301 Redirects - 4 sites into 1
-
Hey all,
I have an SEO conundrum that seems to have no right or wrong answer. If you have 2 minutes I’d love to hear your opinion.
The Situation
Our client has 4 ecommerce sites (Sites A, B, C & D) all selling the same products.
He wishes to to merge all 4 sites into a single site (Site A)Options
In order to maintain maximum SEO authority do we:A - Choose a single site (B, C, or D) with the most SEO authority/juice/power and 301 re-direct it into Site A
Or
B – 301 re-direct all 3 sites (B, C & D) into Site AOur experience says that 301’ing from a single site works well, but from multiple sites feels spammy and risky.
Really keen too hear your thoughts.

Not to muddy the waters, but I have had a client with sites (2) going after the same keyword set -- my first thought was to condense them into one through a 301 strategy towards the "stronger" domain. For a myriad of non-SEO reasons, this didn't happen in a short timeframe and we ended up really glad it didn't. Our SEO efforts for domain A were helping domain B through some inter-linking we were doing and today (1.5~ years later) the sites are ranking #2 and #3 for hundreds of the same keywords. We actually spent some time removing some of those links between domains as many were using exact-match anchor text and did not any major losses in traffic to either domain.
In general I'd say that having one single site is better from a content management, link building and branding perspective. However, I do not feel that is blanket advice anymore. Perhaps the best strategy here is to redirect the "worst" performing domain into site A and carefully keep an eye on your rankings/traffic, then slowly phase in the other sites over time. I'd also be cautious about 301'ing many sites into a valuable site all at once as you may lose out on traffic.
If the keywords overlap and you have more than one site ranking, I'd think about perhaps consider leaving the "second best" site up for a few months to see how it performs. You may be happy with the results.

Hi Pamela! Great question here. I dealt with something similar a few years ago with an ecommerce client.
I love that your client is thinking about consolidating all of the products under one brand. From a pure branding perspective, and also ease of updating and lowering technical overhead, this definitely makes sense. Right now they're spread across a bunch of sites and there is likely no cohesive brand. And if you're doing good SEO and thus content marketing and building links, you are dividing your effort by 4 or he is paying 4x what he needs to in order to have his business where he wants it to be.
It's also an interesting question to me because of this - even if you ranked 1-4 for all 4 of his sites (which is honestly unrealistic), would he be making more money than having one site where all the attention is focused to convert as many people as possible? I have to believe that having one site is best, though you'll need to honestly do the math on how much traffic all of the sites are getting and if you can honestly get that same amount on just 1 site.
If you are going to consolidate them, your option B is the one I would go with. Redirect sites B, C, & D into site A, making sure you are doing 1:1 301 redirects. I don't see this as being spammy at all to be completely honest with you - your client owns all 4 sites and it consolidating them. It may take some time for the search engines to honor all of the 301s, but this feels like exactly the use case a 301 is meant for.
Hope that helps.
John

Hi Chris
Thanks for your response.
Do you feel that 301 re-directing all 3 sites into 1 is a viable solution? Are there any pitfalls to be aware of?
Our client has circa 3000 products on site.
Thank you!

Hi Pamela,
I'd lean toward redirecting the other sites to the one that currently carries the most power, assuming that site is also producing the best UX and engagement metrics (bounce rate, conversion rate etc). Rankings and user metrics typically go hand in hand but it's worth double-checking.
As for how to do the redirect, this is where it becomes more of a grey area because there are so many variables so it depends on your situation. Ultimately all pages that are receiving direct or referral traffic should be redirected to the equivalent page on the strongest site so those users will still arrive at the right product rather than just the home page.
The reason it's not that simple is because you might have 300,000 products with 60% of those getting direct/referral traffic so identifying these and getting the 301s set up would take a considerable amount of time and if done via htaccess, that's a lot of entries to be parsed on page load which isn't great for site speed. Alternatively, you might only have 5 or 6 of these pages in which case the site speed difference would be immeasurable and setting it up would take a matter of minutes.
Apologies for the somewhat vague response but hopefully it points you in the right direction.

