Should I disavow links from Dead Domains?
-
Have a new client who hired a fly-by-night backlinking company. They made 500 links from directories and 160 of these are on domains that have been deleted.
So should I inlcude the 160 dead links in my disavow?
-
I'd still disavow these because you never know when those dead domains may come back online again. There is no disadvantage to disavowing spammy directories that no longer exist other than the time it takes to do so.
With that said, however, it's not likely to make a significant difference to your rankings whether you leave these or disavow them. In the past, these spammy domains had the possibility of causing your site to be suppressed by the Penguin algorithm. But when Google released Penguin 4.0 in September of 2016, Penguin no longer demotes. It simply stops counting any link metrics from spammy links.
So why disavow? There are a few reasons:
- If you ever get a manual review of the website by the webspam team and you haven't disavowed you're at risk for getting an unnatural links penalty. You do NOT want that.
-There are other algorithms outside of Penguin that look at links. We don't know much about them, but best to be safe rather than sorry.
-Even though Google says they are simply not counting spammy links, I wouldn't want to trust their word completely and simply ignore spammy links.
-
Well, here is a thing about disavowing - it takes quite a bit of time for google to recrawl everything and apply for rankings. The sudden change in gain and drop off was what hurt you guys. I really doubt disavow would help. You can do it - no difference to you, just time spent

Thanks Dmitri,
Quick follow up it was 40% of the domains backlinks that appeared on these now dead domains. And all the domains were deleted in the last 60 days so Google saw a huge number of our backlinks disappear overnight. We also dropped over that period and think this might be a contributor.
So I guess that's the second side of it - if we disavow Google will no longer consider the 40% of links from dead domains. Will disavowing boost in this case?
-
Howdy.
The only reason I would suggest disavowing is when the links are coming from spammy domains. So, if those dead domains were spammy - then sure. Otherwise it'll drop off on it's own without any harm.
Hope this helps.

Value of Links? What is each link worth?
Morning Everyone, I just had this thought and wondered what everyone's opinions were in terms of link value in monetary terms. We'll assume for the purposes of this that the links come from contextually relevant sites and that the sites in question have got the Moz DA from being high quality and have a good quality incoming link profile. Its a bit of a theoretical question, but i guess imagine if the only way you could get links was to pay for them, what would they be worth to you. This is link value for SEO purposes, they will have in addition value from traffic from good sites, that no doubt varies wildly depending on topic. I assume everyone also agrees on: The first link from a domain is the most valuable High DA sites are worth more than low ones. So could anyone who has an opinion on the link value suggest a monetary value for links. Its really just using a monetary amount to see how best to target my time. Here is my example of what might be expected, but I am hoping people with more knowledge will perhaps correct it. DA Rating First Link 2nd-5th Link 5th-10th Link 10Plus Links 5 $5 $2 $1 $0 15 $7 $3 $2 $1 25 $25 $10 $5 $2 35 $45 $20 $7 $3 45 $65 $30 $11 $4 55 $95 $45 $19 $5 65 $200 $100 $45 $6 75 $350 $120 $65 $9 85 $700 $240 $95 $15 95 $1100 $450 $200 $30

Should I disavow spammy links that are showing in Open Site Explorer but not showing in Google Webmaster Tools?
Howdy Mozzers, After carrying out a backlink audit for a client, Open Site Explorer shows a range of outrageously spammy links for guys wanting a bit of assistance in the bedroom area, and so on. Hopping over to Google Webmaster Tools, there is no reported trace of said spammy links (for either of the www/non-www versions of the site). There are also no manual webspam actions found on the www/non-www Google Webmaster Tools accounts for this website. So my question is: do I carry out a pre-emptive strike and go down the disavow process of requesting removal from the spammy sites, and then submit a disavow request to Google after allowing a suitable period of time for the junky/compromised website to (not) respond? Or do I just leave it alone? Thanks in advance for your wise words of wisdom and pearls of clarity.

Link Building
I've been hearing about going after niche directories, and my question is most of them have a ton of links on any given page. Is it even worth taking the time to approach these sites knowing they won't pass a lot of link juice?

Is there a way to optimize our other domains for our primary domain?
Hi guys, At the moment we have our main website that is at .com We have also bought all the other domains that are available, such as: org.uk, .jp, .it, .mobi, co.nz, co.za, com.au, .cn and .eu Is there a way we can make these domains work for us a bit more? Currently they all just redirect to .com. Would it be better to put a holding page with a link to us and then a redirect on?

Link Churn - where have all my links gone?
I am sure most of you have asked yourself the question I'm asking right now.. Where have all my links gone? I am starting to get twitchy now. I would estimate we have lost around 60% of our links in the past 3 weeks. Does anyone have any comeback stories? Feel like I am back to the start again. I have made a number of changes on the site not least removing a reciprical link page.. that had over 200 links on it but from reading one of Rand's tweets is it true that linking out could be good again?
