase my question. Does it matter that the pages towards which the villa listings are canonicalised are significantly different from the villa/product pages that point to them?
My understanding is that the purpose canonicalisation is to alert search engines to the fact that there are multiple versions of the same content and that a particular page of content should be regarded as the authoritative version. In my case; the content pages that are canonicalised are quite different from the product pages that point towards it. In this case; would Google pay attention to the canonical tag?

Hi
In my opinion, first think you need to make sure your canonical tags are asp er required standard (Best Pracise for canonicalization).
The next step you must update content again and wait to be index by search engines. We have similar situation earlier last year. It took little time but we got our client site back to track.
Bear in mind, you all landing pages must be unique specially vila's description pages.

So I am trying to figure out how my google rankings dropped from 3 to 9 This past week. Could it be the new HTTPS security issue? My site was created in HTTP not HTTPS. Is this an easy fix? Can I hire someone on this site to fix this?

Wordpress Tag Organization Tips
Curious if anyone has some good examples of ways to organize your WordPress tags without making your sidebar a football field long and hard to navigate. My blog is https://karmahill.com/blog and I could use some ideas. We have main categories of photo shoot types, for example, "Couples", located on the sidebar. We want to add tags to go with those main categories for further categorization and user experience example: Couples Engagement Proposals Honeymoon Maternity My question is, do I need to make "tag" pages for those posts to reside on or is their another way to get it done with less work, that is much faster? I don't want to have to make 30 tag pages or is that just what you have to do?

Thinking about redesigning site to reduce bounce rate - have a couple of questions
BACKGROUND Im looking at redesigning the website for a creative consultancy to improve the user experience. The website is mainly an image portfolio along with “press”, “our services”, “about us”, “contact” pages. I originally designed the website a few years ago and when we did, we wanted to make the image portfolio the most important feature. So we made it a full screen JS image slider with lazy loading of images, so that there are about 40 full screen images on the homepage that rotate. From a users point of view i still feel this is the best system as it very quickly allows them to browse the portfolio, which we looking for a creative consultancy is their UPS (unique selling point). The site has a very strong backlink profile compared to its competitors in the SERPS it has about 20-25% increase in PA and DA. But our site has been slipping down the rankings in recent years / months. From spot 1-2 to about spot 5-7. MY HYPOTHESIS I think that the reason the site may be dropping back in the SERP is that although its a very usable site, all its portfolio information is “too easy to find / view” and results in a user coming to our site, seeing everything they need to see, then bouncing back to the SERP. Our site has a bounce rate of 40-60%. Where as on competitors sites, their “portfolio” is a separate page off the homepage, so a users has to click through to a separate page, and even if they don't like the design content of the portfolio it doesn't get logged as a bounce. MY QUESTION Does bounce rate affect SERP ranking ? Could the sites SERP performance be improved by redesigning the site to put the portfolio on a separate page so a user would have to click through to it, if that would get the bounce rate down, would the site see a benefit even if people still clicked back to the SERP results eventually after seeing our portfolio, even though it wasn't a true 1 page bounce ? Dose time on site affect SERP ranking ? Is there a way i can see a competitor's bounce rate ? Would welcome any other thoughts inputs on this matter.

Payment Options in Footer
Hi Moz Community. I'm currently working on cleaning up a website footer on an e-commerce site. I was curious to find out if including payment options is important? Either text or image icons. Including Visa, AMEX etc. Are there benefits of displaying them? Image attached. Thanks vcdoL

When Site:Domain Search Run on Google, SSL Error Appears on One URL, Will this Harm Ranking
Greetings MOZ Community: When a site:domain search is run on Google, a very strange URL appears in the search results. The URL is http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com:2082/ The page displays a "the site's security certificate is not trusted." This only appears for one URL out of 400. Could this indicate a wider problem with the server's configuration? Is this something that needs to be corrected, and if so how? Our ranking has dropped a lot in the last few months. Thanks,

Does it do harm if you add a rel="canonical" tag on a page that doesn't need it?
If a page is clearly unique and there is obviously no canonical tag needed, does it hurt anything if one has been added?