Hundreds of 301 Redirects. Remove Pages or Not?
Hi Mozers, I have a website that has literally got hundreds of 301 redirects. I had a close look at these URLs and only some of them have backlinks to it and remaining all of them are not indexing in Google and has got not backlinks at all. Based on what I have noticed experts mentioning, loads of 301 redirects can potentially slow down the site speed. In a case like the website I have, should I completely take off the pages from website to reduce the number of 301 redirects or should I leave 301 redirects? There is no traffic or backlinks coming from these URLs. Malika

Several 301 Redirects to Same Page
Hi, I have 3 Pages we won't use anymore in our website. Let's call them url A, url B and url C. To keep their SEO strength on our domain, I've though about redirecting all of them to url D. For what I understand, when 301 redirecting, about 85-90% of the link SEO juice is passed. Then, if I redirect 3 URLs to the same page... does url D receive all the link SEO juices for URLs added up? (approximately)
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | viatrading1
e.g. future url D juice = 100% current url D juice + 85% url A juice + 85% url B juice + 85% url C juice Is this the best practice, or is there a better way? Cheers,0 -
Clarity needed on 301 redirects
Looking to get a bit of clarity on redirects: We're getting ready to launch a new website with a simplified url structure (we're consolidating pages & content) & I already know that I'll have to employ 301 redirects from the old url structure to the new. What I'm not clear about is how specifc I should be. Here's an example of my file structure: Old website: www.website.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | JSimmons17
New website: www.website.com Old website: www.website.com/vacations
New website: www.website.com/vacations Old website: www.website.com/vacations/costa-rica
New website: www.website.com/vacations/central-america Old website: www.website.com/vacations/costa-rica/guanacaste
New website: www.website.com/vacations/central-america Old website: www.website.com/vacations/mexico
New website: www.website.com/vacations/central-america Old website: www.website.com/vacations/mexico/cancun
New website: www.website.com/vacations/central-america Old website: www.website.com/vacations/bolivia
New website: www.website.com/vacations/south-america Old website: www.website.com/vacations/bolivia/la-paz
New website: www.website.com/vacations/south-america Do I need to redirect each and every page or would just redirecting just the folder be enough to keep my SEO juice? Many thanks in advance for any help!0 -
Will using 301 redirects to reduce duplicate content on a massive scale within a domain hurt the site?
We have a site that is suffering a duplicate content problem. To help resolve this we intend to reduce the amount of landing pages within the site. There are a HUGE amount of pages. We have identified the potential to reduce the pages by half at first by combing the top level directories, as we believe they are semantically similar enough that they no longer warrant being seperated.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Silkstream
For instance: Mobile Phones & Mobile Tablets (Its not mobile devices). We want to remove this directory path and 301 these pages to the others, then rewrite the content to include both phones and tablets on the same landing page. Question: Would a massive amount of 301's (over 100,000) cause any harm to the general health of the website? Would it affect the authority? We are also considering just severing them from the site, leaving them indexed but not crawlable from the site, to try and maintain a smooth transition. We dont want traffic to tank. Has anyone performed anything similar? Id be interested to hear all opinions. Thanks!0 -
Redirecting one site to another for link juice
I have two sites with same theme - buying cars. I am going remove one of the sites from being crawled permenantly (ie junkthecars.com) and point domian via 301, to another similar theme site (sellthecars.com). The purpose is to simply pass the SEO link juice from one site to the other as we retire junkthecars.com.... Is a forwarding of the domain OK and the best way for the search engines to increase the rank of sellthecars.com (we hate to wast the link work done on Junkthecars.com)? What dangers should I look for that could hurt sellthecars.com if we do the redirect at a simple TLD?

How to do a 301 redirect for url's with this structure?

My site penalized after 301 Redirect or redesign?
Hi, I have a question regarding my site (http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com) that has, all of a sudden, lost rankings on several keywords; plus, Google Analytics and the plug-in Clicky installed on my site (the site is built on WordPress) claim that my site has no visitors/visits anymore. I would like to provide a little background of what has happened. Three weeks ago I asked my web hosting company to do a 301 redirect from http://pokeronlineitalia.com to http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com. At the same time I asked a web hosting company to to a redesign of the site. Strangely, the day after the new redesigned site went online Google Analytics and the Clicky plug-in showed that my site, from one day to the other, had no visitors/visits anymore (I had installed Google Analytics and Clicky before the 301 redirect). In addition, I noticed that I had lost positions on many keywords for which I used to rank on the second page. However, the PR of the site has remained intact and Google is indexing it without problems. Plus, I still rank high for a keyword. I tend to believe that because of this, my site was not penalized by mighty Google...but I'd like an SEO expert to tell me what he thinks about it. In particular, please answer this: has my site lost rankings because of the 301 redirect? Has my site been penalized because of the redesign? Is this only a temporary situation? Thank you very much for your help. Sal

Open Site Explorer not Seeing 301 Redirect to non-www
I cannot figure out why open site explorer doesn't see that when you go to http://preferredroofingkc.net/ it redirects to http://www.preferredroofingkc.net/ This is a wordpress installation that uses a cannonical url http://www.preferredroofingkc.net/ The HTACCESS file also has a 301 redirect as follows: RewriteEngine On
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | RobertFisher
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^preferredroofingkc.net [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.preferredroofingkc.net/$1 [L,R=301] But, open site explorer still shows these sites separately without alerting that there is a 301 redirect.0
