Best Practices for Creating Back Links from "Thought Leader" Content

What is the best way to use articles from a "thought leader" to build high-quality links to my website?
I have heard that it is possible to pay bloggers to post business articles that link back to a website. That assuming these blogs have domain authority this is a good technique to improve ranking. Is this in fact true, and if so where would I find blogs to post our content. The purpose would be to promote real estate brokerage website.
Any suggestions? Is this possible, advisable, best use of quality content?
Alternatively, where else can we post engaging content to create links back to our site? Social media? The nature of the content would be such topics as how to find the best value in Manhattan office of loft space rentals, etcera.

Interesting that you mention video. Do you think, that if well done that attracts interest that is equal or better than an article? Also, as a B+B service, do you think that Snapchat would be appropriate for posting? Are links that originate in Facebook and Snapchat "follow" links? I know that YouTube is no follow. As a B+B business (commercial real estate) I am hoping to find the best sites for posting information. Recently we have been creating promotional videos of listings and informational videos of neighborhoods and are trying to figure out where to post them. From what you are saying it is key to post these videos on our website. Our few experiments have been on YouTube.

The best course of action is going to vary. Generally I'd say promote your content everywhere you can until you find what works. Maybe the content you're producing is best on Instagram, or maybe it gains more traction on Pinterest. Maybe your tweets have more engagement than your Facebook posts. Should videos go on Snapchat or YouTube?
It's really difficult to say what you should be doing without any knowledge of your products, services, content, brand voice, etc. If you're considering paid promotions then Facebook is probably your best platform for its ability to target very specific segments. And it just has massive reach. But otherwise, try to match up your content with the right platform through discovery.
Once you've got that nailed down, definitely give the content a home on your website. This gives people something to link back to.
You can get pretty creative with how you target people for link building campaigns, so you don't need to take this strategy as link gospel, but it's one option for you that I think is a bit more ethical and probably more effective in the long run than paying bloggers individually to link to you.

So let's say I have a useful article about renting office space in Manhattan. Would I be best posting it on a social media site with a link back to our site? Or better to add the article to our blog and then promote it on social media like Twitter and Googe+ and then like back to the article?

To quote John Mueller, "The goal should not be to have a natural looking link profile, the goal should be to have a natural link profile".
Purchasing links would be inadvisable and against webmaster guidelines. Some of the best link building strategies I've seen have revolved around creating really great content and sharing and promoting it through social networks. Passive link building through content marketing is honestly the best way to create positive link equity without running afoul of Penguin.

The 40% seem to be relevant directories, forums, blog comments, etc. They said they build other link types because it diversifies the link building and profile rather then just building high quality guest posts. ECommcerce internal linking structure best practice
Hi, Can anyone advise on the best internal linking practice for an eCommerce website? Should the introduction copy on each category page contain naturally placed links down to sub categories and products and should each sub category link back up to the main category page. Is there a 'best practice' method of linking categories, sub categories and products? In terms of internal linking product pages, I presume the best practice would be to link other relevant products to each each? Thanks

Best Practices
Okay this would be a piece of cake for most of you out there.. What are the best practices once you add a page or piece of content on your website with a new keyword that you have never used before but plan to use it with every relevant new page you add. How do you ensure that Google will crawl that page? Secondly, if you add the new keyword in the old pieces of content/ pages you have already published by editing the content to suit that keyword, how would you ensure that it gets crawled my Google. Can you recover from "Unnatural links to your site—impacts links" if you remove them or have they already been discounted?
If Google has already discounted the value of the links and my rankings dropped because in the past these links passed value and now they don't. Is there any reason to remove them? If I do remove them, is there a chance of "recovery" or should I just move forward with my 8 month old blogging/content marketing campaign.

PDF for link building - avoiding duplicate content
Hello, We've got an article that we're turning into a PDF. Both the article and the PDF will be on our site. This PDF is a good, thorough piece of content on how to choose a product. We're going to strip out all of the links to our in the article and create this PDF so that it will be good for people to reference and even print. Then we're going to do link building through outreach since people will find the article and PDF useful. My question is, how do I use rel="canonical" to make sure that the article and PDF aren't duplicate content? Thanks.

Local SEO Best Practices
Hello Everyone, I'm new to SEOmoz, I'm looking to use this as a tool to really help me, and evenually I can help others. I am an Web Developer with some online marketing experience. I did Local SEO a Few Years ago, and things have really changed since then. I know this Panda and Penguin update really is putting a hurting on the directory submission. Google no longer has 'Citations" on their places page, and many other changes. With that being said, what are some best practices for Local SEO? I am a propeller head by nature, but am also very creative when I need to be. I have potental sites to market, anywhere from Holistic Medical Doctors, Plastic Surgeons Community Blogs, and Auto Repair Shops, Law firms (to give you some perspectic) I also read Danny Dover's Book, to learn some more about SEO, the one thing that is unclear is how to acquire quality links I would really appreciate any perspective on this, every little thing helps Zach Russell

My site links have gone from a mega site links to several small links under my SERP results in Google. Any ideas why?
A site I have currently had the mega site links on the SERP results. Recently they have updated the mega links to the smaller 4 inline links under my SERP result. Any idea what happened or how do I correct this?
