301 redirects for all urls - legal dispute
-
The website in question is a very high traffic website with substantial credibility in it's subject matter (sorry, can't share more details) that delivers an overwhelming majority of traffic from SEO, much of which is new visitors.
A legal dispute has resulted in both parties agreeing to forward a percentage of the total URLs to alternative websites (only 1 website for each party). All URLs for the domain will be forwarded elsewhere.
It does not make sense to me that the "sum of the parts" will be as strong once the redirects are implemented but I am looking for feedback.
It is fair to say that the alternative domains of each party are no where near as strong as the domain being "parted out."
Will the SEO juice be distributed to each domain in full? Will both parties lose out substantially?
Feel free to ask for clarifications and I'll do the best I can given the legal parameters.
Thanks.

The legal wrangling aside (as this isn't something to concern ourselves with from a technical standpoint) I'd say this boils down to: If I redirect all of the established equity for one site well-established, authority site between two newly-established domains, will the new sites do as well, pro rata, as the original site?
Short answer, no.
The purpose of a 301 is to tell Search engines that the original content has been moved elsewhere. on a permanent basis. Between 2013 and early 2016, it was the case that approx 15% of PageRank was lost when using a 301. However, that is (thankfully) no longer the case *BUT **just because Google no longer imposes a penalty for 301 redirects, PageRank is only of hundreds of signals that Google uses when ranking web pages.
In a perfect world, if you create a 301 redirect from one page to another where the content remains exactly the same AND only the URL changes, then you should see no fall off in traffic.
See: https://moz.com/blog/301-redirection-rules-for-seo
Even if we assume that you have evenly (and successfully) divided 100% of the links between the two sites, with each page redirect passing over 100% of the link equity (and, in this hypothetical world, each page is carrying the same level of authority), you're still dividing the overall domain authority between two sites, so, even if everything goes perfectly when you create all of the redirects, you still end up with two sites which are weaker than the original.
In reality, of course, you are unlikely to manage to pass on every drop of 'link juice' from each of the original pages, and not all pages will carry the same weight as the others (you could compare page authority in Moz and divide by overall "value" rather than number of pages but that's never going to be precise - or easy). And this is before all of the other ranking signals come into play.
I'd suggest the best you can do here is to carefully plan and execute the separation but both parties are going to lose out here - it's now a matter of trying to lose least.
(*I like big buts and I cannot lie.)

Is anyone able to check this 301 redirect for errors please?
Hi, I had a developer write a 301 wildcard for redirecting old hosted site to a new domain. Old URLS looked like /b/2039566/1/akai.html

With varying letters & numbers. I have 26,000 crawl errors in GWT and I can only imagine it's because this is looping?
Can anyone advise if this would be causing grief? Thanks

To 301 redirect or not to 301 redirect? duplicate content problem www.domain.com and www.domain.com/en/
Hello, If your website is getting flagged for duplicate content from your main domain www.domain.com and your multilingual english domain www.domain.com/en/ is it wise to 301 redirect the english multilingual website to the main site? Please advise. We've recently installed the joomish component to one of our joomla websites in an effort to streamline a spanish translation of the website. The translation was a success and the new spanish webpages were indexed but unfortunately one of the web developers enabled the english part of the component and some english webpages were also indexed under the multilingual english domain www.domain.com/en/ and that flagged us for duplicate content. I added a 301 redirect to redirect all visitors from the www.domain/en/ webpages to the main www.domain.com/ webpages. But is that the proper way of handling this problem? Please advise.

301 on certain url string
I have a few thousand old urls with the string /content/ in them and are looking for a way to 301 batch redirect them. So for all the urls that contain the word 'content' I would like to redirect to 1 specific page. I have tried the methods below without success. Regular 301's are working fine but this particular method is not working for me. I am running a Joomla site but I don't imagine that would have any impact. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Redirect 301 ^content/.*$ http://www.mysite.com Redirect 301 ^content/ http://www.mysite.com

Where does Wordpress store the 301 redirects?
Hi, I've just created a campaign for my new wordpress blog and found 11 301 redirects which I was not aware of. It looks like wordpress has created them automatically. Does any one know how wordpress handles this issues or where are they stored so I can delete them? They are of no use for me. 9 of these redirects point to the same url with an added '/' and are in pages 1 is on a post. I've been changing the permalink and some urls several times and maybe one of these times the Wordpress has automatically created the 301 redirect. But why? I do not want to keep the old url. the last redirect is very strange it goes from http://www.mydomain.com/folder to http://www.mydomain.com where folder is the folder where I installed wordpress. But again, I want no one to type the url with the folder name or even know this folder exists. Any comment on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot, David

Loss of search engine positions after 301 redirect - what went wrong?!?
Hi Guys After adhering to the On Page optimisation suggestions given by SEOmoz, we redirected some of old urls to new ones. We set 301 redirects from the old pages to new on a page by page basis but our search engine ranking subsequently fell off the radar and lost PR. We confirmed redirection with fiddler and it shows 301 permanent redirect on every page as expected. To manage redirection using a common code logic we executed following: In Http module, using “rewrite path” we route “all old page requests” to a page called “redirect.aspx? oldpagename =[oldpagename]”. This happens at server side. In redirect.aspx we are redirecting from old page to new page using 301 permanent redirect. In the browser, when old page is requested, it will 301 redirect to new page. In hope we and others can learn from our mistakes - what did we do wrong ?!? Thanks in advance. Dave - www.paysubsonline.com

301 Redirect Question
I'm working on a site that has a lot of indexed pages and backlinks to both domain.com and www.domain.com. Will using a 301 redirect to send domain.com to www.domain.com merge all of the indexed pages and links over to www.domain.com, thereby strengthening the www?

301 an old URL with a ? in the URL?
I am redoing a site and the URL's are changing structure. The client's site was in magento and in the store they would get two URLs, for example: /store/categoryname/productname and /store/categoryname/productname?SID=dslkajsfdoiu947598whouieht983hg98 Do I have to 301 redirect both of these URL's to their new counterpart? Both go to the same content but magento seemed to add these SIDs into the navigation and Google has both versions in the index.

301 Redirect NOT Working as Expected - HELP!
Hi! I just launched our newly coded site and just realized the installed 301 is NOT working. The URL string is the same EXCEPT for the removal of /shop/. Here is the code in .htaccess: ############################################ enable rewrites Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on #RedirectMatch 301 ^/shop?/$ http://hiphound.com/ RedirectMatch 301 ^/shop?/$ http://hiphound.com ########################################### When I go to Google and click on an old link I get a 404. No bueno!! Here is an example: http://hiphound.com/shop/rubit-dog-tag-clip I thought (and was told) that the installed 301 would send this page to: http://hiphound.com/rubit-dog-tag-clip It's not. Please HELP!! 🙂 What am I doing wrong??? Lynn
