Different results & page layout in Google local for plurals?
-
I realize that the general results websites can rank differently for singular vs plural keywords, but today when checking local rankings for a client, I noticed that not only does the client rank differently for "church in San Diego" vs "churches in San Diego" but the layout and info of the local results pages are different.
"Church in San Diego" (screenshot) shows the phone number and has links for Website and Directions
"Churches in San Diego" (screenshot) doesn't show any of that instead has an image. If you click on the image, it brings up a card almost like a popup with info, reviews, and links for the organization.
Anyone ever noticed that before? Anyone know why the difference? And if there are different optimization strategies?

Hey Kurt,
I'm able to replicate exactly what you are seeing, Kurt. I'm in CA. so, this might potentially influence the results I'm seeing vs. what Ira is seeing.
I have seen both versions of the Local Finder view, but am not clear on what Google is doing with the test of both versions, and I'd never noticed before this difference of versions being triggered by plural vs. singular results. I'm actually doing some other searches now (shoe store vs. shoe stores, dentist vs. dentists with city modifiers) and I am NOT able to replicate the singular vs. plural difference you discovered with the church search.
What I do see is that, for that church search, the radius of the results appears to be the same, and that it's quite interesting that Google is only showing reviews for the singular search. Sorry not to have more insight on this, but it definitely looks like good old Google testing things out for the search you've been doing. Could change by the time you wake up tomorrow.
It makes me realize that I'd like to see a post on differences like this in the Local Finder view. I can't recall seeing one. Thanks for raising the question.

That's odd that you're seeing different results than I am. I did searches for church(es) in two other cities and saw the same thing - website and description links for church, image for churches. I also tried it with plumber(s) in 3 cities and both plumber and plumbers had website and description. Then I tried it for restaurant(s) in 3 cities and both restaurant and restaurants had the image/icon. Strange.
I'd be curious to hear what others are seeing in their local results.

Interesting, must be a new thing Google is doing, showing the thumbnail instead of the website and directions icons. When I try the same 2 searches, I get the thumbnail view for both. I also am seeing that style for all the other local searches I'm doing. Maybe you caught those 2 searches while the changes were being rolled out? I'm curious if you are still seeing the icons on any searches.
As for optimization issues, this makes it more important than ever to claim your Google Business listing and to optimize it with good photos.

Star rating not showing up in local pack, and knowledge panel pulling in healthgrades
Hello, I have a client that when you Google just their business name a couple of odd things are happening. First off, they show up in the map pack, but it's now showing their review rating. They have 29 reviews, with an average star rating of 4.6, but at first glance, it doesn't look like they have any reviews:

Domain now being used for a different purpose (how to deal with previous links!)
I managed to snap up a domain last October that was previously being used by people to create online resumes. On this domain I have created a site that allows businesses to have a short web address that they then use to send their customers to. This short address displays a list of review sites that the customers can choose from to leave a review on the business, ie GMB, Facebook (basically any established reviews site) etc.

The problem I have is that there are so many old links that are pointing to the site referencing the previous resume business and I have three issues: Many people blindly sign up thinking it’s the resume business because they read it on another site who’s link they followed. The sites that list my domain are mainly job or resume related sites. I have the previous business customers still with their personalised links leading back to the site that I currently 404. The site in question is https://re.vu Any assistance or advice would be gratefully received.1 -
Review stars dropped off in Google from Rich Snippets (started in October '17 - Jan '18 timeframe)
Our review stars from Rich Snippets are not showing up in Google for Novus products. I believe these are structured correctly or at least there are no errors. We have tried to troubleshoot on our own and asked multiple SEO'er's and partners, but have not had success. Turning to MOZ! They were there in September/October timeframe but dropped off in October to January timeframe. example URL: https://www.google.com/search?q=hif+1+alpha+antibody&oq=hif+1+alpha+antibod (It seems to be off all products); This started in October to January time frame so was before the latest algo update.

Snap Pack & Yelp/Angie's list Page authority
Hey gang, First off thank you for any advice. I know we are all busy trying to make our money so I really appreciate everyone who chimes in. Links to studies and articles are also much appreciated. So. I am by no mean an SEO expert, I prefer to dabble in outreach and authentic link building campaigns. So you can imagine my frustration when I pull off a successful campaign, get about 4 or 5 great real links, raise in organic, but don't budge on the maps. I have noticed something. 1. My competition's yelp page has a couple more reviews than me (btw it's a locksmith site, I know it's a rather spammy industry, I don't do black hat...) BUT their yelp Page Authority is like 46! Same thing with their angies list, BBB, etc etc. MINE IS 1 across the board. Now I know the internet is changing. There is usually no reason for a locksmith site to have a viral blog. Google is looking toward more Citation based authority for local ranking factors. (Or at least that's what they say, I feel like their algorithm is not yet advanced enough to catch all the spammers.) So I am going to have an ethics meeting with my company and make sure we are alwyas treating our customers fabulously as well as sometimes intentionally asking for a review, not just on google, but across all of our web 2.0 platforms. BUT How do I get MY page authority on these directories higher? By back linking to them? DO you guys think these companies actually had campaigns to get links to these directories? Did they just PBN em'? Am I stuck in 2013!? Much love guys.

Reusing reviews from other sites for branded rich snippet taken from brands testimonial page
Hi my customer has had a new website built for their custom home building company which has a testimonials page http://www.precisionhomes.com.au/testimonials.html This testimonials page has duplicate review content taken from another dedicated review site http://www.productreview.com.au/p/precision-homes.html My question is this, if I add review microdata to http://www.precisionhomes.com.au/testimonials.html will google recognize this in Rich snippets and the Brands Knowledge Graph or will it just consider it duplicate content?

Why are certain words formatted as bold in Google+ Reviews?
Hey guys, I noticed that certain words within reviews left on Google+ pages are being shown in bold text. The original reviews do not feature bold text, but when shown in snippets they appear. I attached a photo below for a college's G+ page. Any insight would be great! 0ZHfhnP

Google Places
Hi Guys, Looking for some advice on improving the visibility of my Google Local Page for non-brand local keyword terms. I want my listing to rank for local keyword terms “sydney cars” “cars in sydney” and related terms. I know reviews play a key role and citations. We have created many citations in multiple different directories (yelp, truelocal, etc) but still have not yet seen much movement or results. In this case should I be building links to the actual website BMW Sydney with various/high diversified anchor text around “sydney cars” “cars in sydney” "luxury cars" and variations and continue building authority to this website. Image of the search results:
