What's the best way to sort canonicals on duplicate product pages generated from products being in more than one category in a Magento web store?

Hi Kerry,

Magento handles this very well by default when you simply enable canonical tags.

It canonicalizes all product URLs (no matter how many categories they are in) to the root level.

Eg. for the following product URLs:

www.site.com/category1/product-name/

www.site.com/category2/product-name/

www.site.com/category3/product-name/

Would all canonicalize to:

www.site.com/product-name/

I've worked on many large Magento sites and this has always worked very well and I've never seen an issue with it.

Hello! We are an online marketplace that submitted our sitemap through Google Search Console 2 weeks ago. Although the sitemap has been submitted successfully, out of ~10000 links (we have ~10000 product pages), we only have 25 that have been indexed. Hi there, A number of our URLs are being de-indexed by Google. When looking into this using Google Search Console the same message is appearing on multiple pages across our sites: 'Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical' 'IndexingIndexing allowed? Product Listings - is it worth indexing the whole product catalogue?

I'm working on a site that has around 500 product listings. This is for a rental company without any sort of ecommerce platform, so, there's no prices, no adding a product to a cart, etc. Also, there are no different sizing / color options for each product, so each product is the canonical version. After some restructuring, we're starting to see a lot of 404s and just some general mess. I have a couple of thoughts. My first is to just noindex each product. We hardly get any direct traffic to an individual product page, and if they land anywhere related to products, it's usually a category page. If I noindex the products, I don't have to worry about the 404s. My second is to implement the rel=canonical tag on each product to correspond to its primary category. While this is sort of liberal use of the canonical tag, I'm thinking that it could help drive more organic traffic to the category pages. Does anyone have any insight or thoughts on this? Why are my Duplicated Pages not being updated?

I've recently changed a bunch of duplicated pages from our site. I did get a slightly minimized amount of duplicated pages, however, some of the pages that I've already fixed are still unfixed according to MOZ. Whenever I check the back-end of each of these pages, I see that they've already been changed and non of them are the same in terms of Meta Tag Title is concern. Can anyone provide any suggestions on what I should do to get a more accurate result? Is there a process that I'm missing?

Dealing with closely related pages

I have a book with 8 pages which I offer free on my site: http://www.pottytrainingchart4kids.com/free-potty-training-book/ For technical reasons each of the 8 pages are on a seperate page. This might cause thin content/duplicate content since most of the code is the same besides the images and there isn't much on each page. How would you suggest I deal with this? I remember once reading about rel prev or something like that but I am not sure if it is applicable. I would like all page rank to go to the main page. Should I add no index to the other pages? I am not really sure what I should do to prevent a Panda penalty. Thanks in advance!

Best practice for rich snippet product data - which page shows up?

We have a website with thousands of pages that rank locally for a specific service we offer. What I'd like to do is add rich snippets to these pages. I'd like to setup the services we offer as 'products' in the rich snippets, so that our 2 services show up below the url as rich snippets. I guess I'm not sure if the markup is supposed to be on the product page itself, or if I should use the offerurl tag, to create a separate page on the site whose only purpose is to have a long list of the services we offer pointing to the local pages as the offer url's. What do I do with this page? what are best practices for this offer aggregator? Are there any resources I can look at? Am I even doing this right? I'm new to having markup pages, and I'm hoping that the markup code doesn't actually need to be on the product offer page itself, but that the product offer page is the one that shows up on the results - that is my last question actually - which page will show up? the offerurl link, or the actual markup page.
